Root Universal 1 Click Eris App Apk - No PCs, No Scripts Needed, EASY

eljitto,

Your normal sequence of events for flashing a new ROM would be as follows:

1. Peform a Nandroid backup (he's your friend :))
2. Do any wipes (usually at least 'Wipe Data/Factory reset' and sometimes 'Wipe Dalvik-cache' (the dev's ROM thread will usually direct you if you need to do this second wipe (especially for Froyo ROMs))
3. Flash your .zip (ROM) from sdcard
4. Reboot
5. Enjoy your new ROM!

If you want or need to, you can restore your phone's state from the Nandroid backup you took--so whatever ROM you had installed and whatever apps / data that the Nandroid back backed-up (there are some exceptions if apps2sd is used...I won't address that here).

Very nice, concise instruction on flashing a new ROM, S.A.
icon14.gif
(as usual ;)).

Installing a ROM is easy; it boils down to four or file steps.

(1) Download the ROM .zip file (of your choice) to the SD card on your phone.
(2) Make sure your phone is fully charged.
(3) Using the Amon_RA recovery boot, make a Nandroid Backup.
(4) (Still using Amon_RA) perform a "Wipe data/factory reset".
(5) (Still using Amon_RA) Flash the ROM from the .zip file on your SD card.

Reboot and wait five or six minutes for everything to finish up.

There are a set of instructions with pictures that show you how to do all the above steps (other than downloading your ROM .zip file) in this AF post

There are a few common ways that folks get tripped up doing this. By far, the two most common mistakes are:

- forgetting to do the "Wipe" step (#4)
- corrupting the ROM file when downloading it, or when transferring it to the phone.

The simplest way to have some confidence that your download is not corrupted is to:

(a) Download it to your PC.
(b) See if you can successfully unzip it (on the PC); if not, the download failed.
(c) If that works without any errors, look up the exact size of the .zip file on the PC, and then
(d) transfer the .zip file to the SD card on the phone, making sure that you use the "Safely Remove Hardware" control in the system tray after you have copied the .zip file, but before you turn off "Disk Drive Mode" on the phone
(e) On the phone, using a File Manager, look up the size of the .zip file again, down to the last byte - it needs to be exactly the same size as the file on the PC, down to the last byte.

The above method will not give you 100% assurances that the download file got to your phone in an intact condition, but it's will eliminate the "I never even checked" types of errors. If you want to look at more advanced ways to check file integrity, you can have a look at this post

WreckAB,

I went back and looked at all of your posts.

First, let me say that I completely understand your situation - when you are new to something, all the details can be overwhelming, and it is hard to even know which questions are the right ones to be asking.

Judging from the questions you are asking, I would say that you should not be rooting - yet.

Simply put, you need to spend some more time reading.

Please read this entire thread - all 500+ posts (11 pages). Pay particular attention to the 4th post in that thread - that will answer some of your questions about Amon_RA, Nandroid backups, etc. ( Its' got lots of pictures, too!)

Note that I said "read", not "follow the instructions". Don't do anything to your phone until you have read, and attempted to understand, every single post in that entire thread. Once you have attempted that with some honest effort, you might even understand what you have already been attempting on your phone.

Pay special attention to any posts by myself (erisuser1), scary alien, doogald, mhotovec, Frisco, and Papadroid. (Sorry if I missed somebody).

The objective of this exercise is to witness the problems that other people have had, and see what language and special terms the people that help them out are using - and what URLs they point out in making those explanations. Feel free to use Google or the search engines on AF or XDA at any time to further your understanding.

You will never understand how to be successful using root if you rely on other people to spoon feed you explicit, step-by-step directions; at the moment, you are asking for people to point out to you URLs which are on pages that you have already found; that's absurd. At some point, you need to take up responsibility for learning a couple of things - and, until you tell yourself that you can and will do that, you won't start learning.

Good luck

I was on the fence for quite a while for doing a root to my Eris. I finally took the dive a week ago and rooted with this method. All went very smooth...well until I flashed to Evil Eris 4.0 . My phone locked up at the HTC screen and wouldn't move. I wiped it clear, rebooted and wiped again. All is now well in the land of root and let me tell you what a huge friggin difference. I overclocked it as well to 728mhz and its like having a new phone. Anyone on the fence should do this, but as mentioned above read everything fully then do it. Now my wife wants me to root her Ally after seeing the speed mine has. I'm just happy at 41 I can still keep up with the times, lol

Just did this one click root thingy did step 5 now where do i find the app to uninstall cant seem to find thanks. The app that needs deleting is it the eris rooter app.

ok I'm pretty excited! Someone offered to help the program install over the internet... Thanks guys! ohh if i could only do screen shots!

bcltoys, you should be able to find it in your Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications -> Eris Rooter and click the "Uninstall" button.

Cheers!

Now that I have root when downloading a custom rom do I download to phone, or a computer then transfer to phone.

Either way you find convenient. If you use the phone and are using WiFi, you might want to check the WiFi power setting that controls whether or not WiFi shuts down when the screen goes blank. (Either that or you have to babysit the download by constantly touching the screen). Note that if you download it with the phone, the stock browser puts the files into the

/sdcard/download/

folder. You will need to move it to the /sdcard/ folder using a file manager after the download completes.

