I think they did that to make it harder for an accidental in-pocket activation and dial (or send sms) - which I've been seeing people complain about.
I think this is a classic example of 'no matter what you do, somebody is going to be upset'. The way it originally was it was too easy to accidentally call or sms someone with the phone in a pocket or purse. The only way to fix that problem was to make the swipe more particular about exactly how it's done.
An option is to press the menu button rather than swiping. If you start using that, you won't notice that the swipe is 'wrong' now.
It would be better if there was an option to use the swipe either way you'd like. I can't imagine that would be a difficult option to include. I prefer the old method. With the new one, it takes me a couple tries sometimes because I'm not used to it yet 
I posted this in another thread, but might as well say it here too: Battery life seems more accurate now (not sure about "improved" yet). I've been unplugged for a little over an hour, and I'm at 96%. Normally by this time, I'd be at around 80%, but then the rest of it would go down very slowly. Not sure what exactly is different, but I hope it is actually an optimization improvement

I did the manual update early this morning.My chief complaint was the phone kept jumping from 3g back to 1 and sometimes id lose service completely. It was driving me nuts. The back up went smooth as silk. Even easier thena blackberry os wipe, which i did for years before switching to the eris. The update completely fixed the problem. The phone does not do that anymore and Ive noticed better batery performance. I suspected all along that was the culprit for me, the constant jumping back and forth. The phone responds quicker now to. So for me, the update was worth it. I did the manual because I got tired of waiting for the notification to show up.
People like you are so picky. Be happy with your damn phone, one reason I hate having a job that makes me deal with customers because I have to deal with people everyday that think there entitled to something. HTC WILL release the update just be patient like the rest.

I'm anxious to get my update and hopefully remedy the 1x/3g problem, but I'm with you, I don't get some of the complaints I'm reading. We all bought the phone with 1.5 on it. I don't think Verizon ever said that 2.x is guaranteed. Whatever else we get in the future is just gravy. I'm going to enjoy what I have because that is what I purchased.

Damn.....that's a little harsh. If you can't handle dealing with different personality types, you might want to find a different line of work. The fact is, anytime you have any kind of sales/customer service job, your customers are always going to feel slightly entitled because they're paying YOU for a service.

i noticed the same problem with getting the screen swipe to work after turning it on. but found that you have to swipe on the bottom half of the screen for it to work. easy enough.
also, i think that the battery % listed on the settings might be misunderstood. That number isn't the percent of the battery remaining or anything like that. what it seems to me is the percentage of time since the phone was turned on that it has been in use. it has absolutely nothing to do with how much battery is being used or is remaining. just how long the phone has been active compared to how long its been turned on..

I've already posted this elsewhere but it bears repeating. I tested my pre updated version on screen swipe. It only activated on the bottom half, starting on the Verizon Wireless lettering. I updated tonight and retested it. It's the same.
Sometimes I think we dream up this stuff to complain about. Now to see if the battery life is any better!

I think there is a slight difference in the swipe after the update. Like you said, we now have to swipe on the bottom half of the screen. Prior to the update I could swipe from anywhere. Hardly a big deal, and I am interested to seeing of anything else has changed.

Yes, that's the awake time %.
However on the same screen, there is also a battery remaining percentage.
Tools -> About Phone -> Status.
Both are in there.

The biggest difference for me is the MMS now resizes pictures when sending them. The battery seems to be doing better, but I didn't have to much to complain about before the update.

Screen unlock swipe is definitely different after the update.
Before the update I could start swiping at the top on of the screen and work my way to the bottom. It wouldn't start to drop until my finder hit the grey bar.
After the update I have to START at the gray bar and go down. If I start at the top and go all the way down like before the update nothing happens. Even if I continue wiping past the gray bar.

For those that don't like the swipe to unlock feature. Go to the Market and download the "Screen Mode Widget" and use the second option called "awake stay". It looks like a half moon with a circle and line through it(like a no smoking sign). Then all you have to do to unlock the phone is press the end button. You do have to re-set it everytime you power off then on your phone.
