Help X8: Great overall, but three problems..

Jarlath

Newbie
I've been able to get rid of my pc, iPod, memory stick and old phone thanks to this device. I'm VERY happy!

If anyone can help me get a clue about these three problems, that would be great.

1) Laggy interface. Since the update to android 2.1, there is a lag occasionally between my touch and the response of the device.

2) I uninstalled an application (iRecord and GoWeather actually) and they left a lot of junk behind that I need root privileges to remove. Fair enough, the app developer should be on top of that, but I think the android os should be more watchful of what a guest brings to the device and make sure they take everything with them on the way out.

3) Default apps. I understand I cannot delete them without rooting the phone (I'm not going to take that risk. I choose the simple life these days.) But can the icons even be removed from the application panes? Or is it possible for me to access the device from my linux desktop and achieve root access that way? Like with a live CD?

Thanks for listening!

The only bit I can add a comment to is No 3. I use ADW.Launcher free from the market and this also allows you to customise your app drawer, you basically create the list of apps you want to see rather than having to scroll through them all.

Trust me rooting will solve all of the above problems and its really safe...

rosered, thank you for that. I've since tried it out and it's really nice. It gave me a few ideas for tidying up my default display, which I've gone back to. I've just put the important icons on the first two panes and all the junk on the other ones.

As for rooting suhel28, I've heard that I won't get system updates from Sony any more and that I'll have to effectively become my own administrator. And some people have managed to brick their phones - I don't want that this time round. My days of linux hacking are over :) And if Blitzkreig still can't get the Penguin game and other stuff off after rooting then my primary reason for doing it is gone.

I've also noticed that wireless seems to drop out frequently now since the update to 2.1. But with others reporting the same thing, as a google search showed, I'll bet they'll have that improved in a few weeks.

This is a REALLY good phone for EUR 130. If the camera wasn't so poor I'd recommend it to people, but most of my friends use the camera as much as the phone :D

Thanks for your replies, I'm happy with my setup now

Its not that easy to Brick your phone;) Thats what i heard and thats why i rooted my device even though i haven't done something like this before. you can always update or repair your phone through SEUS or PC companion or even using Bi4ary flasher(MUCH FASTER). u can delete all the stock apps from ur phone. i have removed everything except those important apps.

What you hear is not always true...

I updated to 2.1 with a rooTed 6.1

.. its not rocket science that you're so afraid of...

As you wish anyways

Damn,I wrote a super big post and my Google Chrome froze and lost it... :-@

Anyway,Jarlath you should know that even with 57 apps installed and no
bloatware removed,I still have 160MB internal memory free,so there you go...
Also xRecovery (Back and restore done with a single click before booting)
and an extra 100 points in Quadrant benchmark with JIT makes rooting a must!
Apart form all these, even if we get a 2.2 update, which I doubt it,
a rooted phone can be updated as normal. It doesnt matter.
N.

That's simple to answer. Do you need more memory for apps? Do you want to change themes? Maybe later do you want android 2.2? Then ROOT!
