Help Evo Rebooting on its own

It's 100 percent tied to the gps.Turn off the GPS radio and the problem goes away. Even though your not using the GPS, your phone is using it, with location update, weather updates. I am still using foursquare and family locator still sees my phone.

I leave my GPS on all the time and my phone no longer seems to have the problem so there must be more to it than that.

I agree that the issue is tied to the GPS. The other day I was able to sneak around the problem by only using google maps for a minute or so at a time. If I actually went through and used the "navigate" feature, within 5 minutes it would reboot. If I just used the maps feature, it did not. I have noticed other times however when using no apps the phone will reboot. Perhaps GPS is going in background without us realizing it. Anyhow, HTC needs to fix this very soon or I will be switching to the EPIC 4G phone and giving Samsung a try. Are there any know issues with it?

You and I have the same issue.... I have pinpointed it to the interaction of GPS with the Mobile Network. As I stated it seems both GPS and mobile networks needs to be on for Google Maps and Sprint Navigation to work properly, if activate the Navigate I get the instant reboot with in usually 5 minutes to, times vary. I have also tested without the mobile network, GPS on, and no issue. Last, but not least, if I shut off the GPS, I seem to have the same issue with rebooting if and only if I have the Mobile Networks checked on. I could be using the phone with no issue and then all of a sudden it goes into reboot mode. If I can get into the settings and uncheck Mobile Networks, it quits rebooting, sometimes I can't get it to do it and have to pull the battery.

This is where I go:
Menu>Settings>Wireless & networks and then uncheck mobile networks.

I can shut mobile networks off and use my wi-fi at home with absolutely no issue.

Now, for the last note, I heard back from HTC today and was asked if anyone contacted me about replacing my phone, to which I responded no, not yet. He informed me that they have enough phones and have pinpointed the issue and will be sending an update OTA. I first misunderstood him and he repeated that an OTA would be sent and it was a prioirty. I then said to him, so it is a software issue and he confirmed that it seems to be the interaction between the GPS and Mobile Networks and how the phone handles it, he compared it to a computer shutting down when too many things are running at once (thing is, I could get it to happen after a fresh wipe to factory too). Unfortunately I did not confirm if it was the HTS software or Froyo, but just happy that enough of us called and complained that finally we may have the fix. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

If you have this issue... PLEASE continue to call, we need this OTA fast!!!

Funny thing They called me the other day saying we wont be sending you a phone we have as many as we need. We dont need yours. So if you want a new phone contact Sprint. So i went to the store and ordered a replacement Then when I get home there was a Fedex package from HTC with a new phone and a 4 gig flash drive thrown in. Now what do I do Got a new one coming from Sprint on monday

My evo began rebooting past two days. Did a lot of checking and found that those proprietary apps I shut off are all back. Maps is one overlap app and I agree about network polling issues. I feel it is a plan that is getting out of hand.

Hi again, called sprint and the tech guy was kind of crafty in his answers while agreeing that some gps/ location polling issues may be part of issue. I pressed the point a bit and I feel that those pre loaded apps that constantly replace themselves back to running status after being turned off and which use location services are driving the background data issue. He said I can get them taken out at the store instead of rooting my evo which I feel is an admission there is a shadow shell, or timer keeping those vendors apps active which in turn drives the other issues.

Yes, the Epic has a problem in that the upload speed is capped at 150 kb/s (that's bits, not bytes). Sprint won't admit there's a problem and Samsung won't even look into it without Sprint's say so. Go to the sprint forums, get on the one for the Epic, and search for "upload" or "capped" in the body. It is causing people to returning their Epics in droves (and making me regret that I ordered one just before reading about it).

My EVO started rebooting alot the past few days. Most times it would be 5 or more times consecutively. I took it back to a Sprint store today and they did a factory reset. I got home and synched it with my PC to get my contacts. I d/led a couple apps and it started again. I found the link from EARLYMON and started on Step 3 since I just had a factory reset. It began rebooting again within an hour and its still going (about 6 times back to back so far) UGGHH!!!!

My EVO has rebooted five times today even after the update, it starts if I'm using an application or surfing the web, it even started rebooting when I scroll. It's really getting to be annoying.

I ended up taking mine back on Monday to a Sprint store when I was in CLE, I just couldn't take it anymore. They claimed to have never seen the issue before. They took my phone for 20 minutes and I ended up getting another phone. Two things, it's a refurbished unit according to the guy and has 2.1 on it. EVERYTHING works perfect. I have thrown every app I had before and zero issues now, can use GPS, talk on the phone everything on and no issues. I just got back home and I am going to update to 2.2, if the issue comes back... I will be going back to Sprint. I will tell you that I am not happy about receiving a refurb, but heck it works, but if I update this and get the same issue, then I will be complaining to Sprint again. Keep your fingers crossed for me :)

I havent tried this yet I want to swap phones before I do

UPDATE: 22Sep from Engadget
Sprint outs EVO 4G and Hero updates, EVO framerate cap might be solved -- Engadget

“Last time we checked in on this problem, HTC had said that the EVO 4G’s 30fps cap on video output simply couldn’t be increased — but it seems the latest firmware update might prove otherwise. We’ve got a couple screen shots showing details of the latest upgrades for both the EVO and the Hero; in the latter case, you’ve just got a couple bug fixes, but the EVO’s list includes a total of four: the nasty calendar issue, the 30fps fix, a reboot problem involving GPS, and multiple Gmail sync that was busted in the Froyo update. Interestingly, Sprint’s official changelog only mentions the calendar and Gmail sync fixes, so it’s possible they’re trying to keep the other two low-key to prevent undue questions and curiosity from folks as they upgrade. What’s everyone seeing out there?”

