Its been painfully slow the past....well...ever. When im tethered up, here is my results. What are you guys getting? BTW im rooted and using aNetshare.

Is there any way to get a speed test without tethering? I don't really fancy going through the tethering ritual to see how slow my 3G is.

I am not rooted or tethered, I am running XtremeLabs Speedtest ... This is 3G connection .... I dont have Wifi available for testing ..

That Xtremelabs speedtest is really, really buggy. I still havent found an app that can test my 3g speeds correctly. I do think there is a problem with tethering and the slow speeds, but good thing i dont use tethering at all. I was just trying to see what others were getting.

How do you know what is the correct speed ?
I know it varies depending on several factors .... and that TMO would have a MAX advertised/publish speed to expect ...
I have not found XtremeLabs to lockup or such and so have trusted that it providing a reasonable snapshot at the point in time ...
An would ping be another way of measurement ?
Also possibly using a web-based SpeedTest ... ?

With iNetwork i only get a download speed ... the apps does dl first then says "sending results please wait" ... I see the GPS icon appear in the status bar eventually it does away as does the "pleasewait" and then Nothing ! ...
??? I dont why it would use GPS... but I even tried outside ... no difference ..

Xtremelabs clocks my wifi at 4megs when im capable of 10megs. Even at my parents home 1.5/768 dsl, it clocks me in much lower than that. So who knows what the real speed is. I tethered my phone to my laptop and ran a test from my browser.

Basically I think such kind of speed depends on the plan which you have selected. If you have selected minimum than there will be less speed ... its quite obvious.

In the US with T-Mobile there is 3G ...and there is NO plan selection for 3G speed ... you get what you get at the moment in time and depending on what server you are connect with and/or through at that particular point in time .... the speeds varies from moment to moment even at the sane server ...depending on network load ...

So yea,pretty much a year after the first post of this my speeds have not increased. Ive done test from my home up to 50 miles down south and still the same results. Ive tested it with the following devices....G1,myTouch,ION,Nexus One,Blackberry and Touch Pro 2. So i know its not the device but the network. Perhaps its time to call out T mobile on this one? Sorry to resurrect an old thread but i figured why waste space in creating a new one.
That sux. You may be taking a performance hit when tthring, depending on device/software. I noticed decreased speeds while tethering on AT&T using my Cradlepoint router, or just direct connect to PC.
As far as T-Mobile, I take a hit tethering my PC with Nokia software suite, but as far as the phone itself, speedtests are good for at least:

It may be where you live more than just TMo in general.
I know where I live the speed is faster than DSL.
Download is at 3,839 Kbps at 5MB data test.
and 5,479 Kbps at 1MB data...

just ran the speedtest and got the below, i'm in 3-4 bars 3G area, and tethered to a laptop

I typically see around 1mbps down and 800 kbps on the upstream.. However I was in Redlands and Huntington Beach and saw 5.3Mbps down and 1.4Mbps up. I was really impressed. My friends with verizon and att could surpass 1.5mbps down and couldnt break 500kbps up. I am always faster on t-mobile than i was on verizon

The best speed I've ever been able to get is ~.75Mbps Down and ~ .45Mbps Up. This is in Cincinnati.
Our 3G/H speeds are terrible here. Even sitting 50 yards from an H tower I get these speeds.
I average ~.40-.50Mbps down and ~.20-.30Mbps up in "normal" use in and around the city.
T-mobile REALLY REALLY needs to upgrade their backhaul quick! Whats the point of my connecting to H enabled towers when the backhaul can't even handle a 1Mbps connection?
Edit: This isn't just on my N1. My buddy with a G1 has these issues, my brother with a Mytouch has these issues and my wife also has an N1 with these issues.

My Blackberry Bold 9700 would get a speed like 300 kbps max. I downloaded the speedtest.net app for my mytouch 3g slide and netted some pretty nice results. I'm very impressed. 4.06 Mbps down and 1.44 Mbps up. It shows my network as HSDPA so I'm not even using HSPA+. I can only imagine how much faster it will be once that goes live in Houston.
