eljitto,
Your normal sequence of events for flashing a new ROM would be as follows:
1. Peform a Nandroid backup (he's your friend)
2. Do any wipes (usually at least 'Wipe Data/Factory reset' and sometimes 'Wipe Dalvik-cache' (the dev's ROM thread will usually direct you if you need to do this second wipe (especially for Froyo ROMs))
3. Flash your .zip (ROM) from sdcard
4. Reboot
5. Enjoy your new ROM!
If you want or need to, you can restore your phone's state from the Nandroid backup you took--so whatever ROM you had installed and whatever apps / data that the Nandroid back backed-up (there are some exceptions if apps2sd is used...I won't address that here).
).Installing a ROM is easy; it boils down to four or file steps.
(1) Download the ROM .zip file (of your choice) to the SD card on your phone.
(2) Make sure your phone is fully charged.
(3) Using the Amon_RA recovery boot, make a Nandroid Backup.
(4) (Still using Amon_RA) perform a "Wipe data/factory reset".
(5) (Still using Amon_RA) Flash the ROM from the .zip file on your SD card.
Reboot and wait five or six minutes for everything to finish up.
There are a set of instructions with pictures that show you how to do all the above steps (other than downloading your ROM .zip file) in this AF post
There are a few common ways that folks get tripped up doing this. By far, the two most common mistakes are:
- forgetting to do the "Wipe" step (#4)
- corrupting the ROM file when downloading it, or when transferring it to the phone.
The simplest way to have some confidence that your download is not corrupted is to:
(a) Download it to your PC.
(b) See if you can successfully unzip it (on the PC); if not, the download failed.
(c) If that works without any errors, look up the exact size of the .zip file on the PC, and then
(d) transfer the .zip file to the SD card on the phone, making sure that you use the "Safely Remove Hardware" control in the system tray after you have copied the .zip file, but before you turn off "Disk Drive Mode" on the phone
(e) On the phone, using a File Manager, look up the size of the .zip file again, down to the last byte - it needs to be exactly the same size as the file on the PC, down to the last byte.
The above method will not give you 100% assurances that the download file got to your phone in an intact condition, but it's will eliminate the "I never even checked" types of errors. If you want to look at more advanced ways to check file integrity, you can have a look at this post
good luck

on the xda developer's page, i found the kaos froyo ROM... now im not sure WHERE to download it from... To me it's not really clear... or im just slow, which u probably know already.. so i guess im back into the handholding proces... the answers im getting are just a little vague...
Also Nandroid... Amon_Ra.... are these on my phone already?????
Also (i know i know) how can i tell if i successfully backed up my stock ROM with estrongs????
Thanks Guys!
I'm just happy at 41 I can still keep up with the times..

ok I'm pretty excited! Someone offered to help the program install over the internet... I am now rooted (eris 1-click root) running kaos froyo v.32 and i love just the fact that the APPS can be stored to sd card, let alone the living wallpaper and other goodies.. also went to the Dolphin browser and downloaded a different home screen app with the sliding app drawer! and guess what.. all the apps that i always wanted but never cold quite fit onto the phone i have every single one! Thanks guys! ohh if i could only do screen shots!WreckAB,
I went back and looked at all of your posts.
First, let me say that I completely understand your situation - when you are new to something, all the details can be overwhelming, and it is hard to even know which questions are the right ones to be asking.
Judging from the questions you are asking, I would say that you should not be rooting - yet.
Simply put, you need to spend some more time reading.
Please read this entire thread - all 500+ posts (11 pages). Pay particular attention to the 4th post in that thread - that will answer some of your questions about Amon_RA, Nandroid backups, etc. ( Its' got lots of pictures, too!)
Note that I said "read", not "follow the instructions". Don't do anything to your phone until you have read, and attempted to understand, every single post in that entire thread. Once you have attempted that with some honest effort, you might even understand what you have already been attempting on your phone.
Pay special attention to any posts by myself (erisuser1), scary alien, doogald, mhotovec, Frisco, and Papadroid. (Sorry if I missed somebody).
The objective of this exercise is to witness the problems that other people have had, and see what language and special terms the people that help them out are using - and what URLs they point out in making those explanations. Feel free to use Google or the search engines on AF or XDA at any time to further your understanding.
You will never understand how to be successful using root if you rely on other people to spoon feed you explicit, step-by-step directions; at the moment, you are asking for people to point out to you URLs which are on pages that you have already found; that's absurd. At some point, you need to take up responsibility for learning a couple of things - and, until you tell yourself that you can and will do that, you won't start learning.
Good luck

Thanks guys! ohh if i could only do screen shots!
Just did this one click root thingy did step 5 now where do i find the app to uninstall cant seem to find thanks. The app that needs deleting is it the eris rooter app.
bcltoys, you should be able to find it in your Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications -> Eris Rooter and click the "Uninstall" button.
Cheers!
Now that I have root when downloading a custom rom do I download to phone, or a computer then transfer to phone.
What would be a good basic file manager for this task. Thanks for the help.Either way you find convenient. If you use the phone and are using WiFi, you might want to check the WiFi power setting that controls whether or not WiFi shuts down when the screen goes blank. (Either that or you have to babysit the download by constantly touching the screen). Note that if you download it with the phone, the stock browser puts the files into the
/sdcard/download/
folder. You will need to move it to the /sdcard/ folder using a file manager after the download completes.
In both cases, you should try and verify that you got a full and complete download onto the phone's SD card. Use a MD5 checksum utility or examine the file size on the phone for reasonableness before you boot into Amon_RA recovery. That will save you some headaches.

Astro File Manager is generally popular, and it can also give you the MD5 checksum.
It can be found on the Market,
)...check out this thread and let me know what you think: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/168942-phone-rom-checksum-verifier.htmlok, just realized that after my root to EE 4.0 my MMS doesn't work...no pic msgs coming in or going out. I've searched a bit for a fix and I guess being a noob to all this I'm just plain lost. What is the simplest way to fix this issue?...sucks not being able to send or receive pic msgs.
Actually, in theory you could still get potentially fatal charge from the PC to the phone while in charge only mode. So during a thunderstorm I'd suggest unplugging your phone from your PC. Actually I'd recommend unplugging your PC from the wall, but that's a whole different conversation. So basically you can avoid the accidental bricking due to discharging while rooting by setting/leaving it in USB disk mode.

When you're phone is linked to your PC and working as a drive on the PC, the phone cannot 'see' the SD card. So that would be another reason to have a charge only mode, so that your phone remains 100% functional while plugged in to the PC.I guess, the only reason to have a charge only mode setting is to avoid accidental changes to the file system.
