The little things...(2.2 Update addons/changes)

Received 2.2 OTA this morning, now everytime I open my Gmail it automatically opens the first message in the list, this didn't happen on 2.1 and I don't see a setting for this. Anyone else notice this or know how to make Gmail open to my list of emails instead of opening the first email in the list?

is this when you open GMAIL icon off the app list/homescreen or when you press it from the notification bar?

for me the icon shows the list and the notification bar opens up an email straight

Guess I spoke too soon. I was checking out the lockscreen pause/play feature, and my stock music wouldn't close. Had to reboot. Hope this isn't an issue.

It was when I opened the app from the homescreen. Just realized though that I'm using the Gmail Unread Count widget and that if I use the actual Gmail app it opens to the list of emails. Guess it's just an issue with the widget.

So I got froyo last night ota and I want my old phone back! All there is is lag lag lag lag. And 720p lol. Is this happening for anyone else? This seriously gets to me because I was so pumped for an update that made an already fast phone faster. now I'm lagging as I type...as I pinch to zoom...as i scroll. What can I do and is this happening to anyone else?

There are several reports of the OTA causing lag on phones and the only solution has been a factory reset.

Most have been saying that there is a night and day difference. Let me know if you need to know how to do it.

hmmm my HTC Peep (twitter) isnt working, not letting me sign on. Odd

I'm having a problem with Peep too. I changed my username on Twitter, and now Peep is not letting me sign in. The Android Twitter app is working fine with the new username, as is every other Twitter program I use.

If you would be so kind sir! My contacts are backed up with backup assistant and I don't give a shite about my app s I have none paid so I can simply redownload them. I just wanna experience the froyo I've been waiting for :(

Umm...have any of you used Pandora today? I usually listen to it towards the end of my work day and it has been HORRIBLE! Skippy and bad audio quality where it used to be great. What in the heck happened? I am going to leave in about an hour and will listen again during my commute home and hope that this is an isolated event.

I listen to Pandora all the time and if it keeps acting up like this I am going to freak. It used to work great at my desk (before the OTA this morning to Froyo).

Any other people experiencing this?

Is anyone having an issue with the music apps not closing, and if so is there a solution? I guess a hard reset (battery pull) might work. I powered the phone down to reboot, and the issue remains. I have system panel, and that's not working...

I noticed the widget wouldn't load after the update

NOTE: Yes, I just noticed that my text editor felt like chopping up sentences and am fixing it...with a post this big, it'll take me a few mins:) Sorry for the inconvenience. ( I had to save to a text because I have been having computer problems lately that I am still tracking down. )

Sorry for the epic post, just saw a lot of stuff since my last post that I felt still needed answering, or some clarification on things. If I didn't reply to a question you asked, sorry but I don't have an answer ATT, hopefully someone else will! Cheers, and let the post begin:

anyone else notice that you can't kill advanced task killer when it's checked? it stays open now....wtf

I noticed this with Astro vs. killing Astro. I think they changed it so processes can not kill themselves. ( Which makes sense, I can see that as fairly messy. Just exit like normal...or better yet, don't use atk! )

No, the keyboard stayed the same as far as I can tell after having the OTA from the day it started getting pushed. That review was an earlier review of the RUU, not the OTA, so it was wrong.

Actually it was an older leak. The RUU is the same as the OTA except that it does a clean wipe.

The 2.2 OTA they pushed to the Incredible did not remove the button that hides the keyboard (which I'm happy about, because I use that button a lot).

To answer the question one page back about one of the guys mentioning a bunch of different updates who claimed the lock screen and world clock show the exact battery percentage, I had the same question, that guy was wrong to. His post is like 2 pages back I think, but he was mistaken or mistyped meaning something else, neither of those screens show any battery percentage, you still need to download an app to see battery percentage at all. (which is stupid, this should be integrated into every version of android / sense / whatever, no arguments, it's useful and should be on every phone stock, but it's not)

They do have a percentage listed, it is just buried. ( Technically, other apps don't display their own percentage, they just ask Android what percentage it has listed. ) It was something like #*#*4636*#*# then you can get all sorts of battery history details. I might have something wrong in the number, can't verify it atm. This is where the apps get all of their information btw: Partial wake usage, history, the works.

