Help "Low on space" phone/application storage notification

I was having this same problem. It got so bad that when i tried to type a text, no matter what letter I pushed only Q would be inputed. I contacted HTC and this is the response I got:

Hi, I'm Victor, and I will be glad to assist you today. I do apologize that you have this issue with your device. You can try by clearing the cache out of your browser by the following in the Browser press Menu > More > Settings > Clear cache, Clear history, Clear all cookie data, and Clear form data. You may also want to delete some of the messages you have saved on the device as well. If this does not resolve the issue then you may want to soft reset your device by pulling the battery out for a few seconds and then rebooting your device. If none of this resolves the issue then you will need to hard reset your device to resolve the issue. Hard resetting your device will clear off your device and reset it back to factory settings. You can hard reset your device the following way. 1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button. 2. Wait for the screen with the 3 Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button. 3. Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE, and then press POWER. 4. When asked to confirm, press VOLUME UP. At this time we have no other fix to help resolve this issue besides hard resetting the device. At this time we have no information on when an update will be released to help resolve this issue. When an update is released you will get a notification on your device that an update is available for your device. If you have any other questions feel free to reply. I have run into this issue now 3 times (low on space message) and now my Gmail is locked up where I cannot send or receive emails. It also drops WiFi when I am standing right next to the router and I have to perform a factory setting reset again.

This is f**king ridiculous. I wouldn't care if the free apps were automatically saved in my profile but having to reload them is BS. For a phone named "Incredible" the only thing Incredible is how much of a pain in the ass it is. I just may sell it and get a new Motorola next month because to have to backup, hard rest and re-download everything each month is bull**it.
 
A friend is having this problem on a recurring basis with his Incredible. For him, the only solution has been a hard reset but that requires him to start from scratch with setting up the phone, and this is only a temporary fix until the "low on space" notification returns. He's past his 30-day return window and feels like all is lost.

Solutions on the web seem sketchy at best, but most seem to suggest a problem with how HTC's stock mail and messaging apps cache data. Is this a known bug, how widespread is it, and does anyone know of a definite fix for this issue?

Sure wish SOMEONE knew! I too have PLENTY of space on my Incredible, but with the error "Low On Space" in the notification panel, I can no longer download any apps from the Market. And I'm NOT going to keep resetting my phone...so I'm left with a phone that I had LOVED up until this point...but now am left to ponder losing a few hundred bucks to say goodbye to the Inc and get the next Motorola...bums me out!

HTC is utterly useless for help with their devices. Seriously, they could hire ONE employee to browse the various forums and reply with help...THAT would be customer service!
 
I understand that the "Not Enough storage space" / "not enough space for sms/mms" messages are quite ubiquitous on HTC phones (and from what I read, the culprit seems to be HTC Mail and its aggressive storage policies).

My issue is that I have very little space actually used, and I'm getting these notices.

Phone Memory:
Total Space: 748MB
Available Space: 645MB

Internal Phone Storage:
Total Space: 6.60GB
Available Space: 6.39 GB

SD Card:
Total Space:7.40GB
Available Space: 4.47GB

I really don't want to hard reset, because it took me a while to get my phone exactly as I like it (not to mention, I have it rooted). Any ideas as to what is going on?
 
This likely isn't what you want to hear, but my friend wound up doing (another) hard reset, but then immediately installed K-9 and Handcent for email and messaging. That was two weeks ago and he claims all is good (for now).
 
Mines doing it too. It's messing with my syncing of my Gmail too.

I use the Gmail app, not the Mail app. And I don't use K-9 or Handcent. I can go in and manually clear out the data for the HTC apps and the notification WILL go away for less than 20 mins, then it pops right back up and my Gmail will won't auto sync or even sync when I manually make it.

I'm ready to backup my apps with Astro and backup contacts and reset it.

As soon as the Droid X comes out, I plan on bitching to Verizon to try to upgrade.
 
I just posted this on another forum..but I figured I would look to see other forums this information would be helpful. I've had this issue and think I've got it figured out..so Ive been through this headache..

I've had the Incredible for about a month and have had this error pop up constantly. After calling Verizon and HTC, just as other people found out, the only solution is hard reset. And I agree -that isn't a solution. So before I did that, I did some research--googling..and found a ton of people that have this same issue and a couple suggestions that have worked for me so far. I have to keep doing it, but I'll take this quick less than 2 minutes solution rather than a hard reset all the time.

