Desire HD proximity sensor failure

Ok, just tell me where do I go wrong : Original problem was that some dirt or particles got between the case and promixity sensor, hence the sensor was unable to sense anything. When youre blowing in there, you clean the sensor head from anything suspicious and make it work. Now here is the catch ! : How this fix can be 'permanent' fix , I would think particles, dust, etc. will block the sensor again...
 
You're not wrong, dust will get back in there, but how much it affects the sensor & how often we'll need to give it a blow is yet to be seen.
I find the whole thing very strange, 1. How did the debris get in there in the first place considering it's brand new (assembly problem at manufacture?), 2. The drastic effect it had on operation.
Nearly 24 hours since I gave it a single blow & all's working perfectly.
 
Well, I've managed to get mine changed at P4U & the new one seems even lovelier than the first.

I'd demonstrated by BSOD yesterday & altho they agreed to swap it they had no stock. They didn't call me as promised today but when I called them around 4ish they said they had some.

I went in & the fella asked if he could take it 'out back' to the workshop as he might be able to fix it - I said you can but I've come for a replacement, not a repair. He was fine actually & well on side. His buddy tried the blowing thing but it didn't make a difference.

He carried on with the swap (I didn't leave any room for wriggling out anyway) and had to call head office for an exchange authorisation code. They made him try a few things with the handset, mainly doing a factory reset. It still made no difference & as he could see me getting less patient he assured me that he would swap it whatever they said.

Anyway, I tested the new one in the shop & it's good as gold. I think the first one had been played with as this one had a plastic cover in place, no fingerprints & came from a sealed box (unlike the first one!).

My biggest problem was wiping my data off the old handset. I'd populated all my contact numbers, texts, email accounts, social networking & a ton of other personal stuff. Guess what?? Factory reset didn't clear it. The option in Settings->Privacy to remove all data didn't clear it. I kept him there 'til gone 6pm as I wasn't prepared to simply leave my data on the phone! In the end I manually binned 'people' data (select all->delete) and set a 12 digit pin on the handset to prevent anyone accessing it.

I've also blocked it via htcsense.com.

Now, I've registered the new phone at htcsense.com & I'm trying to restore my People & Messages from htcsense.com (it's all still there) & can't find any way to do it...

Any suggestions? There's no documentation anywhere that I can find.
 
Just to say that I've never seen this problem myself, even though my serial number is one of those that could be affected. Never saw the problem before or after the OTA update. In fact tonight I was out making a call and actually checked/noticed that the display switched off when by my ear, then turned on again. You can notice out of the corner of your eye in the dark. All was fine.

Read the Daily News item and I'll agree with one of the things they theorise. It is definitely cheaper to fix things via the SW route than have to re-spin hardware. I used to work for a graphics chip designer and if a problem was reported to us that turned out to be in the HW and mean a re-spin to fix *properly* we would do all we could to provide a SW fix. The customer, of course, wasn't told this .....

oh no, there is a problem already?
I'm planning to get the Desire HD and was really excited about it all but this is slightly disappointing. Should I just wait then until things are sorted before getting one?
I've never used a smartphone before, so the screen going blank is the least i want to happen as i wouldn't know how to fix it.
The reason for getting a smartphone is i thought they are meant to be 'smart'.
I hope HTC will come out with a quick and effective fix for this problem as I'd really want to get this phone soon.

it is most likely a hardware fault. What the latest HTC update did was not correct the problem, but somewhat alleviate it by allowing us to bring the screen back on by pressing the power button. Before the update, pressing the power button did nothing.

I was like you, thinking not to get it until the issue is sorted, but in all honesty i can deal with it (if mine has the issue). I've been waiting 1 year for my first android phone, and i really can't wait much longer! Im expecting Handtec to dispatch this week :D
 
My Experience:

Received phone from Vodafone Store via online upgrade 25/10/10
Experienced this issue when making/receiving calls, very annoying.
Downloaded software update over Wi-Fi 26/10/10 through phone and seems it is resolved the call making dead screen issue.

I fixed the issue on my handset by updating the firmware and blowing the sensor a few times. Since then no issues with it at all. Hope this helps
 
Hi guys,

As I have posted on XDA, the proximity issues seems hardware related indeed.
I now have my third DHD and everything is working fine for 2 weeks of heavy business use, without any problems.
The build quality of this third DHD definitely is better than the first two I had. No gaps above the screen and above the SD / SIM cover, camera lens is well placed behind the protective shield.

Got my first DHD 19 october, returned it within a week and changed my second last week of october for the third handset that now is flawless.

Indeed, as I read earlier on in this thread, first off models often do have issues.

hey dude, thanks for the above, im about to receive my DHD tomorrow, so i know at least what to look for. are the gaps that obvious to spot? :S

can you post a pic of these gaps and the camera thing as mine has a slight gap round the sreen and the sim/sdcard end has a gap.
also what you said about camera there is a slight offset of the piece inside would you say that this is a first batch and should maybe return phone??

proximety sensor proble has never been a thing on my phone and all goes great
