[Solved] Prevent TextView component from detecting touch

SOLVED: The component was an EditText rather than TextView lul

Hi there, some questions about preventing a component from detecting touch from users (like the title). I'm developing an app that has a background rendered with OpenGL that also has a few TextView components layered on top of them:

The desired functionality is so that each horizontal half of the "triangles" can be pressed, with the left side (if oriented towards oneself) decreasing the number and the right incrementing it.

My current struggle is removing the ability for the TextView components to be interacted with, as they greatly reduce the "clickable" areas within the triangles:

As you can see, when you press directly on the TextView the component highlights itself and prevents the touch from being detected by the OpenGL layer.

Solutions I've tried:
  • Adding
    XML:
    android:focusable="false"
    and
    XML:
    android:clickable="false"
to the component in my activity's XML. Does not work. The second screenshot has both of those attributes currently set to false.
  • Translating the TextView so that its Z value is less than the OpenGL layer: this hides the text (obviously).
  • Creating a third layer to overlay on top of both TextView and OpenGL layers; essentially changing the current OpenGL layer to a background and moving the touch detection code to an invisible or translucent layer at the top of the stack.
    • I haven't worked with OpenGL in a long time and would need to spend a lot of research figuring out how to create invisible or translucent shapes, so I was going to attempt this only if necessary.
Is there anything that I'm missing or overlooking? Anyone know any solutions for a problem like this?

Upgrading from an S9, looking to spend 500

Been thinking about the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G or the A53, wondering if these phones will outperform the S9, (I assume they will since the S9 is older tech but could be wrong). Anything out there good for 500 or under. I'm not really into cell phone games that use heavy graphics, but I do want a smooth UI, didn't want the overall feel to be laggy. Ideally 300 and under would be nice, but I can push to 500. Anyone know of good options?

Port number or new?

Should I port my number or get a new one? I thought about keeping my postpaid plan at least another month to make sure I'll like and have the same coverage I have now with total by Verizon. I got my a53 so wanted to ask others opinions I'm thinking about just porting my number since they use same towers as my postpaid Verizon account I have now.

Can't close a Bluetooth streaming app

Phone; Samsung Galaxy A52, updated recently
App; Librivox audiobooks
Car; 2022 Mazda 3

I listen to a lot of audiobooks on the Librivox app. I stream them via Bluetooth to my hearing aids, and to my car's audio system.
Recently, as soon as I start the car, the audiobook I'm listening to automatically starts playing, whether I want it to or not. I have to turn off the
car's audio to get it to stop.
On the phone's pull-down notification screen, there's a little Librivox widget (or whatever it's called) with a control to start or pause the stream.
That screen has CLEAR button to get rid of notifications I don't want, but it is greyed out for the Librivox widget.
I'm not sure, but this might have started with my latest Android update.
Any ideas?
I don't see any settings on the Librivox app or on my phone settings that help this issue. Thanks.

Android Devices which Stand Out from the Rest

This thread was inspired by a post from nickdalzell:

Oh believe me all the modern offerings are too close to Apple for me. Boring, bland, lacking features, feature removals, flat UI design.

***yawn***

Let's get the rapid pace going again, start packing features in, make each phone unique, and offer choices for everyone, from small screens to large, buttons or no buttons, keyboard sliders, hey, perhaps a modern Nokia N95? Let's make phones fun again!

There are some modern offerings that aren't boring. Let's talk about the exciting Android devices in this thread, starting with Planet Cosmo's "Astro Slide 5G": A smartphone that's also a very small laptop. It can run both Android and Linux.

TLG Golf

Tiger Wood and Rory McIlroy amongst others of a group called TMRW (pronounced tomorrow) had a ground breaking ceremony on a new indoor golf facility.
They plan having a golf league with some of the best players there starting next year. The league will be associated with the PGA and the players will be mic'd up.
(quoted)
The concept is this: Six teams of three PGA Tour players will square off in match play on a data-driven virtual course that also includes a short-game complex for chipping and putting. It'll be played on Monday nights, and will take only two hours, with in-arena fans all very close to the action. There will be 15 matches in the regular season, followed by semifinals and a final.

They already have some of the top PGA players committed to play. It could be a fun watch.

Pop-up, ultra-annoying, video ads?

I understand that the site is being worked on/overhauled/updated/etc., and maybe this is just temporary, but I'm CONTINUOUSLY getting pop-up video ads in the bottom right corner of my screen. I've never used [or needed, as a VIP member] any kind of ad-blocker on AF, and don't want to start now, but I literally cannot stand this.

It's not only that I dislike ads about as much as I dislike black licorice--and that's a LOT--but they're making me dizzy. Some of you old-timers may recall that a brain tumor and its subsequent surgical removal left me with some problems I'd never had before--I was on anti-seizure medication for a year post-op, and sternly warned that from here on out flashing lights, fast-moving things (like scenes going by really fast on TV), and other visual stimuli could cause dizziness and/or seizures.

Seeing these automatically-playing videos while trying to concentrate on reading or writing a post just isn't going to cut it. Like I'll have to stop visiting if they can't be removed. (Or controlled with an ad-blocker?) What's the story, @Rob?

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra screen problem is not actually a defect

There are a bunch of Galaxy S23 Ultra users complaining about a screen problem in the bottom left or right corner.

As it turns out, Samsung is aware of the "issue" and claims it's a feature not a bug- it's simply a known side effect of their screen technology and shouldn't cause any problems.

Have you noticed this on your device? Does it bother you?

Help Hot spot no longer shares internet after OS update

My Galaxy A51 installed update to One UI 5 (Android 13) a couple of weeks ago, and ever since then, my Hot Spot will not allow internet. That is, I can still connect my laptop to the hot spot on the Galaxy, and it correctly provide a DHCP IP address to my laptop, but the laptop says No Internet anc cannot access the internet while connected to the hot spot.

The Galaxy still has internet access, and I have been through many, many general online posts suggesting things like turning Airplane mode on/off and even went as far as Reset, which, among other things, reset the Hot Spot configuration to default settings. Still no internet through the Hot Spot, and it is critical now because I have an out-of-town trip that will require me to work from the vehicle while en route.

It seems clear that the failure is tied to the update, and my only theory is that there might be somewhere that the HotSpot app needs to get permission to use the internet. But I cannot find HotSpot under Apps to look at that or clear its cache. I am very loathe to do a factory reset, since then I would have to redo everything from scratch.

Ideas on how to get my hot spot to actually provide internet again?

What was Your First Android Device?

What was your first Android device?

I'll start: My first Android device was a Kindle Fire (2nd Gen. or so), not long after Amazon first brought out the Kindle Fire line. The screen was small, not much bigger than my modern iPhone's screen. It didn't have a good desktop: Finding and launching apps could be a pain, and shutting down apps was even more of a pain. But there was one thing it was good at: Letting me buy and read e-books! I have a soft spot for that little blue tablet.

Now, don't let this scare you off from buying a modern Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire has come a long way from the days of 2nd Gen.; you'll be able to launch and shut down apps just fine on a modern Kindle Fire tablet!
