You've personally tried this in "MOST AREAS"? Really? Haven't been able to do this yet to my own phone, but I think 'most' issues for using this tid-bit is user error. Maybe if those users don't fully understand what they are doing, they should ask about it here first to avoid any problems in the future. Just a thought.

What areas does the phone not work???? It still works for me in 3g and 1x areas. And as for the confusion part of your thread if this was the case then there wouldnt be any talk about root as this is more confusing than any other part of any forums surrounding Android for most users. I appreciate your input but a simple , Hey my phone stopped working in an area that I had 2 bars in would been better for everyone.

Works pretty well actually. Just remember it's not available everywhere as stated so you might need to remember to switch back if you leave your area.
My friend found this fix a couple days ago and so far it was worked perfect. Been testing it before I posted it but you beat me to it. So far all of my calls have come in a lot better. I have noticed on some calls though that when I talk it makes the speaker buzz like it is trying to come back over the speaker.

Sorry it's a repost ... forum searching is a PITA ... someone needs to invent forum software with actually functional search ... anyway ... thanks for the corroboration ... would this help with dropped calls? I NEVER experienced dropped calls with ANY cell phone (always a Verizon customer) until I got my DInc... :/

Make sure you save the directions on how to do this. You don't want to travel and get stuck in an are3a that doesn't have EVRC-B and forget how to make the switch back.
This will not help with signal strength and dropped calls. It will only help with the call quality. It adds another compression for the call. It helps with the "garbled" calls that people have complained about.

Even if the voice calling won't work, he'd still have internet to look it up.

Here's what I did. I have my phone setup to only display my Google contacts and use them exclusively. I created a phone contact called "menu" and have the ##778 as the number. So, all I have to do is go in to the dialer and start dialing "m" "e" and it's right there. This way it's in the phone and I don't have to look at it in my contacts all the time. I can remember the rest after the ##778 part.

During weekdays I use my phone to make about three to four hours of calls per day. I also switch back and forth from google voice and regular cell calls. My experience is that this is a pain in the arse because you have to keep switching back and forth since the phone will be unable to dial out if you are not in the EVrc-b area. In my opinion, Verizon would have given us EVRC-B if it was ready for use and as of right now it is not and still in development. also my phone never had issues with call quality. I mean not all calls are perfectly clear but clear enough that we can carry on the conversation. This has been my experience with every cell phone in the past and not just the inc. The difference in call quality between EVRC and EVRC-B is not a huge difference.
How does signal strength xxx dBm correlate with the codecs 8kbit/s, 4kbit/s, 2kbit/s and 0.8kbit/s rates?
In my area I am seeing signal strengths from -77 dBm to -98dBm. Calls seem good to me with and without the change. No dropped calls. I turned on the EVRC-B and noticed for the first time "cell standby 8%" Same percent at Wifi and Bluetooth... I'll monitor more. (App BatteryMinder)

Same situation here in the Tampa Bay Area.....no fast busy signal, just silence and then eventually the pop up with "The network is busy. Please try again later." No incoming calls either, they just go to voicemail.