Someone suggested going to your settings/manage applications and clear the cache and data of some things. The major ones for me are:
City ID (even though I don't use it)
Facebook (though once you shut it off, it doesn't seem to need to be dealt with later)
Gmail (though I don't use this or the storage)
Gmail Storage
Visual Voicemail (that I also don't use)

Also, I had a Facebook widget open originally and that seemed to cause me and other people issues with that storage message as well so I removed that.
Now I agree that this sucks that we have to deal with any of this..and I'm not a Facebook junkie, but it was kind of nice to have as a widget for when I got bored and wanted to see what friends were up to--since I had it as an app. But to save me the headache, I just removed that.
Those seems to have fixed my problem..so hopefully that fixes anyone else's.
HTC and Verizon should really check into their own issues though..because these are common problems..they should be able to suggest these as better possible solutions. Not leave it up to us to google it-after being given a horrible answer.
 
I had this problem too. I deleted all my deleted emails and sent mail. The notification went away and knock on wood - hasn't been back since.
 
I have been having the same problem for a few days now. After using the phone for a few hours, I will get that notificaiton. I went to HTC's website and reported it to them. I suggest everyone here do the same. Maybe if we flood them with complaints about it something will get done.
 
I have encountered "out of space" messages several times on my HTC Incredible. In almost every instance, it followed the installation of a non-conventional application, such as several 'ported' wallpapers from the Droid X via xda forum, or beta's such as Shapewriter (which is still able to be found online, but the publisher has pulled).

Immediately removing the offending application always cleared the message, even without requiring a phone reboot.

I see the threads about HTC's email app and alleged "memory leaks", and I've varied whether I put "all" email or just some on the phone, but I haven't found a direct correlation.

Incidentally, lots of people, maybe even most people, keep literally thousands of email messages in their "inbox." That's not a particularly good idea, and is probably the source of lots of synchronization issues.

I try to keep my actual inbox as small as possible. I had it down to only 50 messages, and now have it hovering at just under 300, but I rarely ever have even as many as 400 messages in there. That's what the folder structure is for --- to get things out of the inbox. (I also save important emails to a separate program we use here at the firm, so they're out of Outlook altogether).

In any event, hopefully Froyo will solve a lot of these issues by permitting lots of storage now in RAM to be cached on the SD card.

All I did was delete the over 1000 text messages that I have and the notification went away. Give that a shot and see what happens! My phone has been rooted just as an fyi but I didn't do anything special other than delete the text messages.
 
HTC mail client does seem to be the problem with the false notification. Check your sent items and other folders for your HTC Mail accounts and delete stuff you dont need.

If you go to "applications" and arrange by size the email client might be at the top. Mine was at 48 MBs so i went and deleted a bunch of sent items. That got it down to 24 MBs and the low space message is gone
 
Um . . . WTH is up with this? It's on my phone as well. I've never done a hard reset, what happens when I do that? It sounds like I will lose everything. Does that include Apps I've downloaded? That will FULLY piss me off. Anyone that has done that before please tell me what happens and what to do to make sure I don't have to reinstall everything.

Invest in sprite backup from the app store. It will backup everything. However I used it only for texts/mms/call history. I then used astro to backup my apps to my sd card and then did a hard reset. Reverse the process to get everything back. It wasn't too bad, but this bug really needs to be fixed.

I too am having this problem. I've wiped all cache, killed all tasks, have one widget, still... This also instantly happens if I use a live wallpaper.
 
Had the same problem - tech at the Verizon store said I had too many programs (though I had less than the week before when all was fine.) He would not budge from that opinion. Manager took over - backed up apps to the sd card, did a hard reset, and brought back my contacts. It took me about two days to reload all the apps and arrange the screens, but have not had the problem again.
 
I have had this problem 4 times now and I refuse to deal with it anymore. I am about to put this thing on Craig's List. I have only stock apps except for systempanel, homerunbattle 3d and AppBrain. My email inbox is about 350 emails and 0 in sent and 0 in trash. I have about 85-90% (probably more) of original storage available. No reason for this to happen and never happened with Droid (leaving me to think it's Sense).

They probably told you that so they didn't have to give you a new phone or go through anymore troubleshooting because it could be because of a thousand different variables.

I too believe that it's a problem with Sense.

I did a factory reset and reprogrammed my phone and manually went in and redownloaded all of my apps that I had before, and it's been fine for 2 or 3 weeks since. Fingers crossed!
 
I have been getting the same notification. I simply refuse to do a hard reset. The only solution I have found is to delete some of my saved text message threads. I use Handcent as my messaging app. As soon as I delete the majority of my texts and turn the phone off...when I turn my Incredible back on the notification is gone. It usually will return after a couple of weeks. I then repeat the process. It's a temporary solution, but beats the heck out of erasing everything on the phone and starting from scratch.
 
As a followup to my previous post in this thread, my friend has not had this problem since his last hard reset and install of Handcent (messaging) and K-9 (mail) apps. He seems to think the latter has made the difference this time and although he is not overly fond of K-9 for mail, he likes not having to worry about "out of space" issues. Note that he is NOT using ANY of the default Sense apps for email and messaging. He IS one of those guys that has hundreds of emails in his inbox. ;)
