I got att to send me a replacement phone. I had an issue where when I lost signal for an extended period of time the phone stopped searching and acquiring a signal even when I was in an area with a strong signal.

The replacement phone came and iwas updated JH firmware. GPS works much better on this one Inside my house I have satelites in 8 view locked on 6 and decent signal mid high 30s and accuracy of 16 feet - 32 feet.

Pretty good google navigation worked great other than some odd route selections.

Overall pretty happy.:)

Unfortunately the GPS is the large factor for me. I use it to run routes and tracks in the backcountry. Having something flaky wont do it for me. However, when AT&T makes their store switch here in late December, I may give it a try for the 30 days and see what happens. Right now I am inclined not to take a chance though.

GPS on this device is NOT fixed. There are, however, a handful of people who GPS works for. No one has an explanation for that, but on the majority of Galaxy S devices the GPS does not work. Samsung even admitted that GPS was not fixed in the JH7 update.
You can try getting the phone and use it for 30 days and see if you're one of the lucky ones and GPS works. HTC Aria on AT&T gets very good reviews and is a fully functional phone, but of course with a not as nice of a screen compared to Captivate and weaker specs.
Is AT&T your only choice for a provider? Because other providers have much wider variety of Android phones.
Personally, I would love to get my hands on HTC Droid Incredible.

i'm on my sixth captivate mine have turned off called people on there own att sucks and i came from metro pcs I thought if I learned about the phone and got a good one i'd be ok but everyone seems to be having problems

usually after you get an new phone the gps will work flawlessly for first few days, then it will crap out like every other phone. I think samsung doenst know how to fix the gps issue.

My captivate was bought last night. I had my GPS disabled, so I turned it on outside and hit Maps, took 62 seconds to lock on. Every time after it took 9-12 seconds to lock on, including after I went inside to lose the lock and going back out.

Some have reported the GPS working better after the update with the same phone, so how is this a hardware issue? Also, many had great results after changing the settings.

Most people did not get improvements. So if the software is identical on all these hundreds of phones, but we see variation in behavior, how is it not hardware since that's the only remaining difference?

Also, many had great results after changing the settings.
Actual GPS doesn't use "settings". This has been explained in-detail ad nauseum in these forums, so I'm not going to repeat it again for this thread.

Okay, let me see how it works after some days and I will report back. Unless it won't cause you nauseum :).

I stopped reading this sticky a while back because of a rampant lack of agreement on just about every aspect of the GPS issue.

Has there been any consensus among forum members regarding the problem's cause and potential for resolution or, 682 posts later, is this still elusive?

appears to be a consistent thread for lack of agreement, but I assume this is due to the different experiences people are having with gps function.
I am one who initially did not have a good working gps but now it works great. Only thing I did was OTA update to JH7. I am not the only one satisfied with the gps, but there are still lots who are not satisfied. Maybe even the tech people at samsung don't know what the issue is.:)

Getting Aria's to replace my two Blackberry Curves. The issue though is that I want a phone with a working GPS, and 720p video capture.

Yes AT&T is my only real choice right now We do have Verizon, but I refuse to do business with them. I got screwed hard by them after I was a customer for 6 years so they are out.

I agree, the Incredible is just that. Going to keep hoping AT&T releases a better droid handset. Otherwise I will probably drink the Kool Aid and go Apple.

Well, good luck with everything. By the way, you won't get a free turn-by-turn directions functionality on iPhone, you'll probably have to pay extra for it. I don't see AT&T releasing a good Android device until they lose their exclusive rights to iPhone.

No consensus. This thread wasn't stickied because it contained useful info. It was stickied because of all the people who didn't care about GPS bitched enough to get the mods to just merge every topic that had anything to do with GPS into one bloated and useless thread. Effectively giving all those who do care about the GPS the finger... heaven forbid that they should legitimately want to discuss various separate GPS-related topics in an organized manner.

Next all the people who don't own Captivates will petition to have all the Captivate discussions merged into one massive thread since having a sub-board is too difficult/confusing.

Thankfully I dont need turn by turn. I use my GPS in the back country for logging routes and waypoints. It also contains my trip descriptions, MP3 player, etc etc. :)

My Google maps in showing me that I am sitting in a park across the street, while I am sitting at my office. More funnier is, its moving my statis position from inside of park to the street. While I am sitting at one position on my desk.

When i was at home yesterday, it showed me in my neighbour's house.

Is that the GPS problem everyone is concerned about? I didnt even dared to use navigation after this. ;)

Got phone few days ago.

Sitting in the park is better than sitting in your office.

Being in your neighbor's house could very well prove more interesting than being at home.

What's the problem?

That's normal for the Galaxy S :p:p:p

Hopefully you tried it outside...

But, yes GPS accuracy can be a problem for these phones. Worse when driving/during navigation.

is anyone with 2.2 beta having issues with gps, i know 4 people locally with bad gps' before and great gps' after, which points to one of two things:

1) its all (mostly) software based

2) our hardware gps' all decided to fix themselves at the same time we flashed 2.2

im just really interested in how mine could be so horrible, and so good after the update but im being told again and again that the update couldn't have fixed it. Im locking on 7 satellites inside my office building right now (weeks and weeks after flashing 2.2)

problem is when my starting point is not correct. How to navigate? I tried navigation for walking direction. I was standing on trinity pl and it was showing I am on broad way. anyways I calculated the way, and started walking, but it was stuck there as it highly inaccurate.

Thanks for the chuckle. I get such a kick out of reading posts where people are using GPS to guide them from their front door to their mailbox or have a zillion locks on satellites IN their offices. "Like, where's the men's room, dude? I wound up in the ladies room had to sit down to pee!"

Yes, I know these are just "tests," but funny nonetheless.

LOL. yvw. I get what you are saying buddy. But I don't have car and I don't use GPS at all. But after reading all this complaints about GPS i thought to test it.
Also it distance i calculated was not so less like from home to mailbox or looking for men's room. It was pretty long about 2 miles walk. are you saying this satellite lock thing doesnt work for small distance?

Also my point was my current location. If the GPS is working fine, does it shows your exact postion? because my friend's iphone shows it. I am not much into GPS thing. But just playing around, want to see if my GS works.

Any help will be appreciated !!! :)

>>> I am not much into GPS thing.

Neither am I. Another member will need to jump in. I'm leaving the thread before I write something I won't regret.
