Help x10a Signal Problems

I'm having signal problems with my new x10a phone. Well, it isn't exactly new. I got it from my girlfriend after she got a new phone a week or so ago. lol Anyway, the problem with the phone is that it has a very weak signal and often will drop calls. I know it has to be the phone because it does it in places where I know that it should be getting nearly full bars. Even if I should happen to find a place that gives me more than one or two bars initially, it will still lose signal rather quickly most of the time and drop a call, but then I can take the simcard out and put it into an older phone in the same spot and get a full signal It used to do the same thing back when my girlfriend still used it as well.
I read on one thread here that if you go into Network Mode on the phone and change the setting to GSM only then it might boost the signal, but when I tried doing that on the phone, I found that the Network Mode option on the phone was grayed out and unaccessible. Would I need to root the phone to gain access to that particular function?
I apologize if these questions are rather redundant, but I am a complete noob to the whole thing and would greatly appreciate any assistance in this matter.

I also have a similar problem
Signal is often weak and disappears completely
while for a few moments to be very good
often this is happening indoors
