Will this stop my phone from updating?

I have a Pixel 7 Pro phone running Android 13. I rooted the phone and when I run Root Checker it indicates 'Root access is properly installed..."

Despite this work, the phone still tries to update itself, despite my having turned off every setting related to updating. When I posted a question about this here, someone replied “Navigate to /system in System Files and a) Look for a file or directory related to the update service – which might be named something like Updater, OTA, etc, and b) rename these files.

When I used X-Plore to look for such files in the directory indicated, I found:
/bin/update_engine
/bin/update_verifier
/etc/init/update_engine.rc
/etc/init/update_verifier.rc
/lib64/libupdate_engine_stable-V1-cpp.so

and a *ota* search under /system found ten files, of which
/bin/otapreopt
may be relevant.

Would it be safe to rename these files? When I selected one of the aforementioned files, the X-Plore Rename button remained inactive; and when I looked at the file’s permissions, only Owner has Write privileges, i.e., the mode is 755. If renaming the files is the proper thing to do, how on earth can I do that?

Can we please stop the useless notifications please

I have asked multiple times to find some way to have me stop getting notifications like ''you have reached level 31'' but apparently nobody cares. i only want to get notified about replies, likes, mentioned in comments, etc. I swear it infuriates me to see the little notification bell light up only to find it's another useless notification. I have no setting to turn that crap off and it's making me angry to the point I am about to destroy the laptop. NO OTHER FORUM DOES THIS. I don't even know why that notification exists.

I need some help on which car to buy I used the driving assistance options a lot previously. It is definitely understood that you need to have a GPS built into the car, properly connected to the device in order to operate the driving assistance. The models that I am researching are the Honda Accord, Honda CRX, and Mazda 3. The year built on these models would be from the 2018 to 2020. Thanks for everyone's input.

Apple Support Blames App Developers for Major Limitation in iOS

iOS does not display vertical-only apps correctly, when using the iPad as a laptop (iPad standing horizontally, keyboard attached). This makes it impractical to use the keyboard with many apps, as it's only practical to use the keyboard when the iPad is positioned horizontally.

Specifically: Vertical-only apps appear sideways using the iPad as a laptop. Expected behavior is for vertical-only apps to appear right-side-up, but with black bars on the side of the screen, so that the apps are still vertical while the iPad is standing horizontally (like black bars on a square-screen TV when watching a widescreen movie).

signal-2023-12-01-183745_002.jpeg

This severely limits the iPad's usefulness as a laptop, but it gets worse: I asked Apple support how to have my iPad use black bars, so that I could use my iPad as a laptop with vertical-only apps. They said that that's not possible, and that I should complain to the app developers. That the operating system can't control how apps are displayed.

That's absurd. Ture, it'd be nice for all apps to have both horizontal and vertical orientation support. But the lack of black bars is an iOS problem, not an app problem, and blaming app developers for that is not appropriate behavior! It disrespects me by insulting my intelligence. It disrespects the app developers. And lastly, it disrespects the programmers of iOS by implying that they're not competent enough to fix this problem.

Contacts related issues

Galaxy s23, Windows 10

This is my first time here since the new "format". I have a few issues to discuss. Before I start, I also just wanted to mention that when I added the new bookmark, it's still titled "Android Forum".

Let me illustrate my second issue. I tried to use the Google assistant to call a business from my contacts. I got a message the business doesn't accept blocked phone numbers, so I added *82 in front of the number in my contacts. I retried the call, and it still came up as the number without the prefix. I again went back to edit the contact, but only the number with the prefix was there, The number in the "Title" showed no prefix.

Google Instagram Installation Mystery

I have two ASUS tablets both running Android 7 with the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 CPU.
Google Play Store installed the program on one but on the other responded "This app won't work for your device"
Anyone out there have an explanation? The Instagram help center doesn't cover installation issues. Nothing about
minimum requirements.

Delete a notification schedule??

My phone is a rooted google Pixel 7 Pro running Android 13. As I had previously reported, when Flip-to-Shhh in enabled, when the phone is flipped and this feature stops it from ringing, it also turns on ‘Do not Disturb’. That this happens is beyond idiotic, but I think I found the cause.

In Settings -> Notifications -> General / Do not disturb -> General / Schedules there is a Flip to Shh setting. I figure that turning this off would disable the turning on of ‘Do not Disturb’. However, despite my having disabled this schedule, it turned itself back on – incredible.

So my question is this: How on earth can I delete this schedule?

Installed Build Tools revision 33.0.1 is corrupted. Remove and install again using the SDK Manager

I have done a clean install of Android Studio Giraffe. I previously had Dolphin. I am creating a new project trying just a basic Empty Project with the Java.

