Help Wrong Time?

I noticed something really strange going on with my phone last night. Its clock was about 20 minutes off. It was keeping accurate track of the minutes going by (I was using it to time something I was grilling) but it thought it was 8:25 when it was 8:45.
I turned it off and then restarted it, and then it fixed itself. But how and why did that happen? I thought that it kept track of time through the sattelites or something. And I was running the Sky Map app, looking at the stars, so it's not as if it was out of contact with things for a long time.
The only unusual thing that happened to my phone yesterday is that overnight it ran out of power. I forgot to plug it into the charger and had been doing a lot of texting. It's only the second time that I've ever let it run out of battery like that and had to plug it in and restart it. Could that have been what upset it?
This incedent makes me nervous cause I often rely on it to tell time.

I had the same issue with my phone a while back. I think that its because of a strange glitch with Android devices. If you look at the time now and wait 10 mins then quickly turn on the screen and turn it off it sometimes will get confused and display that time instead. Its also happened with my tablet. Letting a phone die though shouldn't have anything to do with it , in fact a good bunch of ppl actually think it helps the battery life.

Actually, you shouldn't let any device with a Li-Ion battery ever die, it can drastically shorten the battery life.

As for the time being wrong, it is most likely your phone had a weak signal from your carrier. One solution I have seen is putting the phone into airplane mode for a few seconds then turning it back to normal. It will force your phone to locate the strongest signal and connect back to your carrier, thus updating system time.

Let me know if you are still having the issue after trying this and I will ask around for other possible solutions.

Ever since I powered it down and then restarted it it's been fine. But I'll definitely remember the airplane mode thing. That would be easier than restarting it.
Does my phone have a Li-Ion battery? I didn't mean for it to run out of power, it was an accident. I normally plug it in every night and sometimes during the day if I've worked it hard.

Yeah, all modern electronic devices with a rechargeable battery are Li-Ion. I was not directing that at you; just correcting what the other poster said about letting it die, and it being good for the battery.
