Has anyone ever been told this? I've now heard this twice in a month. I'm not sure what it means exactly or if it's a bad thing.

You take work too personally

Yes and yes. I work ALL the time even though it's not necessarily required. My company asks me to put in 8 hours a day and if there's not time to get everything done, then there's not time. I put in 10-12 hours a day and sometimes more because I want to make sure everything is done whether there's enough time or not.

With all due respect, if this describes you how on earth does someone telling you that you take work too seriously not make sense to you?

They said I take it too personally, not too seriously. Too seriously would make sense. I'm not sure what too personally means.

I have a co-worker/friend who talks about work most of the time, even when out trying to have fun. He works even when he's off and didn't get called or paged. He reads server documentation in his spare time, he goes to meetings that he isn't even involved in, he gets angry about things that go wrong even when they are outside of his department, basically he acts as if he owns the place.
If any of that is you, that's what it means.

You are unwilling to leave when your time is up because you want to make sure the job is done (while others just leave, or at least that is what I got from your statement). To me that reads that it is more personal to you than to the average worker, no?

what they probably mean is you are to emotionally involved in your work. This isn't including things like being passionate or proactive about your job, just things like you let what people say get you anxious or upset or you put too much pressure on yourself to get things done on deadlines and to a certain standard, possibly to the point that it's crossing over into your personal life and is plaguing your mind outside of work.
If you feel happy doing the extra work and it's not really effecting you then just ignore what people say, however if you feel you need to put in extra time just because you have to get things done and it's chipping away at your leisure time then have a talk with your manager to discuss other options. If you are doing more hours to get work done and you haven't made the company aware of it, they will just keep giving you the same workload because you seem to be handling it, don't be afraid to speak up. The company needs to change things to suit your standard hours, you shouldn't change your hours to meet the deadlines.

Yeah, that's is probably accurate. I guess I've just never thought of it that way before.
I take work way too personally AND seriously.
I work in the Automotive world. Everything I touch has the potential to cause an auto accident. In my area we build and install the rear suspension of a very popular 4 door sedan. If the crew and I, do not do our jobs to specs, something bad could happen. Anything from a recall to a parts failure of some sort. Leading to injury or death. I am the back up for our Lead Tech. So we have a lot on our shoulders, and we do dern good not killing ourselves up there. (Mentally)
We get paid well, we are not union, have great benefits. We just have some... ok a LOT of folks with bad attitudes, and general laziness. Some of us EARN our money, most of them feel like they deserve it. It makes it hard to care when no ones else does. I was raised, if you want it done, do it yourself, cuz no one else will. When I put my hands on a unit I will build it to the best of my ability. Others see it as just a job, and do when they can to get by. Heck our manager just sees it as getting paid for "social time". And that really ticks us off.
I don't drink... but if I wanna retire here... I may START!
