Xperia settings not recognised on PC

I have a brand new Xperia phone, and have tried connecting it to my PC using the USB cable, but the phone settings aren't recognised on my PC.
Any ideas?

Is the PC connected to the internet? If not you need the PC Companion installer for the drivers./