As for Flash, I think if you have 2.2 it should just work automatically, you shouldn't have to download any update. I can confirm that it works automatically on my Incredible after the OTA, because I sometimes read news updates from motogp.com on my phone and I used to not be able to view the videos on there due to no flash with 2.1, but after the OTA all of the videos on motogp.com are working.

Correct, flash 10.1 comes pre-loaded and is at least currently up to date. Anything that lists an update to it is just bugged atm.

Small changes I noticed but not mentioned, they updated the shortcut buttons to turn on / off wifi, airplane mode, mobile, bluetooth, and gps. They just made them look a little different, cooler IMO. Also they added a few more of those settings shortcut buttons... Sync All, Ringtone, Profile, and I think maybe one more. Nice additions, but doesnt the phone sync regularly anyway?

Not sure entirely what you mean by "doesn't the phone sync regularly anyways?" : Theres a lot of different syncs and intervals for them. I believe the "Sync All" is to do a forced immediate sync instead of having to open up the settings, etc. Some people set some of the syncs up to 2 hours. Then, they can just hit this button when they want to check on things right now.

Oh also, just another confirmation for those asking, yes you still need to bump charge to get a REAL full charge. This was not fixed, and I'm not sure if they can fix it. Signal seems the same to me as far as call quality / service goes. Which in my opinion has never been quite as good as any other phone I've had on Verizon, but whatever, I still love the phone.

I've actually found the Inc to have (slightly) better actual reception than other phones. When I went to PA with a friend and his family, they kept telling me about a 3 hour stretch of road where I wouldn't get signal ( they're all on VZW too, each with a different phone. )... I only lost signal for a total of about 15 mins broken into 3 spots of around 5 mins each. On a day to day basis though, theres no real noticeable difference from what I can tell.

The charging thing still seems to be there. I find the best way to charge to get full life is with all data off

absolutely anything to reduce the power usage while the phone is off will allow for a greater charge in just the same way as not having the phone on. Putting the phone into airplane mode should do a fair bit for those that just need an alarm.

Got my OTA update this morning. LauncherPro seems to be snappier. Another thing I noticed is that scrolling around in webpages (stock Internet) is a bit slower--not choppy or anything--just a tad slower with the same thumb swiping. It feels like I have to move my thumb a little faster to get the same speed as before. Could be imaging things but that's the "little thing" I noticed. Not a big deal at all. Overall a very nice update. Truth is, with all the anticipation it doesn't seem like that major of an update. Not really going to change any of my habits or expectations with the phone. Perhaps with time the other goodies will come in handy.

It is really recommended ( as much of a pain as it is ) that you factory reset your phone now. It should fix the browser issue, and who knows what other problems you have yet to find. It is much the same as going from Vista to Windows 7: There are bound to be incompatibilities, and they will likely only get worse over time. The threads about the RUU can help with backups to make it a little less painful.

So, its official then: the battery bump charge issue is a physical hardware limitation and not something any software can fix.

That one is still unknown. It depends on what is going on with the Bump Charge. Off-Charge however is indeed a physical limitation of Lithium-Ion and charging inside a device that requires power.

does everyone else still have the HTC Calendar widget? Mine is gone now...i did the update.zip, not ruu or ota.
Edit: not that i used them, but there were some add'l photo widgets that are now gone too.

Still there on the RUU. You sure you didn't nab a version that had some of the "bloat" removed? Also, sure you did everything?

I was planning on purchasing the full version of either EasyTether or PDAnet for full tethering capabilities, but have a question before I pull the trigger --Can anyone with the official 2.2/froyo OTA update conclusively confirm or deny that these apps still work?I'd really like an answer from someone that either received the OTA pushed to their phone, or manually installed the most recent "leaked" update to 2.2.I am ready to pay the ~$10-20 for a tethering app, however I don't want to waste my money if it isn't compatible once I get my 2.2 update pushed to my phone OTA.Thanks and I appreciate your input!

