Lg lied about update

If you honestly believe anything you just typed-you haven't got a clue as to how business operates. VERIZON is the one that has the final say as to what gets put on the phones that VERIZON sells, and it's quite possible that for Froyo to be released for the Ally, some of the "bloatware" VERIZON apps are having to be recoded to function properly 100% of the time. We all know that VERIZON has a clear bias toward their "rockstar" Droid line, and those devices get priority for updates, etc.

The reply said, "our technians and Google". It never said anything about Verizon. First rule of business, read thoroughly.

Regardless of who your customer support person asked (and thus "have not confirmed" that we'll get the update), Verizon IS the last word on what updates are pushed. Yes, LG develops the update from a Google base, but then it is passed on to Verizon who will (possible, eventually) push it.

Trust me, as a Palm Pre owner who waited wayyy too long while Verizon sat on the 1.4.5 update Palm had already given them, Verizon is a bottleneck just like LG.

Although, there is still no word on whether LG has even finished their 2.2 rom and passed it to Verizon...

The difference would be in the CPU architecture. The Ally uses an Qualcomm MS7627, and the Optimus/Vortex uses the OMAP 3630.
From my understanding, the OMAP processor has quite a bit more capability than the MS7627.

I think it's the opposite regarding CPUs for 2.2. Qualcomm CPUs seem to benefit much better than OMAP CPUs from Froyo as seen in Nexus One and Droid X. Also are you sure that new LG android phones have OMAP processors? You got any source?

You could be right on the benefits seen, but CPU capability is CPU capability, and if what I've been reading is correct-the OMPA CPU is just simply more powerful at the same clock speeds as the Qualcomm found in our Ally's.
Here's a good reference that I've found to be accurate:

Thanks for the reference on it. Interesting, I didn't know that LG put OMAP processors into Optimus/Vortex phones.
Still not sure if OMAP is more capable processor than Qualcomm as you say. If I remember correctly, Nexus One with 2.2 got better benchmark results than DX with 2.2. Also the T-mobile G2 with new 800MHz qualcomm snapdragon CPU outperforms most other 1GHz mobile CPUs from I have seen. Don't know if the OMAP processor in these new LG phones is newer than ones used in Motorola Droid phones.

OMAP vs. Qualcomm isn't the same as THIS OMAP vs. THIS Qualcomm. In this specific case, I *believe* he's right.

He may be right for this specific case, CPUs in Ally and Vortex. But I was questioning his assertion that OMAP is more capable than Qualcomm in general because the benchmark results I've seen indicate otherwise. It's possible that only the high end Snapdragon CPUs from Qualcomm are very capable.

Anyway, It's good to see that Vortex is coming with 2.2. I also noticed that its RAM size is 512Mb, twice of Ally's. It's still not in the league of Droid X, Fascinate, but good improvement from Ally.

I saw on another site (can't remember which) that the update will come after Christmas -or- that LG is going to release an update taking us to Gingerbread (Android 3.0)

Either way, I'll be happy if they just get 2.2 out to us. At least there are a boatload of fixes for the Ally in 2.2. I'd like to see what 3.0 has in it
Are you serious? We can barely run 2.1 without the system bogging down. And you think they will give us gingerbread? We are lucky if we even get 2.2 and it works without freezing all the time.

The Android OS is not Windows.
Nothing says that newer versions of the Android OS require more powerful hardware. That's what so nice about Android.

I agree. Android 2.2 would manage, use memory more efficiently. So it won't be problem to run it on Ally.

Those of you feeling Ally is sluggish better try out Launcher Pro and set it to default screen theme, move your widgets to it. My Ally feels nearly twice faster with this.

go to the XDA develpers website. the ally and optimus both have the same processor in them, if you look on that site it will give you alot of good info

As pointed out by Johnny, Vortex has OMAP processor although Optimus line seems to have the same MSM(Qualcomm) processor. Spec wise the new LG phones don't look like big step forward from Ally other than having froyo 2.2. And their screen resolution is lower than Ally at 480X320.

Since I got my Ally in mid September, I see the bunch news on new android phones coming up on nearly weekly basis. I was thinking of switching to Droid 2 or Fascinate when I didn't feel good on Ally's battery and speed. But over time the battery has gotten better, lasting one full day under medium usage just fine with some setting adjustment. The screen responding speed got significant bump after putting Launcher Pro on it too. Still not like other 1Ghz super-phones, but got quite closer in screen response. It doesn't make sense to spend another +150 dollars to switch those phones. So I decided to keep Ally for my current contract. One big advantage of Ally that's often overlooked is that it's the only Android phone on Verizon with stock vanilla android interface though still at 2.1.

Rumors, too many of them.

1. If LG didn't say it was coming out at that time then its just a rumor.
2. Gingerbread isn't 3.0 its 2.3 and is only for tablets.
3. Our phones may get 2.2 but it will not have full flash as our processors aren't supported. Maybe Flast Lite?

Sorry about the version mixup. Thanks for clearing that up.

I wouldnt appologize for that i have heard that 2.3 is in being used as the tablet based os and 3.0 is the phone based os but both are gingerbread

Welcome to the Android Forums. :] I hope you stick with the Ally. It may not seem all that great stock-wise, but I recommend you check out the All Things Root forum (this is the "dark side," btw :D ).

the forum is great!

Now that LG released their Optimus/Vortex line of android phones with 2.2. I wonder why they don't bring 2.2 to Ally as well. The CPUs in Optimus S, T are the same one as in Ally. So there is no reason why Ally can't get 2.2.

Maybe their development team doesn't have enough knowledge and they don't want to admit it. Who knows? The phone is pretty good. Although it's lagging behind my keypresses right now. And I touch type.

If LG/Verizon don't get 2.2 out for Ally by the end of this month, I might switch to Vortex coming soon. It's got twice the RAM 512Mb, android 2.2 and Optimus phones seem to be well received by reviewers. My only gripe is going down in screen resolution from Ally's WVGA to HVGA in Vortex.

My Response,

Yes I actually tried to call you yesterday. I have sold quite a few vs740's to many customers wanting a good android phone at reasonable price and I'm getting multiple phone calls per week with customers being upset. They are now wishing they had bought a more high end android that got the android froyo update. Can you advise the timeline for me to tell them when to expect the update? Thanks for your help

Response Back,

Unfortunately the Ally does not support version 2.2 Froyo and it will not update to it in the future. We will be launching the Vortex very soon and it will come with version 2.2. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help with the Ally.

Vortex is actually QVGA.
