Telus users can grab it from here.

I don't know what HTC thought you meant, but I don't think the market or google are in any way involved in OTA updates.

Telus users can grab it from here.

Grab what? As far as I can tell, that is a link to the user guide for the update and the sync software.

Anyone having a problem with the update? I was FLOORED to see my phone advising me of the update but when I try to install it, it stops part way through and throws up a large yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it and stops. REALLY frustrating going form excited to disseminated. As far as I can tell, it seems to be having a problem verifying the file it downloaded. Anyone able to shed some light on this?

So according to HTC, me rooting my phone is causing the OTA update they provided to fail. I was under the impression that rooting was one of the steps along the way to installing a custom ROM. I didn't get as far as actually installing a ROM, ran into problems before that. Can you simply "unroot" a phone and if so, how?

What did you do to the phone? Did you replace the recovery image?

What error messages does it give you when you try to do the OTA update?

Hello

Has anyone tried to root Telus Hero 2.1? I'm concerned that it may be been "fixed" by Telus and HTC to prevent rooting. Especially interested in knowing if Universal Androot works on it (as it does with 1.5).

Thanks

I think rooting works just fine on 2.1. There should be some people on Telus who rooted 2.1 who can answer that for you.

Lots of 1.5 firmwares were patched, not just Telus, but none of the 2.1 ones seem to be.

Eep. Ok, about a month ago I TRIED to update to 2.1 myself using a guide from XDA developers. I ran into problems half way through, the point where you had to restart your phone in safe mode by holding down two buttons I think to bring up recovery mode. Pretty sure I stopped around there. I know I did root the phone using Universal Androot.

Sorry, not sure what you mean by replacing the recover image.

The error message I am getting is "Failed to verify whole-file signature"

With regards to the rooting part, I was under the impression rooting was one of the steps on the way to installing a custom ROM. I did not acutally install a new ROM, only rooted it.

The recovery menu you were trying to access by holding down two buttons (home + power) is not found on stock phones (there is a stock recovery menu, but you were trying to use a custom one). So you have to flash custom a recovery image first, then you go on to use the recovery menu to flash a custom ROM.

The only thing the custom recovery images can't flash is official firmware, which would explain why you couldn't install the OTA update.

So I'm guessing you flashed something to your phone (or at least tried to) that was called amon ra. Is that right?

Man I'm sorry, I'm not being very helpful here as this was a little while ago. What I should do is try to find that guide I was using and try to figure out what point I got to. I know for sure I didn't flash anything. pretty sure I hadn't even downloaded a ROM at that point. As far as I know, the only thing I did do successfully was root it using Universal Androot. I've since tried to Unroot it hoping that would help but sadly it didn't.

That command you couldn't get to run is what flashes your custom recovery menu. But if it says clockwork, then you're already running a custom recovery menu :)

You're actually almost there when it comes to rooting. All the hard stuff is done.

Hmm,well I guess I should try again. I think I"m going to try to get back to stock first. Failing that I guess I have no choice. Man that was some bad timing.

It's up to you.

But you're like 90% of the way there with rooting, if that's what you want to do :)

Looks like all you need to do now is pick a rom and flash it on to your phone. Flashing roms is the fun part ... don't give up now.

Im a telus hero user, i have 2.1 loaded now from the update. Is this Froyo? does this mean I can load apps to my mem card now?

No, there's not going to be any 2.2 for any of the heroes.

We've pretty much had it when it comes to updates.

Damn,

space is getting short on my phone, and it would be great to use all the space availabe in my phone with the sd card.
