Already cracked my G1. Replacement parts???

So I've been known to be a little hard on phones and yes, I've already cracked the screen on my G1. It's not the actualy LCD screen thats cracked, just plastic cover thats over the screen. Anyone know where I can get a replacement for this??
 
I don't usually take out insurance on anything but did for my G1.

On an 18 month contract i don't want to be shelling out again if it gets damaged!

Definitely worth the extra few pounds a month.

This is not as nice as it sounds. I was just on the phone with Tmo support. that insurance only gets you a replacement after you pay the deductible...$130.00.

So, 5 bucks a month plus 130 bucks is what it really costs. If you break phones in the first year of ownership, it might be worth it. You have to work the numbers based on how likely you think you are of needing a replacement before you've basically paid the difference in the premium.
 
Eeek so sorry to hear that. I've always insured our phones i can't imagine what you must be going through right now. That sucks! :(

Me 3 on the pics. Sounds like you might need to try a DIY solution before you shell out the dough.
 
All of you guys are all as sick as i am....btw, anyone see that video of the soldiers that shot down those Iraqis? Man, that was some good stuff. so yea, post those pics up!

Here's a pic of it. But realize that its NOT the actualy LCD screen that is cracked. When the screen is on you can barely tell its cracked, its only when its off that is really stands out.

Honestly.. I'm not sure how it happened. I'm assuming it happened while it was in my pocket. Maybe I bumped into something...?? ANYWAYS, back to my original post... It seems like the cracked piece would be fairly easy to remove, I'm just wondering if there are replacements for it out yet...?
 
Cat knocked a heavy decorative cup off a shelf and my phone happened to be its landing spot. I got the phone 17 days ago, but since the store I bought it from (best buy) failed to tell me there was insurance, not just a warranty no one will help me. I called tmobile, went to a tmobile store, and went back to best buy. Basically no insurance-Im screwed. Ive had the exact same phone since I signed up with t mobile when I was 16, so of course Ive never heard of phone insurance. I would expect that since Im buying something that relies so heavily on a insurance that the person selling it to me should mention something thats obviously so important as insuring your phone. I will defiantly not be re-newing my tmobile plan, nor be shopping at Best Buy.

I would think after 8 years of service with tmobile and always paying my bill on time and never having any issues, I could get some kind of "good customer" service, I wouldn't even mind paying the 130 dollar fee, but to have to shell out enough for a brand new one...come on. But oh well, lesson learned: do not buy cell phones at department stores, and defiantly buy insurance, even if you don't know it exists.

The image is semi okay, but the lcd is screwed up on the side, the phone is usable...as of now, but is it going to get worse?


Am I completely at a loss? any tips

 
Ouch...sadly I dont see a way of recovering that...the damage in the lower left corner looks to bee to the actual LCD screen itself...even if you did replace the top glass, the damage underneath would not go away and possibly will get worse.

My recommendation...put the phone away for a bit and search ebay or craigslist for one that is going for cheap because of water damage or something.

Have you tried talking to the retention department at Tmobile CC yet? That might be worth a try since you have been with them awhile. I have been with tmobile since before they even had the tmobile name here...and I have yet to have a bad experience...the more plesant you are...the more helpful the reps will be. (I even had one rep who helped me get my iphone up and running actually send me a xmas card last year :)
 
Does the touch screen still function? I'm thinking that what broke is the touch screen surface.

This is the only broken G1 I could find on eBay. You could probably frankenstein them into a good one.
 
I called tmobile to buy my phone and the rep told me about the insurance. Best Buy sucks. I would take it back to the store and demand to see the store manager. If he won't help you, then ask for the district manager. Be firm but respectful.
 
I, too, have cracked the screen of my G1 and am rather embarrassed to have made the same mistake so many times with touchscreen phones in the past six years.

In San Francisco, I have in the past had LCD/screen replacement done by "Kangaroo Mobile", which has a local site here. I contacted them about repairing the G1, and was told that to their knowledge, no one has yet begun to manufacture sell the requisite replacement parts (which according with HTC's development practices are not as common between similar/virtually-identical devices as one would hope) to set things aright.

I looked at the website of http://pocketpctech.com , and they, too, seem yet to offer replacement for the G1.

The cost will be over $100 for parts and labor no matter where one goes. IIRC, the quote for HTC Tytn replacement by pocketpctech was quite high, at $150.

There will inevitably be a repair offering for this device, and I'm frankly quite surprised that the posters before me in this thread appear naive enough to cry "complete device replacement" where there it is so natural to expect that the thing can easily be fixed. I guess that's exciting, since those same people are likely to be new to handsets of this class and perhaps also new users of Linux. Bright side.

It looks as if we will have to wait for an off-brand provider of a matching LCD/touchscreen combination --but the only question is whether or not to buy a new device while waiting for a repair plan for the "old" one.
 
This may seem rather odd, but if you end up buying a new one and have the broken one on the side, id be willing to buy the battery plate off you. If you come into contact with a spare at any time, please PM me...mine is rather....flimsy.
 
I feel your pain. I took my g1 out of my pocket a few weeks ago and saw that somehow the camera lens had broken. I have not dropped the phone or had any other "incidents" that I am aware of. Camera still takes the same sub-par pictures as always, I can't really tell any difference, but now the bar-code scanner does not work at all. This is definitely not the sturdiest piece of hardware. :mad:
