Root Stock T-mobile UK Firmware needed Samsung Galaxy i5700 Portal/Spica please

You're on thin ice, with access to a short rope, thrown by a fat bloke.

If I were in your shoes, I'd install 2.1 baseband JC1, as this is the firmware that can be installed from Samsung. Do a factory reset, and keep your head down. I doubt you'll be in trouble with your supplier if you return it with 2.1 baseband JC1.

should i follow your root guide to install this, leaving out the steps to root it?


sorry for the questions but i am a noob at android flashing, i bought the portal off ebay and it already had the 2.1 firmware on it

currently on the phone:

Firmware version 2.1-Update1
Baseband version: i570EXXJD1
Kernel Version 2.6.29root@SE-S608 #2
Build number@ ECLAIR.XXJE1

Yep you can follow root guide, however, I570EXEJC1 is packaged with seperate files rather that a One Package update.

To confirm, run odin,
On the right hand side windows Select these files.

OPS = spica_jc3_ops
BOOT =I570EXXJA1_CL132638_Bootloader.tar
Phone = I570EXXJC1_Phone.tar
PDA = I570EXEJC1_CL_PDA.tar
CSC = I570EOXEJC1-CSC-MULTI-CL186713.tar
One Package = Blank

Left hand side window
[ ] One Package
[x] Reboot (ticked)
[x] Protect OPS (ticked)
[x] Reset Time (ticked) 300
[ ] Debug (not ticked)

Then follow root guide.

hi just finished and it I think it worked, updated successfully following your instructions

now states

Firmware version 2.1-Update1
Baseband version: i570EXXJC1
Kernel Version 2.6.29root@SE-S610 #2
Build number@ ECLAIR.XEJC1

yer sure i will l keep the thread updated, my brother works at carphonewarehouse so im going to get him to send it in for warranty repair for me as if i was a customer.

Yes, please, please, please let me know what kind of feedback you get.

I have hacked/rooted mine till there is no tomorrow and my phone has now been accidentally damaged. I'm hoping for repair (I am paying insurance on the phone) but I don't think they would allow it as I had so much software on it and made so many changes it doesn't really look like a Samsung Galaxy Portal, from a software point of view.

And I have followed your guide and went back to the same firmware as stated here but is it meant to have 'root' in the kernel version.

I am going to send it off based on what happens with you so please let me know.

Another query that bothers me is that Android 2.1 isn't available on T-Mobile so if I send it to them with 2.1 on it (when I got it and T-Mobile only sell it with 1.5) will they deny to repair my phone ?

hi i will post back as soon as i get any results, going by what Beerkan has said, just act like there speaking another language if they ask about the firmware, rooting, etc

the firmware that we have flashed is firmware that samsung could put on the phone, so does not look that dodgy, im not sure about the root kernel, but there is a app in the market that test if your phone is rooted, and mine came back as not rooted after i flashed the above firmware.

just got to hope for the best i suppose,

will update as soon as i can.

p,s if your insurance is with an insurance company as opposed to T-mobile then most likely you will just get a new/refurb unit no questions

You could probably argue that when you installed NPS Studio, and connected your phone, it offered to update your firmware, so you accepted it.

True, Do you know or could you guess which firmware from the samsungfirmware site that would actually be used as stock 1.5 ?

The whole update process by plugging it into a pc and Kies or PC Studio won't work from my experience. The computer just doesn't recognise the portal on android 1.5 what so ever so I don't think that would be enough.

I am happy just using odin and flashing it to the stock 1.5 but i'm not sure on which one it would be.
 
I'm awaiting my repair envelope to send off my Galaxy Portal to 3 for a warranty repair. Also following this advice. Fingers crossed! What happened in the end unknown-singh? I'll keep you guys posted.

they gave me a refurbished model, no questions asked about the rom, which was lucky for me.


i don't know if this is how all claims will go, as the person just might not have checked the software.

but good luck anyway :)
 
Hi, I'm having the same issue. I flashed the phone to stock firmware. My about phone displays:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: i570EXXJD1
Kernel version: 2.6.29 root@SE-S601 #2
Build number: ECLAIR.XXJH6

How do I revert back to the stock kernel version? It still displays root@SE-S601#2. I'm not rooted anymore though, checked with rootchecker app. Will the kernel version give me problems if I give the phone in for repair?
