Your #1 Tip for New Users

if you've come from a Windows Mobile environment forget all you have learnt about syncing. In particular HTC Sync the ActiveSync (Microsoft) equivalent will NOT work on more than one PC - try it and you'll end up with duplicates.
What worked for me in terms of syncing home and work PCs was this:
Calendars: Run Google Sync tool on both home and work PC. Android then syncs to Goog

Contacts: Work PC contacts are accessed via Exchange account set up on Android. Home PC contacts are sync'd via HTC Sync application (Calendar sync is disabled in settings).
Update: Delete the bit in red. HTC Sync ended up corrupting my contacts and am now using MyPhoneExplorer instead.
 
Someone already posted that pressing the Home button allows you to switch to another app, switching the app you were just running into the background. But I found something else which I hadn't seen in the manual.

Press and hold the Home button and you can choose from a list of 8 recent apps. The fastest way to switch back and forth between two different apps that I know. If you change your mind you can just press Home again rather than reaching for the Back button.
 
APP MATE!!! This is especially for those of u who cant stand the menu bein so disorganised and annoyingly messy! U can access so many more apps from homescreen using the folders it creates! its DEFINATELY a must have!! =D
 
READ THE STICKIES..... in all seriousness new members need to read these more as a lot o the questions they ask have already been answered many times, or as has already been mentioned, use the search.
 
Find the RUU for your phone to go back to stock if things go wrong - single most important thing everyone should do

Ok, those are 5 app and widget recommendations, but they are still necessary. :)
 
Get widgetsoid. It has the most customisation of any widgets program I've used and its free. You can put a switch for any setting (3g, wi-fi, autolock, autorotate), shortcuts to apps and even battery/ram/rom capacities. You can make the widgets any shape from 5*1 to 1*5. There is also the option to have more switches than homscreen spaces. For example, a launcher with a 4*4 screen could still fit 6 switches on one row.

If I had known about this widget I would have saved hours and hours of exploring the settings menu and hours of battery life.

Did I mention it is free?

I agree, I love widgetsoid. I've used it for a long time. Though I don't any longer, because gingerbread's power bar takes it place. But it was very nice to have before then.
 
Hmm. Several suggestions for me:

K-9 Mail For handling all your inboxes in one decent app which supports push e-mail
uTorrent for handling your torrents remotely
Comic Strips for quick casual browsing
Google shopper, Amazon & Ebay for purchasing goods on the go!


These are probably my key apps. :D

Also, I'd bite the bullet and root. I held back 12 months and limited myself to the potential as I suffered from low memory problems. Should have done it MUCH sooner! :rolleyes:
 
#1 tip?

Be aware that while your shiny new Desire is a *very* cool phone, it has strictly limited internal storage space.

This means you either need to:

a) Not go completely mad installing apps (especially if they're sizeable)

b) Root

I went down the route of option a. If I feck up the phone, I'm screwed!
