Zoom function

I have just updated my hero phone and I was surprised it worked ok, normally things for me go wrong

However before when using the camera the zoom bar appeared on the left hand edge of the camera display and I could zoom using the trackball.

Now it has an icon on the left to go to my albums and no zoom scale. I can select it from the menu but again I cant zoom using the trackball. Anyone know how to get this back if possible?
