Help "Low on space" phone/application storage notification

Called verizon tonight and talk to the data dept. he had me reset my phone and then memory thing is now gone and everything works fine. I think I had a bad app...(astro) AND I think the ringtones that I had sent to my phone made it act up as well. when I went to the app killer thing just a bit ago it said 165mb of memory left....what does that mean? I have hardly used up ANY space on that phone tonight! Haven't downloaded any games, just useful apps!

You guys are confusing app storage space and RAM. When in ATK and you see the message for how much memory you have left thats for the RAM which is what programs use to run on your phone. If you kill all your apps that number will go up since nothing is running anymore.

App space is different and has nothing to do with your RAM.

Yea im also experiencing the same thing...and I cleared and closed almost everything. And the notification is still there. So I mean, is the only way is to factory reset?

This happened to me about a month ago, and I did like the poster above and just deleted all the sent emails and trash emails, and that worked for awhile, but yesterday it came back with a vengeance, couldn't get rid of the error message, couldn't delete anything else, kept getting force closes and wasn't receiving notifications.

So finally I moved my camera pictures to my PC, made sure my Appbrain was all in place and did a factory reset. So far, so good.

Not sure if I'm going to go the K-9 and Handcent route. Probably not just yet, but if it starts happening again, I will because obviously the native mail/messaging client is causing this....

Had this problem today...cleared Gmail and deleted my skyfire browser...all fixed.

....and I forgot how fast the stock browser was. I only used Skyfire cause it could play most Hulu videos, but with 2.2 coming out sometime in the near-ish future hopefully, that should work with Hulu hopefully.

I only use Skyfire for watching videos over at www.escapistmagazine.com . Other than that, it's useless and will be uninstalled when we get 2.2.

I encountered this same problem. However, I think it might be because I was in the middle updating an App (DroidEmuLite) when I realized that I didn't really even care to keep it. So, during the download I "Cancelled". Then, this message started popping up all the time. Or at least I think it might have happened at the same time. I'm really hoping so.

Anyway, I just re-installed the app and then uninstalled the app. I'm thinking that maybe that would over-write any un-finalized downloads.

Here's to thinking positively ;)

I have had the same issue. Don't have Google Earth downloaded (unless you mean the night sky map). Have hardly any apps on my phone actually. So , so far no one can tell me what's going on. What a bummer. Any more thoughts

To anyone that is interested now or perhaps searches and finds this thread in the future, it's been just over 24 hours and I've not seen the "No Space" notification one time, knock on wood.

I suppose my 'Install' and then 'Uninstall' did the trick to eliminate the partially downloaded file (I believe known as a Tombstone?).

Sigh, put me in the ranks of the low memory indicator phones. This is my second phone and has been great but now I have the low memory indicator.

I have cleared the cache, deleted my text messages, deteled the trash folder on email, and no help.

I have not installed any apps other than what came with the phone.

I have read all the threads, is there a solution short of a hard reset?

Double Sigh.

I've been getting the same message on my Incredible since yesterday, even though I have 600MB available. It hasn't prevented me from downloading/installing anything else, just an annoyance at this point...

On Sunday I started getting the message
"Low on space
Phone Storage space is getting low."
on the status bar.

When I tap it, I'm taken to the "Manage Applications" screen, so it's clear that the message refers to the "Phone Memory," where apps are stored.

But when I go to Settings > SD card & phone storage here's what I see:

SD Card Total Space: 14.83GB
SD Card Available Space: 6.15GB

Internal Phone Storage Total Space: 6.60GB
Internal Phone Storage Available Space: 6.51GB

Phone Memory Total Space: 748MB
Phone Memory Available Space: 332MB

I've googled looking for solutions and it's obvious that this is a fairly common problem - especially on HTC phones. But the only possible solutions I've found are:

  1. Too many apps are installed & space really is running low
  2. A "bad" app was recently installed causing this error
  3. Clear the cache for HTC Mail and HTC Message apps
  4. Perform a Factory Reset

  1. We can rule this out since there is more than 44% of the Phone Memory available.
  2. I didn't install any apps immediately before getting the message, but to be sure I uninstalled the 10 most recently added apps. No luck.
  3. I've gone to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications, but the cache for these apps is already zero. The "Data" for Mail is 2.22MB and for Messages is 812KB.
  4. This isn't fixing the problem, it's just a way to eliminate whatever condition has caused the symptom. But without an explanation of the actual problem I see no reason to think the problem won't come back in another two months.

And finally, yes, I've rebooted & pulled the battery. Oh, and I'm not rooted.

I've spent more than two months tweaking my Incredible getting it set up the way I want so I really don't want to wipe all of that out with a Factory Reset.

Any other ideas? Pleeeeeeease??

I've heard about this before. I think it's something to do with the built in HTC mail app. Are you using that? Try clearing out the folders or the cache for that. Make sure your trash folder is empty, and any emails you don't need, get rid of. Maybe set it to only hold a few days worth of messages. The only other thing is maybe you have a ton of texts messages?

Thanks for replying.

I don't use HTC's mail or messaging app. I use GMail's app for email and Handcent for msgs.

As I said in my OP, the caches for HTC's apps were already zero when I looked at them. I checked Data and Cache for Handcent and Gmail, but they're not high, either.

I'll check the number of text messages. I don't typically delete them so maybe that's it.

But I'm still stuck on the fact that the phone reports so much free space yet it gives me this message.

I cleared all of the files in email SENT and TRASH folders, then trashed all of my text messages and it was OK for two weeks before I had to do it again. Tons of room on my SD card and phone memory. I hope this bug will be fixed when we get the phones upgraded to 2.2. Speaking to a Verizon tech is like talking to a Radio Shack store manager. Resetting your phone should never be an option.

I had the same problem. Lots a space everywhere, but the HTC mail application was using 125MB. At that point "low space" alerts, downloads stopped. Deleting mail & account did not fix. reset phone fixed it. HTC responce was don't use for mail... Not a great answer.

It is NOT an HTC mail problem. I've never used HTC mail and have this issue come up all the time. I refuse to hard reset though. HTC needs to fix it.

My theory is that the usage reading is inaccurate, rather than the notification being inaccurate.

This is NOT just an HTC problem, it was also a very common problem on the Moto Droid and I have heard of it on plently of other phones. Which leads me to believe that it must be an Android problem.

On my friends Moto Droid she was finally able to track the problem down to two things. The main one was the mail apps, it wasn't deleting her trash. Both her GMail and stock mail were saving everything. The second "lesser" problem was her internet history, deleting that helped.

Once she did those two things about 4 months ago, it has never happened again.

First post for me w00t, joined just to say this.

I got the error a week or so, after some googling I felt doomed.
To get info I called HTC and got really good customer service, but was told the only thing that /might/ cure it was the hard reset. But he recommended if I was going to do that I should just use my insurance to get a new phone.
Giving up I went to verizon and the guy looked at me really funny, took my phone to the back and came out 20 min later with my phone exactly how I gave it to him, minus the error.
He didn't tell me what he did, but I didn't argue cause I was happy.
So there is a relatively easy fix apprently that requires no resetting or such.
Sorry it was long and/or old news.

I think I've heard of this error somewhere before, but I couldn't find it. I just started getting a notification that says 'Low on space: Phone Storage space is getting low'

Is there any definite way to fix this or is it still a problem?
