Root Any reason to root anymore?

Hey guys I have had my N1 since it came out and still love it! I had a question on rooting and if its worth doing, it seems with froyo and app launcher Pro combo its running pretty slick and smooth, the only reason I even considered rooting once upon a time was for the speed increase on home screen scrolling, so my question is what else really would I get out of rooting, over clocking doesn't seem like it would make a big difference really not enough to root over. Is it safe to say most people are not wanting to root as much anymore because of these changes?
 
Only reason I'd want to root is that the Froyo Apps2SD is nothing how I thought when Google announced it (thought it was how you move apps2SD with root). So I only have 6 out of my 100 apps that I was able to move to the SD which freed me up...umm../..8mb >_>; Hopefully now that there are more phones with Froyo, more developers will enable apps2SD for their apps...if it continues at this pace, I'll definitely run out of space :<

Some things I like about root: Black notification bar, you can have can have a % in the battery indicator...you can use the Shootme app to take screenshot of your phone and some other gimicky things.
 
Rooting gave me two main things:

1. Trackball wake and unlock

2. Fixed volume being lowered when using the N1 with the official Car Dock.

Other than that, I think the Enomther ROM increased my battery life.
 
Overclocked, undervolted kernel and SetCPU to conserve battery life?
Still havn't rooted myself but these things still have me leaning over the edge...
Battery life is still about the only problem I have with this phone ;)
 
plenty of reasons to root. get rid of horrible white notification bar, black is much better. add the 720p video recording. cyanogen ROM and all the other options with it. ROM manager. NAND backups. the list is endless:D.
 
you're missing out if you don't flash roms and kernels, metamorph... all that stuff.
I have a stock 2.2 n1 also with nothing on it. It's lame compared to the one I use everyday.
And on a serious note, there are too many fixes for random stuff out there to not root it.
Someone mentioned the video thing, I'd also add the audio thing, the himem thing, wifi driver thing, Titanium backup, trackball alert, rom manager... you get the idea. It's just so much better.
 
Reasons I rooted:

1. Got rid of the ugly, white notification bar. I like it there, I just don't like the color and I don't want burn-in (I have a friend with this problem).
2. Custom ROMs each with unique styles and features.
3. Custom kernels overall optimized for better performance and battery life.
4. Ability to remove the crappy stock applications.
5. Ability to more easily customize pretty much anything, including any app.
6. Custom boot animations.
7. In line with #2, using bits and pieces of various ROMs for a unique interface that suits your liking.

I'm sure others could add to the list. It's definitely worth it; you get a lot more control over your phone.

If you can follow instructions, it's very easy to do and there's little risk of bricking your phone.
 
Oh, and the NUMBER ONE reason to root (besides what everyone else said)...

YOU CAN UNINSTALL AMAZON MP3!!!!! :p
 
I love amazon mp3... I don't love the fact I can't buy anything because of international crap rules... :D
 
Anyway custom roms bring soo much to the nexus and other phones that you just have to root... because you have to see them :D

anyway would be a good laugh if Google actualy adopted some of the custom mods as their own and officialy put it on the nexus via OTA :D it would be out of their hands they would help with development etc but it would be a joint mission to build the best ROM ever :D

One reason why I feel I shouldn't root :( I'm a total air head when it comes to computer instructions, lol. I have enough horror stories with tech supports telling me to do simple things at least half a dozen times before I got what they were telling me -_-; So I feel more likely then not, I'll do something idiotic if I root!

Honestly Roze, it really is easy if you use the latest method. It's just pushing files to your phone and running a couple scripts. :D Even without installing a custom ROM, with ROOT, you can at least uninstall stuff you don't want. :D

I don't get the hate for the amazon app. I actually buy all my music thru the amazon app on my nexus. We need to support drm free music that can be used on any device we own!

I'm not saying it's bad.. It's just utterly, utterly useless for quite some people. I can't even open the damn thing because I'm not from the US. Same for GV..
Useless apps for me, taking up my precious app space.
F this, I'm rooting.

Installing Java SDK now :p

For me, it's the principal of it. I get my music through other sources, as I actively boycott anything Amazon... I hate that I have no option to remove it and it just sits there taking up CPU and space.

