Help YouTube Not Compatible With GS2

unplugged1

Android Enthusiast
Here's a new one: I noted a while back that when I tried to upgrade my YouTube on the GS2 Epic 4G Touch, it told me that it wasn't compatible with my phone.

I noted on Phandroid that there had been a significant update to YouTube, so I simply deleted it from my phone and tried to re-install YouTube. It will not show up in my Android Market, and when I go online, this is what it tells me:

Galaxy S II
This item is not compatible with your device.

Anyone out there having the same issue? Or any suggestions on how to get YouTube back on my phone?

Updated: The current version of YouTube offered on the Marketplace is 2.3.4. Check your version and confirm that it is close to this version. If not, then maybe our YouTube is not updating and it is stuck on an older version.

Update: I was able to re-install the YouTube App from AppBrain. However, the version is still 2.1.6. When I try to upgrade to the current 2.3.4, the Market tells me: "Your device is not compatible with this item."

Is everyone else able to update their YouTube to the current version?

i tried searching for youtube on market and i couldn't find it but the youtube app that came with my phone works fine

Yes, your YouTube works fine, but the point is that you will not benefit from any of the recent upgrades to YouTube. For instance, the article yesterday on Phandroid points out that,

"YouTube has just gotten a pretty significant upgrade in the Android market. It’s version 2.3.4 and adds a lot of things users have been asking for. You can now see annotations on videos, a huge deal for YouTubers who tend to use annotations to do things like link to other videos, make corrections and more."

Here: YouTube Update Adds Annotations, +1 Button, “Watch Later” Queue and More

What this means is that GS2 owners are apparently stuck with an old version of YouTube while the rest of Android users and iPhone users get regular updates.

NOTE:

I have confirmed with Samsung that the GS2 Epic 4G Touch will NOT update YouTube.

Samsung is aware of the issue, but has no information on why there is this problem, when this issue will be corrected, or even if the issue is currently being addressed.

I noted to the customer service rep that it appears rather bizarre that the rest of the Android community is able to update YouTube with ease. He had no answer as to why the GS2 is specifically having this issue.

Perhaps a little pressure by Phandroid and other Android sites will move Samsung to do something about GS2 users forever being stuck with YouTube version 2.1.6.

UPDATE: Here is an article and a link to the apk for direct install. For now, this may be the only option until Samsung fixes the issue.

I did install the apk, and my YouTube version now shows as 2.3.4. This is the workaround for now.

If I read article correctly, it looks like this is a problem with the YouTube app and is happening on many devices (not just E4GT). It appears that the app itself is only valid for limited Android versions:"REQUIRES ANDROID: 2.2 - 2.3.3". The E4GT runs version 2.3.4.

But, as I mentioned above, the current YouTube apk that I downloaded works just fine on my E4GT. Even Samsung has no idea why the YouTube app on the E4GT is not updating.

The great masses of E4GT owners who do not look at this thread or view the Android Police article, will be stuck with YouTube version 2.1.6 until Samsung and Google get on the same page. Maybe they won't notice the difference....

Right, I understand that. My point was that it actually seems pretty clear why it won't update ... there's a version mismatch between what the YouTube app says it supports and the E4GT (and many others no doubt). I suspect the App Market won't show you apps or try to upgrade if your version doesn't match the app's supported version(s). So, it would seem it's just a matter of YouTube (Google) updating the app to officially support 2.3.4 ... I don't think it has anything specifically to do with the E4GT or Samsung (except they could perhaps convince Google to update the app).
