Help HTC Desire - Internal Memory Capacity Issue

Even one gig like on the X10 would help my worries about running out of space for applications, or the ability to install to the SD without rooting.

I wondered how much the Sony Ericsson X10 had after seeing around 500 MB internal memory free on a fresh phone that came with Android 1.6, plus whatever Sony added to it (Timescape, etc.).

I love my HTC Desire, but the internal memory is pitiful.

Ugh just got the message tonight, I don't have alot installed and less than 14MB left. My Motorola has less internal storage and still 105MB after a few dozen apps, I hope 2.2 fixes the partition sizes.

Largest app I have is Swype at 17MB, everything else is 3MB or less (mostly ~1MB).

It's disappointing only having 148 MB of internal memory available to use when other phones have got 2 GB. Why were HTC so stingy with internal memory on the Desire?! It doesn't take many apps and their associated data and cache to use it up.

Such a long thread ans still no solution ...... I have rooted desire 2.2 and have moved as much apps to SD card as the OS allowed, but I still am running shot of internal storage. I got like 30MB of apps that couldnt be moved to SD. Assuming 50MB is used for the "other" stuff I still should be lef with atleast 70-80 Mb, but all I have is 15MB free :( ........ still looking for a solution .....

Same problem, HTC Desire with 2.2., almost all apps moved to SD with Titanium and still just 15MB of space available.
I clean something all the time, I have no idea how to find where the space has gone.

Presumably you've ordered the apps by file size in Manage Applications?

Yeah, I used that to check, but as I said, almost all apps are on SD. Just a few are left internally: task manager, call recording, keyboard. So it's not really helpful to see where the internal space has gone. I also used Cache Mate to clean the cache and I cleaned Dalvik cache. The phone is rooted with Froyo 2.2.
I understand that there are few hundred of contacts (without pictures), bookmarks (just a dozen), but still, out of 150MB, there should be some 50MB at least. With 15MB free, I can't install new apps.
All apps were installed to phone first and then moved to SD with Titanium because just a few supports transfer themselves.

Ah ok. I haven't used Titanium. I presume you definitely know that they've been moved onto the SD card? Just out of curiosity you could delete a couple of apps on the sd card to see if this frees up some memory on your phone. If this doesn't work then it sounds like you've got something on your phone memory that isn't being reported in the applications. Not something I've heard of before.

I checked with RockPlayer, which takes around 13 MB. It's not important whether I use Manage Applications or Titanium: approx. half goes to SD and that's the problem, 6-7MB which remains in internal storage. Why?

I think unless you're using a2SD+ on your rooted rom, you will still see much of your internal memory taken up. Even then you will still have a little bit on Internal.

I don't know why Rock Player needs to use internal when it's on the SD card, but other apps probably leave traces for running services and widgets.

You can see a drop in performance if you force apps to the SD card if the dev hasn't added this feature to the app itself. In some cases of forced moves, apps that update on startup or have widgets can often stop working at all.

Titanium / Froyo "move apps to SD" all leave the dalvik Cache behind on internal.

Also, since rock player is using the hardware to run and decode media on the SD card, it would make sense that it is on internal memory.

Rockplayer on internal memory interfaces with the hardware directly reading media from the SD card, through the BUS interface

rockplayer on SD card interfaces with hardware through BUS interface, reading media from SD card through BUS interface.

Considering the BUS interface on SD card will be slower than direct from internal, you are doubling slowdown by using the SD BUS twice, instead of once.

I can't believe you can't store apps to the SD card!!!

What brain of britain made this decision? Is it to stop sharing paid for apps?

I'm down to 10mb. What a joke. I don't want to root my phone as it could well feckit up, I'm not chancing it. Ridiculous. When, if ever, will this Hiroshima scale problem be fixed??? I'm not amused, even though I'm watching family guy...

Hey guys i have another problem which is my HTC Desire keeps running out of memory without me doing anything to it. It just sits still and all the sudden the lack of memory sign shows up. I have moved all the apps (that i am allowed to) to the sd card.

With this problem comes the sync problems with Gmail, Mail, Market and Talk. Does anyone know why this is? I'm getting quite annoyed with this, given that it still has more than 14mb of memory! BTW, how is this a lack of memory? I don't see why the apps won't load due to this!

