My friend's phone is stuck on what appears to be some kind of download screen. I think it might be a virus. He has been visiting rather unsavory sites. I cannot shut the phone off or do much of anything with it except take a picture or two with my own substandard Moto G Stylus camera. By the way, it's a relatively new Samsung from Cricket. He's had it maybe a few months

So the instructions for cancelling the download (volume key + side key for > 7 seconds) don't work?

This looks like the "download mode" that you'd use if you were updating the system via USB from a computer (what would be "fastboot mode" on any other Android, but Samsung like to change things). Assuming he's not been messing with ADB, he could still get into download mode by pressing some combination of keys - should be hard to do accidentally, though if one of the keys is stuck "on" it becomes more likely (and might be a reason why the cancel key combination doesn't work). Maybe ask whether he's had any problem with volume keys, because if he has that might be the explanation.

He's zero tech. If he accidentally pressed some bizarre combination of keys, he probably wouldn't know it. I was thinking virus because of the nasty junk he's been getting into with that phone. The good news is that it came back on and seems to be "normal" (for a Samsung anyway). When he tried to make phone calls this morning he was getting only Cricket, the carrier, but now it's working all right, I guess.
