"Help, my Incredible was stolen" thread

Instead of remote wipe, I think we need one better. You know you're probably not getting the phone back anyway so we need an app that will make the phone short circuit and either explode or give the holder a nice jolt. Now that is vigilante justice! :D
 
There's also Where's My Droid. You can set special messages so that when you text the set text to your phone from another device, it can turn on the ringer if set to silent and make it go off and can also return GPS data so that you can track it.

The tracking apps I've tried aren't accurate unless GPS is turned on on the phone. The one I tried without GPS on showed my phone about two miles from where it actually is. I'm not sure what use the app would be even if GPS were turned on. I don't know that cops will go running around the city with you looking for your phone.

Lookout doesn't seem to have remote wipe capabilities on it unless I'm reading the description wrong. Please correct me if I am.

Mobile Defense seems to get great reviews, but it also looks like it's in a closed beta. I'd love to try it out if there's a place I can legally get it.

I tried WaveSecure and was not impressed. It locked my phone the way it was supposed to, but I could easily by pass the lock screen and the alarm. The only things it gives you the option to remotely wipe is Contacts, SMS, Calendar, Photos, Videos, Storage Card and Call Logs. I was afraid (though I didn't test this out) that if I wiped the contacts off my phone that it would still sync with my GMail account and wipe them out there too (my contacts are all gmail contacts). Same thing with the Calendar.

I would love an app that would give me the ability to remotely do a hard reset on the phone and wipe the SD card. That I would pay for.
 
I have mobile defense, just tried it, located phone within a rock throw away.
They say it's still public beta, so just google it

It's worth a try so give them a call. In my experience though, the car insurance only covers things that were stolen from the car (not outside the car sitting unattended on a rock) and the home owners insurance is the same.

You also have to account for your deductiable, which is most commonly $500. So if the total value of your stuff was $700 (just throwing a number out there) will you only get a check for $200. While $200 is nice, it's not even to replace the phone.

The ones people use are Lookout, Mobile Defense, and Wave Secure. Other than Lookout, the latter two are able to remote wipe. However, from my own experiences, Lookout was the one that worked best in terms of tracking and just overall functionality, and from what I hear, the developers are working on a remote wipe option

Yeah the deductible is like 500 for the homeowners. So it really isn't worth it. But I hadd insurance for the phone so WOOH!!!! But it is on back order....
 
Another reason to not file a loss phone claim on your homeowners insurance or car insurance is that most companies will start charging you more for insurance after you make a claim. You got to weigh out the cost benefit to making a claim. Phone insurance is best route to go I think.

Anyone use SMS Erase?

Do you think once Android 2.2 comes to DInc that maybe more remote wipe apps will appear? Since no one can get into Mobile Defense now, and the other two I hear are just OK, seems like there is room for more remote wipe competition.

Man that really sucks. Freakin scum bags. Are you still out a phone? I have an old LG ENV just laying around collecting dust. If you want it, its yours. Free of course. ;-). Nothing fancy but it can hold you over. Let me know

BTW going from a DINC to a dumbphone sucks....bad.

Yikes. I'd honestly call the locksmith ASAP. I had a friend who got her car stolen before, and the thieves then used the registration in the glove box to find out where she lived. They watched until no one was home and used the garage opener that was in the car to open the garage door, went in and stole even more things. Its a shady world we live in.
 
If I were, I would even file a police report and tell them which items the thief has... Gosh, I HATE thieves!!!! Some people ruin their life over stupidest things...how reTArTed! Also, another thing you may try...is call VZW and see if they can locate the phone. I have had them do it for me, but the phone has to be on...so if the theif has it off, then they probably won't be able to. Why don't you have asurion send you a DX :p

Deductibles sometimes vary depending on the situation so don't assume anything. I have a $500 deductible on my homeowners policy, but i have 3 smartphones listed (scheduled) on the policy also. The 3 phones are each insured for $500, no deductible and i'm covered for theft, loss, breakage, etc. It only costs $14.83 per phone per year.

I dropped my droid eris a few weeks ago in the garage and it landed face down and shattered the glass. I called my agent and told him what happened - and he told me to just go buy a new one and send him the receipt. I bought one Monday AM at best buy, faxed him the receipt and had my $500 by Friday. Kind of a pain in the but to get the new phone all set up like i wanted it, but at least it works.

Finally, no change in insurance rates because i filed a claim.

Your rates wouldn't go up for this type of claim. There are collision claims (which WILL raise your rates) and comprehensive claims. You can also have 2 different deductables for them. I have $250 for comprehensive and $500 for collision.

Theift falls under comprehensive, which doesn't raise your rates.

Another fun trick? If you see a deer in the road, just hit the damn thing. Hitting a deer is a comprehensive claim. If you swerve to miss it and hit a tree, guardrail or heaven forbid another car, it's now a collision claim.
 
If you file a police report, make sure you have the serial numbers ready. If you do, they can place the S/N in the stolen property database. If some jackass is caught buying/selling it, they get a free trip to the pokey.

Good advice about the insurance .... but an even better reason to hit the deer in the road is that a LOT more people are killed swerving to avoid deer than actually hitting deer.
