Froyo (2.09.405.8) update - Windows not required

I installed 2.09 as well and immediately got the prompt for 2.10 after the boot, I decided not to bother because of some issues I've heard about in 2.10 (wifi dying, etc).
The WiFi and other issues only happen if you take out the goldcard, it has nothing to do with the update itself.
But now I'm running a custom ROM and liking it but I may go back to my stock 2.2 just to get the update when Telus gets it.
Why bother? The Telus version may have problems, or it may have more branding, or whatever. And when will the next update come after that? Probably never. At least with an unbranded HTC version you'll get whatever updates HTC releases.
:D

The funny thing is, I had my goldcard taken out of the phone as soon as I updated my phone to Froyo and yet never ever experienced, not a single issue with Wi-Fi. Now when I "goldcarded" my primary 8Gb MicroSD too, I keep it in my phone all the times, but as I said, in the beginning, I did not have goldcard in my phone, it was just regular card. Still, no Wi-Fi issues for me. How's that possible ? Is this problem global or was it happening just for some people? Little confused right now...

Oh yes, wouldn't go back to Telus ROM ever again. Some people also mentioned Telus may be removing Wi-Fi HOTSPOT feature in the next update. If that's true... things are not looking good for Telus Desire users, not very good.

Well, that's good, but still. Telus promised a lot of things in the past. Did they deliver though? Like for example, Froyo coming out mid October, and today is 21st, almost clo@er to the end of the month. And yet, still no trace of Froyo... or is it maybe available now?

No, but I would imagine there would be quite a large uproar if they don't since its right smack dab on their page :D

thanks a lot OP. I upgraded my Telus HTC-Desire smoothly to 2.09. Finally, I don't have to wait for Telus "mid Oct upgrade" promise. Enjoying the new stuffs. Plus I found it's not longer interfere with my other Wifi devices.

This is incredibly frustrating. I think TELUS has made some changes to their most recent ROM that disables the RUU's posted on this site. I too have been getting the dreaded Error 130 using either the USB method using the first ROM and using the SD card method on this page using the second ROM.

If anyone has any insight into this, it would be most appreciated. I think I've burned about six hours on this so far and I've now got a factory-reset TELUS POS that I get to re-configure for nothing...

If this means anything to anyone, here are my software specs:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1

Baseband version: 32.41.00.32U_4.08.00.09

Kernel version: 2.6.29-e5576724
htc-kernel@and18-2 #1

Build: 1.29.661.1 CL198499 release-keys

Software number: 1.29.661.1

Thanks for all of your brilliant efforts. This is all way above my knowledge level.

U know this what I post here is not a solution, but it will give you an insight. This is what most people are saying and I truly believe it's true. It is clearly a goldcard problem, you have to create a proper golcard and everything will work. BTW, my Desire had exactly the same software specs as yours and yet it updated without a single problem. Also unlike many in here believe you can not create a golcard just with any MicroSD card, what are the odds I found 4 different cards, all different sizes (2, 4, 8 and 16gb) and created golcards without a single issue. It is about the proccess how you're creating it. I used my old PC with Windows 7 on it (saying old because I use Mac now), installed the latest version of HTCsync (very important) and did not have a single problem with drivers needed for this whole goldcard process. Very important is to properly copy/paste that chunk of hex code from your goldcard.img file to the disk image of your MicroSD card. Sectors 000-170 must be properly replaced, meaning 170 has to be replaced too.

This is the thread where it gave me a clue error 130 is a goldcard problem. There is no other logical explanation anyway:

Well of course you had no problems...the issue arises when you update WITHOUT the goldcard in the phone. Once the update is done, you can remove the goldcard if you want. But it MUST be put back in to do any other updates in the future whether they are OTA or RUU.

Error 130 is a customer ID error which means you DO NOT have a proper goldcard. You have to realize that even if you think you made one, the card may not work properly, so you need to make another one using the goldcard creation tool and try again.

