New G2 (Desire Z) status?!? Help/questions...

Ok so I've pretty much decided on upgrading my G1 to a G2. I've been screening the web for what seems like weeks for G2 news, release dates, etc. I recently talked to t-mobile (US) and they said that it's supposed to be available 'later this month' (that's what the outsource phone rep said). It wasn't confidence inspiring.

2 questions:

1. Is there any other HTC phone besides the G2 that has close to the same features that I should be considering? (slide out keyboard is important to me)

2. Can anyone shed any more light on the G2's seemingly 'black hole' release? I know about the approximate price, the basic specs, have watched the hands on review, etc. But I have absolutely nothing concrete as to release & pricing (I'm not sure if I'll sign a new contract or buy the phone outright). Anything outside of the ordinary web search info would be greatly appreciated.

1. Not really, if we're limited to HTC. All 2010 HTC phones with keyboard. The G2 is definitely the best of the bunch, I'd say. You might consider holding off for the MyTouch HD; while it doesn't have a keyboard, reports are that the screen is big enough for the onscreen keyboard to not be an issue. Personally, I still want a G2.

2. It's not really a black hole release... they say it'll be out this month, and I'm inclined to believe them. It's a lot better than waiting for the original Desire... I was waiting on that thing for months, then last month they quietly released it exclusive the CDMA US Cellular. I have a feeling T-Mobile is going to really push the G2, the same way they did with the G1.
 
I am ditching the BH2 for this one once I can do it seems like this has a better history but at the time my BH had the highest storage which I needed.
 
Also, fyi, I spoke with a RadioShack worker today and they expect to have the g2 in-store by October 6th, and will be selling it for $149.99 on a 2 yr contract. Looks like I may be waiting until then....
