Help HTC Desire - Internal Memory Capacity Issue

actually i don't know how much longer this "issue" of storing apps only in internal memory can last, however it started since G1 and up to now google hasn't done anything to tackle this problem. if you see other android phones have similar amount of memory and that's why developers can't create better apps as they know that most of android devices don't have big internal memory (ROM), however, samsung galaxy owners (including me) never had problem with memory as we had 8gb internal memory and all apps can be installe to that memory. so maybe someone could check how samsung did it and apply it to desire so that device would think that its internal memory without rooting and putting apps2sd
well haven't received my desire yet but already thinking that 500 mb of memory is a bit too low as my galaxy's memory is full since day one :)

Developers worth half their salt know how to store most of their data on the memory card. Case in point: ExZeus has over 57 MB. It takes up about 3 MB of internal storage.

I 'm litle lost here, can't you install apps in the sd cards and let the rom and ram besides ?

No you can't.Apps are installed on rom and bad thing is you don't have 512mb of rom for your apps.
It's about 100mb free,as the other ~400mb are used for the android and the sense, which are also installed there.

makes me glad the samsung i9000 (yes android) is coming with 8/16gb internal memory :) Thats the App storage problem solved right there!

Yeah one of the downsides of android phones. Certainly puts a hold on gaming the android

Sure I read somewhere that this was due to the encoding or encryption of either the apps or the phone which only allowed them to be installed on internal memory, whatever the size of that may be. Google is looking at ways to have them installed on external memory however.

Personally I dont see a problem with 100 mb or so of free space for apps, I'll deal with it. And if im using all of it up, then it means I'm either installing useless junk or im using my phone /way/ too much.

I've rooted and enabled apps2sd on my previous Android phones, but I really can't be bothered with this one. If you run out of space for apps then just delete some of those apps that you have only looked at once.

141mb is plenty.

I think Google will fix this if they announced it back at the launch of the nexus one, altho we not heard anything else since so we can hope it will be sorted for android 2.2 :)

What about sat nav progs like copilot and Tom tom. I would have thought that they will take up an enormous amount of memory with all the maps.

No, only the program is run on internal memory, the maps (data) are stored on the SD Card.

Hardly, wont even install the World series of poker game due to lack of memory yet i have 60mb free.

I sent an email to HTC about this problem, asking if there will be an update to fix this issue and this is the response I got.

"Dear ray Thank you for contacting us. In regards to update I can help you with that. We can not comment on updates/devices that have not been launched publicly. We work hard together with our partners to bring the best out of our products. I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thank you for contacting HTC. Best regards, Terry S HTC"

Hehe what a thread. The HTC Desire looks like an aesthetically pleasing phone both internally and externally; I hope to upgrade my contract to receive one on the 14th! Just something to go over.

Is there really no significant internal storage? For example, the Nokia N97 has 32gb internal, but the Desire has nothing?? Of course you have up to 32gb MicroSD, but there's a difference.

as you all see this problem with Froyo (2.2) will be solved as apps2sd will be implemented in the system so it will be up to developers how to use this advantage and move apps to sd card instead of leaving them on internam memory.
yuhoo.. just depends how much time HTC will take to adapt sense ui to froyo.
i bet it will take long due to JIT and other interesting new features. oh well just wait and see :)

I must admit that the low amount of internal memory worries me somewhat.

Even one gig like on the X10 would help my worries about running out of space for applications, or the ability to install to the SD without rooting.

I have gazilions of apps downloaded and installed and have no memory problems with the Desire.

Anyway, with Android 2.2 you will be able move some of your apps to the SD Card space (they need to be written correctly to be able to be portable like this, so not all will be movable to start with).

I have just installed the 'System Manager Free' app. from the Android Market and with 1 press of the button 50mb of memory was freed. As the memory is RAM any running programs will fill this area- like PC ram is used to hold info that will be regularly used.

It will stop programs running that are not 'White Listed' so if you are running an antivirus you will need to restart it after the above action. Other that that I cannot see any other issues with it

You're confusing things mate, this thread is about internal storage space, not free memory.

Personally think it's absolutely disgraceful that the Desire is advertised as having
576MB internal space when in effect you only have around 150MB to play with. That's as much as my old Samsung Spica used to have! Am running out of space, I've moved as many apps as I can to the SD card but need to keep apps with widgets on the phone, otherwise the widgets stop working.

Tried clearing my cache, and only got 500kb back. There must be a better solution. Anyone?

Ram and Rom are different things.

RAM is what the phone uses for helping things work whereas Rom is where you store stuff. It's the Rom you need to look at for your storage needs.

Hope that helps
It isn't RAM related and 512MB RAM is plenty, it's the internal storage, supposedly 512MB storage yet when I installed 3 or 4 apps after the first time use it already said 60MB free, this problem is popping up everywhere on Android related forums. Hm according to Android System Info it says 147MB max, wth? Time to install App 2 SD when 2.2 arrives OTA.

My Motorola Quench has 256MB storage and has 105MB free and has TONS of stuff installed, and the Charm has 512MB and was around 390MB free.
