NCAA Men's Basketball 2023

I love college basketball and my favorite team is the Kansas Jayhawks... duh. Early polls have them ranked #1 which means nothing. Tonight they travel to play #17 ranked Kentucky Wildcats. It should be a good game that will be on ESPN in a half hour or so. I also root for my local university, Wichita State U, where I was a sysop on their BBS years ago and where my kids went to college. Do you have a favorite team?

"Fully charged in 8 hours"

OK, this was just a catch phrase but it did say it. Suddenly my Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is saying incorrect or bad charging times. It said "8 hours 12 minutes to fully charge at 19%" I unplugged and plugged back in "1 hour 55 minutes" I click the lock screen on and off "3 12 minutes until charged".

What could be going on here? the cable or phone or a glitch?

Samsung M51GPS issues

I have odd GPS issues cropping up. While walking the dog I used to use Fit, Google tracking, just to get distance and time. I would put the phone in my back pocket upside down (yeah, I know the gps sensor is at the top) and it has tracked well for a couple of years. As of about a month ago it stopped registering any GPS data unless I held it in my hand. I tried the same thing with Strava and had the same result.

I do notice however, that I can get a Strava map if I put the phone in my back pocket right side up. But the maps all seem to be very badly drawn, not reflecting my walking path very well at all. Even when running, using my Garmin gps watch around a track, the loops around the track are not nearly as well formed as they were several weeks ago.

It is almost like the GPS signal has somehow gotten weaker. I did clear the Google Maps cache from my phone, but that didn't seem to make any difference.

Any suggestions of what else i could try?

Thanks.

Samsung S9+ MDM Mode + the client doesnt remember screen lock password

Hi, I work in a technical assistance department and I'm still specializing in software, a week ago an S9+ sm-g9650 android 10 binary came in, the customer brought the cell phone here because she ended up forgetting the screen password, when I went to format the cell phone through recovery mode, the factory reset screen did not appear, since there was no such option, I downloaded the stock rom of the cell phone G9650ZHU9FVF2 and tried to install it via Odin and via SamFW Tool, but both software gave an error and a message appeared warning that the cell phone it was in mdm, I already tried to download cm.tar.md5 and install it in the AP part of Odin but it also gives an error and MDM remains blocked, I already tried to enter Brom mode to use ST-MTK Universal but it is not recognized in Chimera Tool! I don't remember when it was, but after a reboot it went from being a standard password to a password of letters and numbers with the following phrase "Your phone is encrypted for security. To initialize the device, enter your password." What do I do? I don't know what to do anymore!

Totally dead screen, need data recovery?!

I have a customer's phone with a totally black and unresponsive screen, but the phone is on. I get the notification sound on my pc when I plug it in and it shows up as an empty drive because it's not signed in.

Smart switch sees it, but complains about no usb transfer mode and the phone beeps telling me it sees smartswitch, but no response to tapping around on the black screen.

Picture a running computer with no monitor attached.

This person has some audio files that they desperately need to recover.

No SD card, no cloud backup, no backup at all of any kind and no way to control the phone in any way that I know of.

If there's no way to do it, just tell me that please and please don't offer solutions that the strangling limitations I've just noted have already ruled out. I've been researching this for an hour.

Any help would be enormously appreciated.
Thanks.

EDIT: Oh yeah. This is a Samsung A51

Need help with notifications

I've had my first smartphone for about a year, and I still can't get the hang of how (some) notifications are supposed to work. (I have a Galaxy A03s, which I bought from Verizon.)

My general problem is that notifications pop up saying only the most general things – for example, that there are "new updates." But what's supposed to be updated isn't described, and tapping the notification makes it simply disappear. It seems to me, based on my experience with computers, is that the coherent way for a notification to work would be for it to act as a link to a place which is relevant to whatever the notification is about, but apparently they're not designed to work that way.

Notifications re updates aren't that big of a deal, of course, because I can always go to one of several places (e.g., the Google Play Store or the Galaxy Store) to see what's what. But I've received other notifications that were so uninformative as to be useless.

This morning, I got this notification, which said this, and nothing more:

"Activation incomplete
Please contact customer service (800) 922-0204 for assistance."

I haven't installed any apps for the last several months, and am not aware of anything that needs to be "activated," so I have no idea what this message could possibly refer to.

I Googled that phone number, which led me to this discussion on the Verizon forums:

The discussion didn't resolve anything, except to suggest to me that phishing or the like may or may not be involved in some way, so I'm not going to call that number any time soon.

