Why don't you just try setting up the email app to use your Hotmail?

I use it to get my Yahoo emails so guess it might work with hotmail too.

I've looked at this a bit more and I'm not sure if the free hotmail provides POP3 access, so you might not be able to use this app.

*** Edit 2 ***
If you search for Hotmail in the Market there are some apps which use the Hotmail Mobile website, so this may be your only option.

You can get the free Hotmail (there's a paid one?) POP account to work with the Email app. All I had to do was select it as a POP account, enter my info, and then the app did the rest and it works just fine for me.

I don't have mine set to sync but yes, you can set up Hotmail with the default account, I have. And if i had email notifications on and syncing, id' get notifications for new email .