Do you need HTTPS ? That is the only difference between PDAnet light and advanced.

Nice update, maybe hyped up a bit much.A couple gripes I got, maybe its just but if anyone has similar issues some input would be awesome. It's cool that you can get in landscape whether you turn the phone clockwise or counterclockwise, but it seems that every time I open an app (mostly noticeable on Handcent and my browser) it automatically goes into landscape even though my phone is upright. I give it a little shake to revert it back to normal.

Try recalibrating.

Battery does seem to drain a little quicker, but maybe its just me toying with the thing likes its a brand new phone. But i did notice that an actual phone call is what drained my battery the quickest. It wasn't that way on 2.1

? I have always found phone calls are a huge drain. Though, this will vary a lot based on the signal where you are calling from.

My Beautiful Widgets keeps force closing. Also no that way on 2.1. Since the upgrade I can't "save and apply" without it freezing, so currently I have no clock on my phone.

Can you uninstall then reinstall beautiful widgets? In fact, did you use either the RUU or do a wipe? There are bound to be incompatibilities and you should really strongly consider it.

The new boot animation is cool, but it kinda pauses when on the "eye." I always think its frozen, but eventually gets going. That said, seems like it takes a little longer to boot up.

I think it just seems like longer due to the pause of the eye. I think they did this because any animation that goes through that point where things are loading tends to look very choppy. Rather than have a stuttering and choppy animation, they just stopped it there.

I forgot how to calibrate my keyboard. Either I forgot where to find the option or it was taken out all together.....I think that's everything for now. The good: it is snappier and quicker. Flash is working good! The settings/Manage apps layout is nice. Neat new graphics for incoming calls. Awesome Boot animation. Getting great speeds, consistently around 1000, where 2.1 was at 500. I like 720p recording, although I probably don't have enough storage to do much of that. And last but not least, you don't know how much I appreciate the flashlight. The little things. Still dinking around with it, I'll see if I notice anything else, or if my issues fix themselves.

That score of "consistently around 1000" seems a little behind. You should be seeing in the 1150-1200 range on the first run, and 1250-1400 or so on consecutive runs. That's not a huge diff, but it could be worth looking into ( and perhaps also remedied with a factory reset. )

I never used the stock music before 2.2, but were you able to pause or skip the song from the unlock screen before?

Yes, you were. Pretty nice feature:)

battery heat: my battery gets super hot real quick lately. will go from idle like 29 degrees C, and after 5-10 min of use, shoots up to 39 and is very warm. never happened with 2.1. only new app is chrome to phone. all the bloatware keeps loading, so im wondering if that garbage loading on there is using the batt so much that its making it warm before i can task kill it also, my HTZC weather app isn't showing my town, it's saying "current location" when it ALWAYS showed the town. any thoughts?

It's more likely your killing it is what is causing any issue. They will happily go into the background and stop using resources like good little apps if you ignore them. If you still have problems with it heating up you will want to look more into it. It takes a serious drain to warm the battery up ( Though charging does a good job of warming it up. )

Also: Have you done a factory reset? If not, it is possible something you have from 2.1 is not cooperating with 2.2 causing a problem.

Yes - I have heard and read that many time. And yet - if I ignore them I find my battery gets sucked down in a matter of hours. If I kill them, my battery lasts 2 days with normal use. So - I'll stick with killing apps. What I have done is idendtify the small handful of apps that I want to let run (or I have figured out must not be killed) and let them run, killing everything else. Seems like a nice balance right now.

Yes! I saw this too. If anyone discovers a way to set these apps to not auto start - please post it here.

