Help DROID Incredible random restart/reboot problem

So you have not installed any apps/widgets?

Sounds like a app issue or user issue.

Mine has never just rebooted...

I'm convinced the issue is location dependent. The incredbile does not like some cell towers in low signal areas. These phones were confirmed rebooting in Seattle (which was fixed by Verizon). There is no reason to believe this problem does not exist in other areas, although it's less common.

Mine goes through reboot spells. I'll go two or three days no reboot the all of a sudden I'll be sitting on the couch and bam 5 reboot in 3 hours. I think mine is a tower issue, I live 2 miles from the west Virginia board at the tip of Virginia and Verizon does not cover west Virginia. Also if I cross over it to west Virginia it will reboot at times.

I have been a computer tech for 10 years now.

I know how to trouble shoot a problem..

I have tested all three that had the same problem, stock, factory settings with no installed apps. I repeat no installed apps. I even swapped out sd cards that were formatted and also tried it with no sd cards.

I have also tried it with 2 different batteries to eliminate that..

The only common factor is.... DRUM ROLL.... The hardware, the stock OS, and my Low signal.

Thats it..

I actually want it to be something easy like an app causing it..

When i bought the Droid x.. i had my X activated and had my Incredible sitting on my desk while i was messing with my new phone..

Even with my Incredible De-activated, it rebooted 2 times. When you activate a new phone and the old one gets deactivated, the de-activated phone still shows bars, but you cannot make calls.

Thought id throw that out there.

The next person that informs me that its prolly an application that i installed that is causing the problem.. gets a big f-u. lol

I've only had mine reboot twice since i received it april 28th. And.....surprise, surprise both times it was in a VERY VERY low signal area. IMHO this is completely related to signal strength in some way.

I called Verizon customer support this afternoon about the restarts problem. I have my HTC Incredible since July 13th and have noticed occasional unexpected restarts, up to 1 or 2 a day. It occurs chiefly in my office at work where reception is poor. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

The Verizon rep said in his experience, 95% of restarts are due to bad apps, since Verizon has nothing to do with certifying apps most of which come from the Android Market. He was not dismissive about it, acknowledging he's heard the complaint before, but would only associate it with bad appas and would not open a ticket about it.

Has anyone else heard this possibility? Reading the rest of this thread it sounds like a patch fix is coming from HTC, hopefully soon. I'd certainly prefer that answer than to blame it on apps. Sounds like the Windows blue screen of death on my new Incredible. I still love the smartphone though, just want to avoid these restarts which for me at this point are just a minor nuisance.

It's not bad apps (with the rare exception). People with entirely clean phones have the reboot problem. In my opinion, it's a bug in the OS interacting with certain towers in low signal areas. Point of Fact: My phone along with many others ONLY reboots in certain specific locations with low signal (e.g., at home or at the office). This is no coincidence. In addition, people have replaced their phone multiple times and had the same problem.

We don't know if the OTA update will fix this problem. We'll have to wait and see. The update is anticipated sometime in August. This is just a guess at this point.

Thanks Intrepid-NY. Like you described, my reboots occur most frequently at my office where signal strength is zero to weak. I hope HTC hears a lot about this and gets it fixed. As you read I already tried calling it in. If there's anything else writers to this group can do, please let us know.

At what point should the Incredible be restarted? It goes to sleep all the time, of course, but is it every necessary to do a hard restart occasionally, just to 'reset' or clean out things?

BTW, I've seen my Dinc do a random restart 2x, not sure what prompted that. Any ideas?

thanks!

I have been having a bunch of random reboots, and reboot cycles where the phone will be in a constant state of rebooting. I have uninstalled all of my non essential apps (per the direction of VZW CSR), and am still having the issue.

Its noted above that there could be an issue with relation to network signal, but is there any notion to the thought that it could be related to a heat issue. I have noticed that every time it reboots or gets stuck the phone is well above normal operating temperature. I have also had two occasions where on two separate days when the temps outside have been over 100*F that the phone gets stuck for hours, even after a battery pull and restart it still hangs.

Thoughts?

Experienced my first "random reboot" today. So disappointing as this phone was flawless beforehand :(

Has anyone tried the leaked 2.2 ROM along with the OTA to see if it fixes the random rebooting? I am preparing my phone for the update right now. I'll report back if it helps or not in a few days.

Just got a new Incredible from the local Verizon store about a week ago. Third day having the phone it randomly started turning off and then back on every so often. This has been happening more and more often to the point that it is every couple of hours now. I've installed several apps since day one, not sure if that has anything to do with it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Honestly mine was doing the EXACT same thing, then I installed the leaked Froyo and 2 days later not one reboot at all. No idea if you want to go that route, but it definitely worked for me.

Not quite sure what that means sorry. I have no clue what Froyo is. Was hoping for an easy fix.

I don't think I have the time or capabilities to do that haha thank you though. I'll wait for other suggestions, if that doesn't work I guess I'll return it.

It might be an app causing the problem. I haven't had a random reboot since I got the phone at the end of April, but it happened to me a couple times this past week. It's not happening now, though. I installed System Panel so I can keep an eye on apps that run out of control and cause problems. Since installing, my phone makes it through a work day on 60% of the battery. Prior to that, from time to time I'd be down to 30% before lunch time. There are definitely some apps out there that don't run cleanly all the time.

Since you've only had it a short while, you might consider doing a factory reset of the phone and see if it still does it. You can search for "random reboots" in the forum, you're definitely not the only one this happens to. There are a few suggestions in that thread you can consider as well. My phone was rebooting with increasing frequency about 2 weeks after I got it. I eventually did a factory reset a month ago and it hasn't done it since, so I must have had a bad app or messed with something I shouldn't have.

Would somebody be able to provide a link to one of these threads? I can't seem to find any. Thanks.

It has happened to me 3 times today, once when just sitting on my lap in my chair. after 2hrs sitting there i notice the lights come on, and it rebooted

anyhow, i have no idea how often this is happening. Are there any apps to track this?
