Help Zeki TBQG774B - How to make it useful

First, I am just learning about the Android world. I got this 7" Zeki tablet as a gift, and I thought it would be a nice portable tool to use. But it has become a pain.

I bought the max size of card for storage, 32gb, and popped it in. The system says there is just 3.91 gb on the card. So that's become a problem. Next, every time I turn it on it starts to update. It has updated so much that now it hardly allows any room to store anything. I tried to delete a bunch of Google garbage apps, but all they do is come back, like a bad habit. I did some research and found that to clean up problems you have get a program to "root" the device. So, I downloaded KingRoot and Kingo and neither will fully get control of the device. Both say there is some sort of system permission that they can't root. So, I went the direction to move apps from the internal memory to the card, but I found out that I have to partition the card. So, I downloaded Link2SD. But it didn't do the job. So I tried some app, can't even remember what it was, that allowed me to partition the sd card. I did get that done, as some person on some site suggested. But still, the thing acts crazy.

I am not sure if I should just throw it in the garbage or try to continue to fix it. Can the old operating system be erased and a new operating system be installed? I just don't know what to do with it.

This is a $20 cheapo, and so I'm not surprised it's having serious problems. As for rooting it, forget it I think. Any chance of returning it?
