Xiaomi devices not officially available in NZ? You probably get clobbered for import tax and duty if you try buying from elsewhere, grey import. Probably no legal way around that.
Have you looked at Huawei Honor series phones, they are rather similar to Xiaomi, and I presume are available in NZ.