I understand how phishing generally works for phone calls and text messages. But this notification is from "within" my own phone, isn't it? What am I supposed to make of such a thing? If it's legitimate, because something was supposed to be activated, how can I find out what was supposed to be activated – without calling the suspicious phone number? And just how are notifications in general supposed to work, so when I read and uninformative one in the future, I can actually make use of it, or at least understand what the heck it's about?

Thanks.

P.S. I know I can try to ask Verizon about this, but my experience with their support has not been good, not worth waiting the 40 minutes or longer that it usually takes to talk to someone.

Can't attach file with Files and Media: Media permission

Hello! When an app I use has Files and Media permission set to All Files ("allow management of all files") I can use all my files within this app with no problem. But when another app I use has Files and Media permission set to "Media" ("allow access to media only") I cannot attach any file no matter where I put it (I've tried DCIM, Downloads, etc.). I can still browse all folders of my local memory, but as I select any file, the file exploration mode ends and I'm being brought back to my app (in my case mail app) with no file attached.

Is there a very specific location of this Media folder (or bunch of folders)? I couldn't find such info on the internet.

I need to find location of this Media folder because the app I want to use doesn't have the All Files permission option available.

EDIT: I can't attach files in Proton Mail app, but I can do it in Fair Email app with same permissions set, so it looks like a bug in Proton Mail. Sorry for bothering you - I've got this problem in other apps too, so I thought it's not app related. Looks like many apps have this bug .

Contacts app on MIUI

Hey. I got an issue with my contacts app on MIUI 12. when I start to insert the first few numbers of my contacts, for some of them the phone predicts the contact name and brings it up and for some it doesn't do that. anyone has any idea what's up with it? I would like my phone to predict all my contacts when I insert the first few numbers of their phone number so I could just tap on the name and call them instead of inserting the whole phone number. thanks in advance.

Pressure Cooking

Anyone like to cook under pressure? I started pressure cooking twenty five years ago or so. My mother had a pressure cooker and pressure fryer though she never cooked under pressure. A guy that I grew up with shared sysop duties with me on our local U's bbs and he turned me onto cooking under pressure. There are many benefits of cooking under pressure. The pressure increases the temperature in which liquid turns to gas vapor, thus increasing the cook temp beyond just boiling. This decreases the time of the cook and also helps break down fats and connecting tissues of meats. It produces a more tender dish and is healthier in less time. A pressure cooker is a fantastic tool for cooking dried beans. Again, less time for the cook is good but the higher temp released more starch from beans and the end product is tender and healthier. Cooking chicken under pressure not only produce tender and moist chicken cuts but the broth is extra flavorful for the higher temp pulls flavor out of the bones. One of my pressure cookers has a tray that sits above the water for steaming veggies. Steamed vegetables hold their color and texture while becoming tender.

I will admit that I've gotten away from pressure cooking. Ever since I bought my first smoker, it has become my cooking tool of choice. I just love the added smoke flavor I get from using a smoker. Meats are tender for they cook slowly at a low temp. Smoking meats is a great cooking option. However, as I'm smoking a tri-tip as I type, I started thinking about how good that cut of meat might be if I had pressure cooked it. I would have rubbed it with oil, seasoned it, brazed it in the bottom of the pressure cooker, added water and some bay leaves, and then let it cook under pressure.

Anyone into pressure cooking? Any special cooks you want to share?

Biometrics Sign On

In the past I have read that that credit card apps won't use face recognition for sign on because it's not secure enough. Credit card apps do use fingerprint touch ID because it is much more secure.

Suddenly Wells Fargo and Discover card added face recognition to their biometric sign on. In settings for both, biometric sign on is either on or off. I can't shutoff face recognition and leave fingerprint touch ID to sign on.

So was there some big change in facial recognition that makes it more secure now?

Phone not working

Since about a week, I have a problem with both incoming and outgoing calls.
When someone calls me, connection is refused but I do see the call as "missed".
When I dial out, it simply refuses to connect.

This has happened now 3 or 4 times. Every time, restarting Android solves the problem temporarily.
But the problem comes back, and I don't know about it until someone contacts me through Whatsapp to tell me I am unreachable.

I have tried to clean the SIM card using alcohol, and repositioned it in the second SIM slot, but no change.
Since the call does come in as "missed", I am guessing the SIM card is not the cause.
But what is? Can someone point me in the right direction?
