Root Forget sense

Jaffa

Android Expert
Froyo has landscape home screens, Ill live without sense, 1.4.4 is epic so far, flashed this an hour ago, checking battery life!!

Seconded, LauncherPro+ does pretty much everything sense does and more, and faster, and smoother.

Only thing i've noticed missing so far is a decent phone dialler - the stock android one is terrible.

Thirded (if that's a word). Fast smooth ROM. I noticed on the Villain boards that someone had recommended NubDial, it works a treat :)

A couple of screen shots of how similar it is (running 'Beautiful Widgits' too):

Launcher is great, I love he fact that I can hide the status bar, it makes the screen feel bigger :-)

I totally love this ROM as well as it's superior speed, but have ended up going back to 2.1 with sense - I think the contacts app is the real weak area of vanilla android and I missed the level of facebook integration of sense as well as the slickness of the widgets - for example using the beautiful people widget in Froyd, the facebook photos don't show up even though you can see them in the contacts app.

I agree there are some compramises to be made running un sensed, Im not a massive facebook user, the speed makes al the difference for me, hopefully a sense version will appear soon.

Going back to speed though on VR12 my linpack was 2.8, its now 4.8, thats impressive from the same hardware!!

I know what you mean - this ROM needs no benchmarking as it is so noticably faster - it's just every time I use it , after a day or so I start to miss the tighter integration of sense and go back. In fact for the last week I've switched back 4 or 5 times and still can't settle on which way to go!

Heads or tails?

I've never used nandroid more than in the last week! - I think if the contact app could be improved then that would win me over completely. I do advise anyone with a rooted 2.1 Hero to try Froyd because for many this would not be an issue and most other things are sweet!

Is there not a third party app that works better?
Someone on the Villain site is developing an iPhone style contacts app, but it is still very much developmental - I'm not aware of anything else. The native contacts app does sync with facebook photos ok but this isn't carried over to other apps - (for example the beautiful peoples widget) and this affects the look of the homescreen significantly for me. The only way around this is to make contact shortcuts instead as the photos show up in these - still doesn't look as good as sense though.
I accept that this isn't a major problem and doesn't affect functionality, but it is enough to niggle me and make me crave for sense!

I find the Launcher Pro people App is near enough the same as the Sense People App. Shows Facebook photos no problem.

That's strange as I have all my photos up to date linked in contacts but they don't show on the launcher pro people widget (I mistakenly called it "beautiful people widget) - this has also been discussed in the Villain forum.
EDIT: I do get some photos displaying, but these are the non-facebook linked contacts that have had photos directly linked previously.

I use SyncMyPix to sync all my facebook contacts.

It's great, but for some reason it likes to give pictures to gtalk contacts even when I don't have the on facebook.

I do miss a lot of things from HTC Sense, but I prefer the speed of 2.2. Still, there will be a 2.2 + sense ROM soon enough.

Do you think that the reason for the speed is the absence of sense and that it will loose a lot of appeal once sense is put back? I think that I would be happy to lose sense if 3rd party replacements for it were more extensive than they are at present, however good launcher pro plus is.

No, the main reason for the speed boost is JIT, which is built into 2.2. It's basically a way of running app code a hell of a lot faster.

There are custom ROMs with 2.1 + HTC Sense + JIT and they're just as fast as froyd is. But JIT is pretty unstable on 2.1 ROMs, so you still can't have the best of both worlds.

Cronos does a 2.1/Sense/JIT rom though if you want to try it.

I'm used to Sense and Sensehero 5.1 and whenever I try vanilla android such as FroydVillain 1.4.4 I quickly get annoyed with the stock keyboard. Are there any apps that replace the keyboard with a Sense-like keyboard? Does anyone know if I can just flash the Sensehero dark keyboard zip?

I also found the FroydVillain "stock" browser sluggish whereas the sense stock browser was great. I'm not a fan of Dolphin or Opera. Is there a better browser I could use if/when I try FroydVillain again (as I inevitably will!)?

You can just select a HTC_IME keyboard instead of stock android one - it's right there in keyboard settings, under Input Method I think. It's got different colors than the one in stock Sense, but it's the Sense keyboard alright.

Same here, I found the scrolling more sluggish and lazy (delayed response to finger flicks) compared to the Sense browser. I have yet to try Steel Browser, which is said to be quite fast, though.
