Hero USB Tethered Internet

I'm using a mac and I just learned that tethered internet is only capable on a PC using HTC Sync. I was wondering if anyone knew a work around. I would prefer if the work around is free.
 
It's possible to turn the phone into a wireless hotspot if your phone is rooted.