I get the error
Installed Build Tools revision 33.0.1 is corrupted. Remove and install again using the SDK Manager

I have tried the solution recommended by @vikrant-pandey (and others) on this link, but I do not have a dx.bat or dx.jar d8.bat or d8.jar anywhere in my Windows 10 folders:
C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Android\Sdk\build-tools\33.0.1

Anyone know what I am doing wrong?
How do I uninstall and install 33.0.1 from the SDK manager?

Medicare supplement plans

You are likely sick of the commercials, I know that I am. However, seniors with medial needs, have the opportunity to shop providers of their supplement plans each year. My wife has to shop her drug plan each year. Not necessarily to find a cheaper provider but to find a plan that covers the majority of her prescriptions. It becomes a big pain to find the best provider that covers or at least supplements the cost of her drugs. It's also a hassle to find a provider that allows her to purchase the drugs where she wants to take her business. The plans seem to change the drugs they push and the places they want you to shop each year. It should not be such a hassle and the stress it creates is unkind. A person is forced to shop the plans or it could amount to a great out of pocket expense for those in need. Shame on the industry! It's really an evil game they play with the seniors knowing that some will not shop and have to pay the cost.

If you are someone you know is caught up in this madness, I'd like to hear your take on the game and how you are effected.

[App][Free] Capture and Organize Real-World Colors for Your Projects

Hello there,

I often see colors in the real world that I want to use in my apps or websites. I tried to find an app for capturing color codes from real things, but all the ones I found were either full of ads, had in-app purchases, or their interfaces were too complicated. So, I decided to make my own app.

My app is pretty straightforward – it helps you capture colors, organize them into different projects, and write notes for each color about how you plan to use it.

It's the ideal tool for designers, artists, and creatives, providing instant access to essential color codes (HEX, RGB, HSB) for use in various digital projects. Whether you're working on graphic design, interior decorating, or digital art, this app turns your environment into an endless palette of colors. It's a perfect way to remember the context of your color choices, from conceptual design ideas to specific client needs.

I'm still working on the app and would really like some feedback. I'm especially interested in how you find the user interface and any suggestions for making it better.

Here’s the link to the app: Color Capture - Apps on Google Play

Thanks a lot for any feedback!

Acreage Calculations

I'm trying to figure out acreage of my RV lot. I've looked at few acreage calculators, but they only do square lots. My RV lot is a large triangle. Here are the measurements:

Front of lot by the road 48.7 feet
Length 125.85 feet
Width at the end of the lot 106.37 feet

Is anyone good at math to figure out acreage?

Will AI allow our loved ones to “live on” in a sense?

Part of an email I received this morning included the following bit:

Silicon Valley codes a new grieving process

The Future. Several AI companies are marketing services that hope to make grieving a thing of the past. These AI-powered recreations of loved ones may have the power to provide a psychological cushion for those spiraling from loss, but they could also become a crutch for people looking simply for comfort, not closure.
Broken heart bot
Grieving the loss of a loved one is hard… so some AI firms are trying to ease the pain, per Vox.
  • “Grief tech” startups like Replika, StoryFile, Seance AI, and HereAfter AI provide services, such as the creation of virtual avatars of loved ones and interactive video conversations.
  • These “companions” provide grievers something they can talk to whenever they miss their lost loved one — giving them a gentler way to let go.
  • While some have found these services comforting, others have been hit with unannounced updates that totally break the illusion — a phenomenon that could be retraumatizing.
Grief counselors warn that the rise of grief tech could make people reliant on these tools to cope or, worse, avoid the natural human process of grieving altogether. Could the ambition to optimize grief simply postpone the process, prolonging our psychological need for closure?
Whether or not that’s a good thing may be a deeper question about the role death plays in society.

Although thinking about it, it makes sense as part of the AI evolution; after all, Carrie Fisher was in the last Star Wars film via CG, so couple that with some AI modeling/sampling and you could talk with her anytime you like.

I’m rather disturbed by this use of AI, though it’s novel enough that I’m still reflecting on it all.

Since our name change suggests we’re all about early tech adopters, this seems a good place to discuss it. ;)

So what thoughts do you all have?

Stuck in Loop

My daughters Samsung Tab A is stuck in a loop. It gets to where it ask for her google email and password, we put in the only one she's used on the tablet and it'll again ask her to enter one that's been used on this device. I went into the bootmanager and did a factory reset, but it still gets to this same point and begins to loop.

Anyway to do a true factory reset without getting past that screen? Perhaps it can be re flashed with the original image or is there an abd command that will get us past this loop?