If it doesn't work the first time, something is wrong, so don't keep trying for hours and get frustrated - ask for help. The answer is very simple, you do not have a proper goldcard. Try again.
:)

As I tossed and turned last night, I was thinking the same thing. It's got to be the gold card. That's the only way the phone would be thinking the model is wrong. Thanks for the confirmation. I'm glad you've had success with the same phone. I'll try creating a couple of different cards tonight and post back here. Hopefully my experience will be a little less stressful.

Forgive me if this has already been asked, but is there a gold card verification utility out there somewhere? I used widely referenced gold card tool and it said it was successful.

Cheers,

Dan

Did you format the card in the phone before trying to make the goldcard? Then create the goldcard and follow the procedure carefully. Most cards will work, only a few do not. I made all three of my micro SD cards into goldcards, and all three are different are different sizes and 2 different brands. No issues with any of them.

Same here, all cards are working great as goldcards and it didn't take me "few times trying to create them". They all worked very first time I tried. The key of successful updating your phone is to have properly created goldcard. After that everything is a breeze.

@bfksc - thanks for your pre ious reply to me. I did not know that and now I know. Learning new stuff every time I visit this thread. Thank you for that!

Error 130 is definitely a Gold Card issue! I reran the Gold Card Tool and copied the latest zip file and everything worked flawlessly. I new is was an EU version when the first screen asks for language and you can only select EU countries.

The APN also needed to be entered manually, as mentioned previously, but other than that I'm another very happy unbranded TELUS HTC Desire user! What a difference a day makes...

This is a great thread and many thanks for all the helpful advice.

This update worked flawlessly.
One question though about the wifi hotspot feature.
When I select "manage users" on the next screen both options are greyed out "allowed users only" and "max connections 2"
Can I have control over this?

Sorry, just realized you can only set these options before you enable the hotspot but I'll leave this up in case anyone else runs across this.

I think I read this in another thread but if I update my Telus Desire I will still get 3g in Canada?

Also has anyone used the gold card tool in the market?

You mean "GoldCard Helper" app from the Market? It works perfectly fine. It gave me exactly the same Reverse CID number I've got using PC (actually Mac, but running Windows 7 through Parallels). I tried the other card (4Gb Kingston) I turned into GoldCard and the Reverse CID number is again, exactly the same as the one I've got using PC.

A lot faster way of finding out your Reverse CID number than going through all the hustle of doing it on PC. It will not create a GoldCard for you, but it will give you direct link to PSAS goldcard generator. All you have to do is to enter this Reverse CID number in the required field, and goldcard.img will be sent to your email almost instantly.

So I used the gold card helper app and everything went smoothly!

Some weird things though (I used 2.10). I noticed the friendstream widget does not update properly when you hit the refresh button (located at the bottom of the widget). The first time I hit refresh the phone connects (you can see the H in the notification bar), however the syncing icon (2 arrows forming a circle) does not show up and maybe 1 or 2 updates are pulled in. When you refresh a second time the syncing symbol shows up in the notification bar and more updates are pulled into the widget.

Also, in the browser, scrolling (left right and up and down) seems stickier and less responsive then before. Anyone else have these issues? I unbranded a Telus Desire.

I'm not having those issues with FriendStream widget, updates are working as they should, but again I'm using wi-fi only, not on any data plan. Maybe you have to set some APN settings now after you updated your phone to Froyo.

However, that does not explain as why are you experiencing trouble with scrolling inside your browser. After the debrand/update to Froyo, I'm having nothing but improvements in every aspect of using this phone. Scrolling, animations, everything is just snappier, better, smoother... not to mention battery life. Not sure why are you having those issues, but have you tried hard reset since the Froyo update?

Hard reset as in factory reset?

I already have the correct APN's so that is definitely not the culprit. I will try a factory reset and see if this fixes everything.

Maybe I will just reflash with 2.09. Do I just follow the same steps when originally flashing the device (ie renaming the 2.09 file, putting it on the SD card, boot mode and hit the volume up key)?

Can't tell for sure, since I never went that route. I flushed my Telus version of this phone with 2.10 straight, never even tried 2.09.

You'll have to wait until someone more experienced stops by, sorry :(

So it looks like the first time I manually refresh the friendstream widget, it pulls in Twitter updates. When I refresh it again it then pulls the facebook updates. I have changed the sync settings for FB and Twitter, but no success.
