Your #1 Tip for New Users

my prefrence:
get rockplayer for avi files
alchemy (great free game)
appeak poker (great free online poker)
asphalt (good 3D driving game, think there is a light version but worth paying for)
antivirus version 32 (looks like a yellow and white pill and is free)
astro (free file manager)
blow up (great free game)
earthrot (good live wallpaper)
installer (free installer for adding games and apps from a pc)
myplayer (free iplayer app)
thunderstorm free (live wallpaper)
carrom 3D (the free version has pool and snooker)

just some of the apps and games i have found so far...
keep looking in the market for more and follow this forum for great advice
 
It is long but great way to get an idea of just what is possibly aesthetically. It is also a good way to get to know about replacement apps.

I'm finding my Desire/Android very non-intuative, and this is an example.

First off I've got to download a file manager app just so that I can find the MP3 files I've copied from my desktop PC (having taken 3 hours to get my contacts and calendar to sync with Outlook...), then there isn't a nice simple 'set as ringtone' option...

Anyway, I've got two MP3 files in /media/audio/notifications, but when I go to the 'Phone ringtone' option within 'Sound settings', I get a window which says "Complete action using" then the option of 'com.htc.app. HtcRingtonePickerAct' or 'Zedge ringtones'.

What am I doing wrong?
 
You have zedge installed which is also a notification picker. because you have two apps to use (the default or zedge) you have to choose which is default.

Choose the first one and tick the default tick box.

Thanks for that.

So moving forward, will anything in the media/audio folder get picked up, or does the subfolder matter? (have created 3 - alarms, ringtones, notifications - anyway).
 
OK I've just added a notification sound, but am I right in saying that I get this whether it is an SMS or an email?

(I have also just downloaded MailDroid to allow me to get notified of emails sent to my Hotmail account - and the mail I sent to test this just created a booming noise across the office...)

Is there not an option to have one sound for SMS and another for email?

Or is it another app needed for that too..?
 
You can set a default notification which works accross all. You can choose within sms, email etc whether you want to use default or something else.
 
my tip would be to buy an extra USB cable. then you can charge your desire via any old USB socket if you're at work or out and about somewhere.

i know that the cable which is supplied is meant to double as a charger and a USB cable but i've taken it to my office and left it there on numerous occassions leaving me unable to charge my phone at home.

My number 1 tip is to head over to Ebay and search for 'genuine htc desire pouch'. There are loads of sellers to choose from and they will protect your Desire from all sorts of bumps and drops.

Sure there is, just create the folders on the SD card and the phone will find the MP3 files to set them as ringtones (or alarms or notification sounds). But you need the other two folders:

media/audio/notifications
media/audio/alarms
media/audio/ringtones

Drop the MP3 you want for a ringtone into that folder and after you unplug the phone it will prepare the SD card and find the MP3's. Then just go into Settings, Sound, and pick the ringtone. Easy-peasy.

Depends how "new" the user is, but this little bit of wisdom is essential:
- the back arrow walks you back and eventually out of an open application (making you quit it);
- the home button lets you switch to another application, (usually) leaving the current application in its current state, but moving it to the background.

another just sprang to mind...

Get 'AppBrain' it makes finding, reading up on, and installing apps a lot easier, and its free.
 
As well as a short press to activate icons or items, a long press (touch and hold) often brings up a menu of options, especially in calendar, contact lists, etc. It's the equivalent of a right-click on a mouse (if you use a right-handed mouse!). Try it with different UI elements and in different apps and see what (if anything) happens.

Also, the "people" app does have a search option. You won't find it in the menu, but if you press the search key while in "people" it brings up the "search people" interface, making the separate "search people" app redundant IMO. Someone will probably tell me this was in the manual, but it took me forever to stumble on it (while cursing HTC for their stupidity in making these two separate programs...).
 
It is not made of glass, indeed it is quite tough so don't worry about treating it with kid gloves. It is more than capable of surviving the big wide world without a bloody great case to protect it.
Common sense is always the key. Don't put it in your pocket with keys or change, don't let it slide around in the car door, don't let the missus just throw it into a handbag and it'll be fine. :D
Oh and you don't need a screen protector either. You do if you are that way inclined but trust me, the screen is already very scratch resistant.
Leave the cotton wool at home. It's a phone :D