In both cases, you should try and verify that you got a full and complete download onto the phone's SD card. Use a MD5 checksum utility or examine the file size on the phone for reasonableness before you boot into Amon_RA recovery. That will save you some headaches.

What would be a good basic file manager for this task. Thanks for the help.

Astro File Manager is generally popular, and it can also give you the MD5 checksum.
It can be found on the Market,

ok, just realized that after my root to EE 4.0 my MMS doesn't work...no pic msgs coming in or going out. I've searched a bit for a fix and I guess being a noob to all this I'm just plain lost. What is the simplest way to fix this issue?...sucks not being able to send or receive pic msgs.

scootr68,

Have you tried posting in this thread: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/138205-evil-eris-4-0-a.html? I've also noticed a lot of discussion about MMS issues w/the the Evil Eris ROMs in the dev's EE4.0 thread over on XDA (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=650302&highlight=evil+eris). I can't specifically help you re. this, but I can direct you to this post/thread: [ROM]-[7/30/2010] Evil Eris v4.0(HTC Sense UI-Android 2.1) - Page 303 - xda-developers

Questions not directly related to the one-click method would best be addressed in other threads (or a new one if you feel so inclined).

Cheers and I hope you find an answer to your issues.

What a fantastic thread!
I salute to Erisuser1, jcase, Scary Alien, Frisco, doogald [sorry if I missed someone], for their dedication and readiness to help. This makes this the greatest forum I have ever seen.

Now, a Q:
It is (rightfully) said in all rooting descriptions to keep the phone fully charged while rooting.
Why not recommend to put the phone to "charge only" mode?
Peter

Thanks Peter.

Charge only mode disables the ability of your computer to see the device via USB, as in disc drive mode. ;)

It is charging during disc drive mode, too of course.

So basically you can avoid the accidental bricking due to discharging while rooting by setting/leaving it in USB disk mode.

I guess, the only reason to have a charge only mode setting is to avoid accidental changes to the file system.
Peter

Actually, in theory you could still get potentially fatal charge from the PC to the phone while in charge only mode. So during a thunderstorm I'd suggest unplugging your phone from your PC. Actually I'd recommend unplugging your PC from the wall, but that's a whole different conversation. :)

Peter
When you're phone is linked to your PC and working as a drive on the PC, the phone cannot 'see' the SD card. So that would be another reason to have a charge only mode, so that your phone remains 100% functional while plugged in to the PC.

Also, erisuser1 has indicated that the phone will charge while not fully booted-up, but much slower than it normally does.

I think the implication is that when you are in recovery, HBOOT, or FASTBOOT mode doing "things" (Nand backups, restores, flashing ROMs, etc.), the battery might discharge faster than it can re-charge. So you want to start with as much juice as possible.

Oh, and thank you Peter, we all appreciate it!

So to summarize after reading all of this, to make sure I get it right...

Step 1) download and install the one click apk or get it from the market and install it.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8699733/erisone010.apk - VERSION 0.1.0

Step 2) Run one click program, read disclaimer, press button.

Step 3) Reboot. Do this by turning the phone off and then turning it back on like you normally do. During the boot up process the phone will automatically boot up into Amon's Android System recovery.

Step 4.) Using Amon's recovery and the trackball to navigate and select, pick the backup/restore option which will do a Nandroid backup of the current ROM on your phone.

Main_sel_BackupRestore.jpg

BackRestory_Menu.jpg

Backup_Confirm_Query.jpg

Backup_in_Progress.jpg

Step 6.) Once the backup is complete, press the Vol Down button to return to the main menu.

Step. 7.) Once back at the main menu, pick "Flash Zip from SDCard" and then select rootme.zip that came with the one click program.

Step 8.) Press the Vol Down button to return to the main menu and select "Reboot System Now"

Step 9) Once the phone is re-booted, go to settings>applications>development and turn usb debugging on.

Step 10.) Uninstall One Click program

To install a custom ROM after all of this...

Step 1.) Download custom ROM to SDCard

Step 2.) Turn phone off

Step 3.) Reboot into Amons recovery mode. Hold Vol Down and Power Simultaneously.

Step 4.) If instructed by the developer, perform the necessary wipes.

Main_sel_Wipe.jpg
Wipe_Menu.jpg

Step 5.) Press Vol Down to return to the main menu and select "Flash Zip from SDcard"

Step 6.) Select the *.zip file that you downloaded in Step 1.

Step. 7.) Press Vol Down to go back to the Main Menu then select "Reboot System Now"

Do this and a nandroid backup everytime you install a custom ROM.

This seems to be the easiest method to get root access, so I am going to give this a try. I only have one paid for application on my phone but worry about losing it. If I were to run this software to root my phone, does the Amons Recovery allow me to backup and restore my configuration? If I were to flash a new rom (perhaps a 2.2 if I can find it) from what I understand I would lose all my installed applications. Will they be recoverable through Amons Recovery from my SD Card?
