Help Odd code for text coming thru on received text msgs

The following code is coming in instead of regular text in my received text msgs. It's randomly coming in on various lengths of text on various people.

 
i'm having the same exact issue. i'm also rooted, here are my specs:

firmware: 2.1- update1
Kernal version: 2.6.29
build number: Calkulin's.ECLAIR.DD10

i haven't rooted in a while so these oddly coded texts may be attributed to an old/buggy ROM?
 
The exact same thing started happening to my phone this afternoon, too. Half of the texts I've received in the last few hours have looked liked the one in the OP's post.

BTW- My phone is completely stock.
 
Hmmm, mine started this afternoon as well, maybe it's a network thing? I'm going by Sprint in about 2 hours to find out, can't live w.o texts!!
 
Same here it started a few hours ago and only seems to be affecting incoming text so far. I am also running stock sprint moment using handcent SMS app.

Never had this problem before and its driving me crazy I can not live with text...!

I have tried rebooting the phone a few times which did nothing to fix the problem, even checking the stock SMS app that comes on the phone and it shows the same crazy stuff so it must be a network issue with sprint.
 
i had an idea that it might be network related since the phones affected were running either stock or rooted versions of android; that's why i held off on reformatting back to stock/reflashing a new ROM just yet.

Jinski13- hopefully your handset is all stock, requesting a phone to be serviced that's stock is one thing but, when people start coming in with issues attributed to phones that have been rooted/jailbroken, those situations are generally greeted with widespread eyerolls.

Yea thankfully it is stock, but with responses I've gotten here and other sites it's not a phone issue it seems like and even if it was I'm bad about putting low quality customer srv in its place.
 
Well it seems to be random because i am getting some text fine, but others are the strange symbols. I have tried both the stock sms app and handcent and both show the same problems.

I also noticed that for some reason my GPS icon keeps turning on and off in my notification bar...and i can't find any running services that would be using my GPS not sure if that has anything to do with this problem.
 
Ugh, I'm a sprint technician and my phone started doing this today, I dont work this evening or tomorrow so I'm unable to hop into the sprint forums because I believe I've seen a thread that said something similar to this and I think it is strictly related to the Moment but a coworker said something about it being a virus on someones network. What carriers are texting you the strange characters? I've had 2 from ATT and 1 from Verizon prepaid.
 
i've been having the same problem since this afternoon at about 3 pm. From people on Verizon and i believe at t. Also the only way mine starts working again is for me to reboot the entire phone then it works for about 5 messages and goes back to cryptic messages...very annoying. not even gonna bother to call sprint since i know they won't do crap
 
just spoke to coworkers and it seems that a lot of moments are coming in today with this issue....and there is no fix as of yet...so don't bother going in... i'll post something when I hear someting
 
that would be awesome. this is annoying having to reboot my phone every 5 texts just to be able to receive them normally
 
anything new on this? I also have a Sprint Moment, and this afternoon I started getting symbol texts. it's driving me nuts.

Im having the same problem with my moment. I text my husband and when he responed and it was all these weird things. I thought it was his phone until I just received a message with the same characters from a differnt person!

Went to the Sprint store was told by a tech that it's a known problem just started today, they're working on a fix. Said it's a network problem only affecting Moments *yay* so if you have anything other than a Moment I'd report it. I doubt I'll find out more, will update if I do.
