The Keys to a Happy Eris

More "Keys"

- Call Confirm (love this app)
- Letting the battery run all the way down and then charging it full

Simple, but very effective

I don't agree. Although sometimes you may need to do this to calibrate a battery meter graph or something like that, lithium batteries prefer to be "topped off" as much as possible.

Yes this. Its good to do every so often, in order to calibrate the battery meter, but you shouldn't discharge it completely everytime. This is why if you store a Li-Ion you should have it charged, because if it drains completely, you can cause damage to the cells and fall into a "deep-discharge" state.

This is good to know. Thanks!

I agree on the root being a great way to keep a "happy eris", although as far as the task killer goes, after rooting I overclocked and have gone a few days with no task killer. Before overclocking I had to keep the task killer to prevent phone lag, but now it is much snappier. Happy to be rid of the task killer.

Here is what I do:

1. removed the HTC animated weather app
2. switched to Handcent messaging (much better and faster!)
3. Remove the Favorites/speed dial widget (seems to slow down the phone as well)

This makes for a fairly speedy phone.

i'll steal ddustinn's list (slightly modified):
- Root
- No task killer
- Overclock
- No Sense (even though I used to like it)
- Handcent
- Dialer One
- Launcher Pro
- Spare Parts
- xtrROM
- Apps2SD

also make sure your settings are all up to par.... everytime i reflash or do a wipe i always go through each and every setting category and make sure i have it the way i need it and the way it will conserve the most battery...

turning off gmail sync and removing widgets that update frequently will help as well...

root
xtrROM 3.03
LauncherPro
Google Apps reloaded back in.

Things are very smooth. I even got 3 bars several times today. I got several calls today and the dialer was fast and responsive and closed immediately back to main screen when the call was complete.

Only bad thing... I am now a rom junkie...

I'm on my first Eris and while I've had a few mishaps I've been very happy with it lately...

-Launcher Pro
-Advanced Task Killer
-Turning off 3g & wifi unless I'm going to use it.
-Restart every 3 days

I've had better battery life lately and no lag issues. Still getting the silent bug every so often, but it really only takes a couple of minutes to cut he phone off and on so I've just become used to it/over it.

Just wanted to announce that LaucherPro is awesome (thanks to all who suggested it). If you are tired of the Sense UI slowing you down, try this app. My Eris is now running smooth and easy.

LauncherPro (no more sense) and Handcent (stock messaging alerts turned off) and that's all I need.

Yeah actually everything you said in the original post plus root it and use setCPU to help with the battery - mine is set to 710mhz max but when the screen is off and it sleeps, the cpu is cranked way down. That and the 1750 battery (whatever it really has inside) works fine for a day's use.

The weather widget being ousted from the main screen was surprisingly effective; too bad, I like the animated weather..

Also, call log trimmer added so I don't get a zillion items in call history bogging down the phone screen :)

I guess my list would be a happy Eris / happy Eris-owner.

1) Treat the phone like your personal computer. Only install applications that you will use and make sure you are obtaining the programs from trusted sources. (For example, don't just download an .apk off of Rapidshare because you didn't want to pay for the app.)

2) Keeping the trend with #1, be realistic. Don't tax your hardware too much to the point it begins to perform poorly, drain the battery excessively or fail to respond at all. Know the limits of your device and operate within them. While rooting your phone and utilizing a custom rom will give you a performance boost, keep in mind you can only go so much further.

3) What works for others may not always work for you. Case in point - overclocking. Some kernels can go well into 800mhz without any issues. Not every Eris can handle that, though. If your device can, that's wonderful! Most people can comfortably overclock to 768mhz w/ JIT enabled and be just fine. I personally didn't notice a substantial jump in performance beyond 710mhz so I usually left ROM's such as Conap's alone. The point here is that while you theoretically may be able to do something, it doesn't mean you should.

4) Don't sacrifice functionality for performance. CELBFroyo is a fast 2.2 based ROM. Camera isn't fully working yet on the 2.2 builds. (As of this post) For some that isn't a big deal, for me it's an issue. Yes, I can download a camera app from the Android Market, but that's just silly. Then you have the occasional bug like the notification LED sticking. Again, silly. The development of the ROM is something I will watch closely though and once it hits the degree of stability that ELB 2.8 has, I will likely try it again.

For the time being I'm running stock 2.1 w/ Sense, including the July update. I first used the unrooting instructions over on XDA, then playing around with my phone I installed the wrong ROM off of shipped-roms. It had Android 1.03 (!) if I remember correctly - apparently an engineering build? I used the RUU for MR2 and got my device fixed but getting the phone to boot properly into the bootloader took a few minutes to figure out - it failed numerous times because of the USB connection dropping. I then did the 2.1 update and forced the July update. My signal is actually higher on stock for the time being and I haven't noticed significant lag on my device.

5) Enjoy your phone, but don't over-enjoy it. I spent waaaaay too much time tweaking my phone rather than using it....

In the end that made my device less of a tool for everyday use and more of a project that I had to constantly maintain.

Turn off notification in the stock messaging app. At the top of this forum is the Root thread. All Things Root (Eris) - Android Forums
Sticky #2 Guide

I came across ShoutOut and I loved it but had to unistall b/c I couldn't figure out how to make it my default messaging system so I got double text messages which was super annoying. SHouOut had voice to text which is pretty cool.

I went on the forum and it said that once I get the first message after install it would ask what I want as default but that never happpened. Then it said to to the native messaging app and clear the default but I cant because its not even highlighted...

Soooo frustrating. I am new to the smartphone thing - any suggestions?:confused::confused::confused:

Sorry to blow your bubble but the idea of increasing battery performance by charging/discharging often is a myth...

Li-ion batteries don't have memory effect.

Heat due to charging and deposities on the internal electrodes also as a result of charging process decrease the battery's lifetime.

I try to go through and figure out what some of that stuff goes to. The stuff that I figure out I just clean up the way I see fit. A good example from my stuff was easymoney. It is a banking app that makes backups of all data on a daily basis. I had files on there from last December when I originally bought my phone. They started to take up over 8Mb of space on the card and I was able to cut that down to less than 5kb.

The stuff that I don't know what it is I will copy over to my desktop or laptop and then delete. I know it sounds crazy, but if you copy the files off your card to the computer then you are covered for the most part. Then if something messes up you can always just restore the data you removed.

With mine, once I had it running EVERYTHING, but the OS moved over to my card. It is running very stable and I have about 143 MB of free space on the phone. The only stuff that stores on the phone is cache.

What happens if th SD card got damaged and you can't access anything on it?

I kind of like the taskiller for one use, funny as it sounds, but it tells me the applications that are loaded in memory. To my amazement, many things get loaded by themselves, like the Amazon MP3 store (WTF). I never use it, but this thing always finds its way into my device.

The voice dialer is another oneis always there.

OTD after rooting did you install any ROMs or you are at stock 2.1 plus the 13 Mb patch?
Peter

I'm running Evil Eris 3.0 and it is just about perfect for me.

I back up my SD card almost daily so I won't lose the data. Those backups include one from titanium that has all my apps too. I would have problems for a little but, but I have other cards too.

Take a look at system panel, it will provide better info on what is running and what state it is running in. It also gives CPU, battery and other data too.

1. I rooted (easy).
2. I overclocked (easy).

3. I want to move apps to sd card, but it looks complicated.

I currently have 52mb of internal space available, which is plenty, but it would be nice to free up more.

I'm running Aloysius 2.0.1 v12, which says it has APP2SD. Just not sure what to do next. Call me a n00b at rooting. Haha.