You really would be much better off finding the cause of the problem and fixing it. Sure, Task Killing a major hog might help battery performance...but not having a major hog in the first place is a much better solution. The "bloat" apps should be added to your "do not kill" list though for 2 reasons: First they ARE properly coded and do not eat your resources, so task killing them will actually be worse than ignoring them. Second, since they restart almost immediately anyways, killing them does nothing.

i think the only way is to root guys.....ugh. absolutely ridiculous; i think this is why my awake time is so damn high. i have my ATK set to auto kill every 30 minutes now. my awake time is so high due to skype mobile (i deleted it off 2.1 because i realized it was giving me 100% awake time, and now they FORCE it on us? wow)

Yes...surely it is the programs sitting in the background not doing anything that is causing problems, and not the task killer going berserk every 30 mins.

Don't get me wrong, I hate bloat as much as anyone...but blaming them for something elses problem will still leave you with the problem. Remove ATK ( if you need to kill A, as in one, task...you can do it with stock android. In Applications you can manage processes, services, etc. Also, Astro which is fairly required, has a process manager in it's tools. ) , then you can begin looking for any other trouble makers to deal with. There are several known apps that just are not coded properly and will eat your battery.

I didn't have time to read all the posts here so if this is a dup then forgive me.The 2.2 update appears to fix the screen grounding flaw!!!! Not that it was a major issue but I'm surprised a software fix worked.

There was never a grounding flaw. There was something else that rarely would cause erroneous clicks/etc. or not register an individuals clicks. As you mention, a grounding flaw would not be fixed by a software patch ( and also would have been far more universal, likely causing a recall. ) Regardless, I'm glad it is fixed for you now:)

IIdis anyone else having trouble with flashplayer 10.1? For whatever reason I'm being told that I don't have it installed, but its obviously installed and can be found in my application list under settings. Is there something i need to do to activate it? I just updated manually...

What exactly is telling you you do not have flash installed? Some sites still don't play nice ( Hulu has been mentioned a few times. ) Also, which manual update did you use? RUU, or update.zip?

Sorry, but you need to factory reset. ( It should reset you to 2.2 factory settings. ) I know, it's a pain...but some things from 2.1 just don't work well with 2.2 and a clean wipe will fix these.

If you would be so kind sir! My contacts are backed up with backup assistant and I don't give a shite about my app s I have none paid so I can simply redownload them. I just wanna experience the froyo I've been waiting for :(

No problem pal!!

Setting -> SD&Phone Storage
Scroll to the bottom and choose Factory Data Reset!
It will give you two options, "Reset Phone" or "Reset Phone & Internal Storage", I would try just "Reset Phone"

Good Luck!!

My question wasn't so much about the difference, but rather if the full version supports 2.2 on the Incredible. I wanted to purchase it now (while still on 2.1) and not have it rendered useless (and thus wasting the $20) once my OTA update comes through.

So far everything has been great with 2.2, speed etc.

My two complaints are these: when listening to the stock music player and using either GPS turn by turn or doing a voice search, or anything that involves audio input/output (except for phone calls), the music player will not resume. I have to go into the app and hit play again. Very annoying and made me switch to mixzing (which i don't like as much as the stock music app).

Another thing is after I installed handscent and set as my default text message app, i still get a double notification from the stock text app. I know there was a way to fix this in 2.1 but haven't found the way to do it here. Anyone know?

I guess apart from that what has been widely mentioned is the default internet browser is a lot slower for scrolling, may have to switch to a different browser.

Sorry, I noticed someone else had already mentioned that yes, PDAnet works with 2.2 and just wanted to add the part about you possibly not needing to pay any money at all for it. I probably should have been a little clearer about that:)

PS: Just like the other person, I am currently typing this out from my computer that is tethered to my phone using PDAnet:)

what a dissapointment. the quality is absolutely terrible; it's grainy, looks compressed, colors are all messed up. and here i thought i was gonna be super excited for 720p video! sigh. lol anyone else feel the same?

I heard that its doesnt playback the video in 720p on your phone. You have to move the file to a pc. Something about compressing the file or something. am I wrong?

Uh oh thats not good to hear. I was looking forward this feature the most. Wish I had the update to see for myself

Thanks - I don't know what happened in most of this thread, I was merged here this afternoon ;)