Just to be fair though, I would rather use Amazon or drill out my ears than using Apple's iTunes Virus on my PC. :D

I also don't see any value in Google Goggles and the Twitter app. Since rooting, I have removed both of those and have reclaimed the wasted space they used to occupy. :D
 
Yeah, after rooting I first and foremost got rid of the amazon apk, maybe I'll get rid of goggles as well, seeing as I've only used it once to test it's novelty :p
How did you delete those btw? I just searched for the first superuser file explorer and deleted the amazon.apk in /system/apps

Btw, I used the same method as you to root, went pretty smooth. But after using it for a while my phone seemed to get sluggish and slow and especially wifi seemed really buggged.
I tought it had something to do with hooking onto the wifi adapter to push those files, but it was only after an hour or so I noticed the back bottom of my phone was quite hot, even when he should've been sleeping. But my battery temp was normal...
Apparently that's where the processor is, so it seems. Because I checked and my processor had been throttling at 99-100% non-stop O_O
I pretty much freaked out, thinking I broke my phone, especially because it was getting more and more unresponsive and there wasn't a single app or system process that seemed the culprit.

But then I rebooted.

All is peaceful now.

I seem to have more free ram now, I check it occasionally. Don't know why, a system ram partition that is now available as free ram?

Any other protips for a newb rooter? Would I benefit from setCPU? Becaue my cpu never seems to go over 3% in sleep anyway (and it almost never spikes up anyway).

EDIT: Oops, noticed I'm kinda hijacking the thread and whatnot.. But since we're going there anyway, another offtopic question:
Why do you actually hate amazon that much? :p
 
I can't think of a single thing I would want from rooting. I can think of a reason why I would NOT want to root: potentially voiding my warranty (Of course some people have said HTC still sometimes honors the warranty even with an unlocked bootloader but I am much too paranoid to place my faith on a customer service warranty rep honoring my warranty: how do I know I wont somehow get the bad luck of the draw and get an HTC rep having a bad day that voids my warranty? Thats too big of a risk for me to take)

- Getting rid of notification bar? I use ADW launcher to hide it without rooting
- Better battery life? I traded my iPhone 3gs for a Nexus One so that I can use a spare battery to last all day. Why would I potentially void my warranty when I can easily carry around a tiny spare battery?
- Tethering? I get this already with Froyo / PDAnet without rooting
- More speed? The Nexus One is plenty fast already and I dont need any more speed
- Getting rid of useless stock applications? I always have 75% of my phone memory free so I don't have issues having stock apps on the phone.

You should always reboot after rooting, no matter what method you use - especially as the process also frees up memory......
SetCPU is great, as you tell it to ramp down the CPU frequency when in standby..

And just to contribute to this thread, root allows you to customise your phone as much as you want.

Scam artists. They bait you to their site with unheard of low prices just to jack you for shipping. When I go to a site to get a deal on an item and get jacked this way, bad business.

Example:

Item (any really)
Retail Cost: $10
Amazon Cost: $2.99

Sounds like a great deal right?

Then they smack you with ultra high shipping: $5.99

I mean, when the shipping is TWICE (and sometimes HIGHER than that) the cost of the item, what is the value?

There have some items where they marked it for sale at $0.99 and then charged you $7.99 shipping!! WTF.

Especially when I can go to other sites and pay LESS for items from Amazon and get free shipping.

Just not worth it.

I can understand and respect what you are saying here. There are other ways of getting things done, but everyone has different uses for their phones.... :D

With the newest rooting method, you don't have to unlock the boot loader, so no obvious warranty voids now. :D

Lol Amazon has loads of different sellers, you have to check the postage. I use amazon uk for most things i buy on net and most of the time i get free delivery......

O and i love Cyanogen mod and sooo bloody glad i rooted. My wife is so much happier wit the red effect at night while i fiddle with my Nex. (Thats after fiddling with her of course ;)
 
Question... If you root and then unroot, do the things you did while rooted still take effect? such as removing the stock apps? Like if I wanted to go back to stock rom to recieve and update?

Unrooting won't bring back the bloadware, but receiving the OTA probably will.
