link email icon to google mail?

Is there a way to link the email icon on home page to google mail, or must I always go to applications to get to it?

With launcher pro you can set what ever you want for dock icons. Not directly an answer though, sorry.

1. Click on Applications
2. Tap the Menu key > View type > Customizable grid
3. Tap the Menu key > Edit
4. Drag the Gmail icon over the Email icon to replace it
5. Tap the Menu key > Save
6. (Optional) Tap the Menu key > View type > Alphabetical grid to restore the Applications Menu back to the original layout

Is it possible to keep the default icon though?

I use K-9, and while I swapped out the button just fine, the default K-9 icon is ugly and I'd prefer a standard/generic "mail" icon for the dock (like the default).

Not with the default TouchWiz launcher, you could change the dock icons if you used something like LauncherPro though.