My phone has been working fine until today! The phone has been rebooting itself nonstop until I pulled the battery. When the phone is hot it doesn't even get to the 4G screen but if I let it sit and cool "sometimes" i will get to use phone for a minute then reboots. I tried using a backup rom i made with clockwork from 2 weeks ago and it still does it. I tried the new rooted OTA also, and even fresh-evo-3.3.0.1. They all reboot once the phone warms up.

I have been able to pinpoint that it happens for some reason with GPS and mobile networks on, if it goes into a reboot loop, if I can get in and shut off the mobile network, it stops rebooting. I have been able to run the GPS by itself, but unfortunatley both google maps and Sprint Navigation require the mobile network to be on. I have now had it reboot without GPS on and just mobile network on.

If I run it on wifi only with mobile networks off absolutely no issues what so ever.

This works for me also! Heres what I had to do:

- Take out battery for couple minutes and let phone cool down. Then the phone will boot fine.
- If I don't let the phone cool down before turning it on it will reboot before or at the 4G screen load screen over and over.
- When phone finish booting immediately go to disable "mobile network".
- Once mobile networking on it will reboot phone.
- Wifi, text, calls works with no problem

Tried the newest 3.26.651.6 RUU from sprint which unrooted my phone and made it all stock still same results.

so i havent had any rebooting issues at all since the start..UNTIL the FPS cap removal update..now my phone reboots more than ten times a day..and oddly enough thats whenever i press the home button or back button out of an app..(doesnt matter which app it happens to all)..if anyone has also been having this same thing happen please help..tired of constantly rebooting to use the interent ._.

Since my factory reset last week a I have only downloaded a few apps (Yelp, Alchemy, Pocket Empires) and have not setup any email. It has been working OK for the most part with no reboots over the weekend. Today while playing Alchemy it started rebooting and after the 5th consecutive restart, I pulled the battery for a few minutes and was able to get it to boot normally. I think I am gonna take it back and get a new one.

I went to a Sprint store and the guy there said to do a factory reset because it might be a bad app. I told him I've already done that and it still rebooting, he said to take it to a sprint repair shop, basically he couldn't do anything for me. I'm getting pissed off because what if I have to use this phone in an emergency and call 911, wouldn't want it rebooting all of a sudden while I'm in the middle of a call.

Mine has been doing this for about 3-4 weeks now. Some days not at all, some days 20 times. Today at work It would shut down, reboot, load the desktop and be ok for about 1 minute the shut down, reboot etc........over and over and over for about 2 hours. Probably rebooted 30 times back to back. It finally went to a screen I had never seen before that required me to do a hard reset. I left it alone until I got to the sprint store. They took care of the hard reset and are sending me a new battery "just in case" its a battery issue...lol. Of course they have never seen or heard of this issue with the evo. With all the complaints I read online about this issue gives me the feeling their trying to hide the issue. Seams to be working fine now but I lost my iheartradio app and its nowhere to be found int the market place now, whats up with that???

I brought my to sprint store and they said it was battery issue. They replaced my battery and tested my phone for 30mins with mobile network on and said its okay now.. I tested it by streaming youtube for 5mins in store but on my way home it started to reboot again.

Called back and getting replacement sent.

Had my first random reboot, in a LONG time, this morning. Hopefully it was just a fluke. I'm running LauncherPro exclusively and hadn't had an issue with reboots the entire time while having it as my default launcher.

Mine was rebooting daily, then my SD card started locking me out, I switched to a different SD card and have only rebooted once in the 2 weeks since I switched.

My guess is that this is a hardware design problem, which is why Sprint is laying low on this. Pushing an update is one thing, but replacing thousands of phones costs big bucks.

I'm thinking that the current drawn by the combination of the data radio and the GPS module exceeds what the traces or components can handle, causing a voltage drop that ultimately reboots the phone.

Or it might be a heat dissipation problem as some have noted.

Either way, not an inexpensive repair for Sprint to implement. If so, it's going to be a long, tough slog for Evo users to get satisfaction I imagine.

I am definitely holding off on the purchase of an Evo now that I've learned of two significant design flaws, the other being the USB charging connector debacle.

Good luck, all. I hope they get this fixed soon.

Hi all, sorry for my error of spelling I'm from Italy
I would you like to inform that the HTC Desire in the other part of the world (Europe) have the same exact issue you descrived before

random and unexpectly reboot in particular case if you use the mobile network and the GPS

accordly with your post I think that is an "overvoltage" issue or it is related to the SIM/RADIO combination
infact , same device works fine and other not...that's could be related to the voltage in the area of the SIM card that can cause a sort of short-circuit and after the first reboot the problem seems to be degenerative,

in Italy and in the rest of Europe there is many HTC desire afflict by this problem an the People don't know the really issue that cause this problem,

Why HTC don't say nothing??????

Because HTC must spend lots of money to repair it if it is a problem with the hardware. If HTC says nothing, then the users don't know that other people have the problem and won't make trouble for HTC.

Except we users have the Internet.