Also i find no Cache in ANY app, none of the ones in the SD card or the Internal Memory.

I have e-mail HTC but no reply yet. Sorry if this topic has been covered before.
Also i have a Mac so i can't do the handy trick of forcing the apps to move to the SD card, which really sucks.

I would love to have 32GB of RAM on my computer!!! I know apple delievers a mac pro with 32GB RAM if you add 3550$ on the basic price :-)

"App 2 SD" you can move your downloaded apps to the ass-d card.

I found this somewhere and instead of 10MB, voila, I had 40MB on internal storage:
"I just deleted the contents of the "/data/local/tmp" folder, because every app I installed had a copy there!!!"

How did you find "data/local/tmp"? I'm using OI file manager or Astro. Would not powering the phone off/on clear a tmp folder?
I'm new to both android and the HTC desire. I was concerned before getting it about the memory issue, but as I use GPS alot and the alternative was the Galaxy S(which may have GPS problems) I went for the desire. Mine is locked to Orange in the UK, and runs 2.2. I was surprised at the number of large apps(co-pilot, Skype) that can't be transferred to the SD card. Is there any way of forcing them? I've read a bit about rooting, but am concerned I might "brick" my new phone. Can anyone point me to a site gives pros, cons and risks of rooting? Will it allow apps that currently don't offer "move to sd card" to be moved?

Dont know if this applies but I had a problem with a portable storage device for backing up files. Unit was 500gb capacity. when I first came to use it straight out of box brand new capacity stated was 465gb. \contacted makers and they stated that the unit worked in binary numbering not decimal hence the discrepancy but there was 500mb of storagewhen I started to store files etc. Wonder if same system applies with phone ram and rom

For Hard disk manufactures 500GB is equivalent to 500,000,000,000 bytes, but to a operating system (Windows for example) 500GBytes = 500 x 1024MBytes (1 MByte = 1024KBytes / 1KByte = 1024Bytes / 1B = 8bits) So if you get 465GB it is because the OS will divide 500,000,000,000B / 1024 = 488,281,250KB / 1024 = 476837MB / 1024 = 465GB

This applies to all system which runs on the 8bit / 16bit law...hex... =_=

I'm a bit puzzled by my internal memory as well.

I'm not rooted, and using the "app2sd" app, as well as "Quick App Clean Cache" (in the past I would just do it by going into manage all applications myself.

When I go into app2sd it tells me I have 147 MB total internal memory and have 21 MB free. But when I add all the apps I have on the internal phone memory it adds up to 70. Doesn't that mean I should have about 70 MB internal memory free?

In "manage all applications" the only other app of a significant size is "save contact" at 6.5 MB, nothing else looks significant.

Is this normal? It's not cache building up anywhere (that I can see anyway).
Whenever I go down to 14-15 MB internal memory I get the "low memory warning".

Hi danielvago

Exactly the same issue here and I am splitting my hairs to see what can I do at all, to let me have some decent memory. Following are the only Apps I have on Phone memory which take more than 1 MB each in size:

Adobe Flash Player 10.96 Google Maps 9.19 HTC_IME mod 5.45 Shazam 4.45 Gmail 3.73 YouTube 3.64 Android Market 3.04 Lookout 2.26 Skype on 3 1.35 TrainTimes UK 1.34 HTC Sync 1.21 eSpeak TTS 1.07
Besides these, I have 16 Apps of varying small sizes, totalling 6.376 MB

In total, 54.066 MB. I have no idea on what further could one do, besides dumpting the Desire on eBay or to the bin. Having paid some

I know it sounds drastic and you've probably heard it before....

...and I don't suggest this lightly. I don't want to get people who don't need to do this doing it....

But rooting really gives a lot of options for reclaiming space.

This app called DiskUsage can help. It shows exactly whats on your internal memory, in an easily observational method, and gives the option of deleting stuff. Sometimes an app will install part of itself on your internal memory, even though you've moved it to SD / deleted it.

This app is called Quick App Clean Cache and rocks. It shows if any apps have cache, and works as a quick way to clean your cache. Especially the new market creates insane cache for me. 5 seconds in market and I have 1 MB of cache.
