The earphones that came with my Xperia X10 have a small silver button. When the headphones are plugged into my phone pressing it does nothing - the earphones sound fine but no change when the button is pressed. My wife has a Sony MP3 player which is a couple of years old, sorry it don't know the model - however I was loading some songs on it for her and I grabbed the headphones from my X10 and plugged them in. The sound from the MP3 player through the headphones was washed out and flat until I pushed the silver button at which point the sound filled out and sounded great. The only problem is that to keep the good sound you had to keep the silver button pressed in,, not very practical. So my question is,, what gives with the button on the headphones that came with my phone?? Thanks.

I think its supposed to be a mute, but not 100% sure. At least SE finally used a regular headphone jack so other headphones can be used.
Mate i think a regular earphone will have a two ring band on the shaft end, whereas the special three band are for phones which we can use a mute and/or controlling loudness. So a three band earphone will not work fine on regular mp3 players but you can tweak use it by inserting only the first two bands-till you hear it clear, but the trick is how you manage to keep it in place, is also a big problem. I took the earphone three band supplied from my galaxy s and used it for X10 and it was sounding great....
Hey guys, I got an xperia pro with earphone as well. I do like to use my mp3 player since it will not drain the phone's battery. Using Sony Ericsson earphone seems to have this problem. Previously, I have the Nokia and also the htc earphone and doesn't seems to have this issue. Both are 3 band 3.5 mm adapter. I suspect like by default, the Sony Ericsson earphone short the third band.
For workaround, I plug the Sony Ericsson adapter 2/3 in, and the mp3 vocal is not soften/mute when using my mp3. But kinda irritating as the plug falls off easily. The other workaround is to always hold the push to answer button. Which I think may cause the button to wear off super fast.

Or just use regular headphones in your MP3 player. And regular headphones work in the xPeria...as long as they aren't iPod style headphones. Headphones that don't have a mic work great in the xPeria.
Those may not the device I want. as xperia already included the earphone in the package, I wanna bring that out as it has Mic function. This is so that I can interchange between my xperia and mp3 player. Earphone wires management is tedious, that's why I juz wanna bring one earphone on the go. And also to save costs. An adapter shld be a few bucks, right? This second link seems similar, but I want the reverse, to plug in the xperia earphone to the mp3 player. in this case the adapter female shld be 3 band and male shld be 2 band.
anyways, thanx for the suggestions though. Hopefully, there is one such adapter in the market.
