Not enough space (2.2 Froyo)

no idea where they are kept. Rather than factory reset have you considered clearing cache for each app manually?

Well think about it this way, assuming you have a PC (or Mac for that matter), the computer slowly fills up with data right? As you perform your daily operations things are cached, files are stored, applications write things to hidden system folders. This slowly, but surely consumes space. Although you can clear caches and go hunt down stray files, you're never quite capable of accounting for all the space used. However, this is not an issue on most modern computers, as, although they may slow down some, they have nice big hard drives.

The Desire also stores data here and there, and although you can clear app data and caches, it is impossible to really control every single file on your phone (without rooting and being very knowledgeable). My suspicion is that in addition to apps storing small amounts of data, the OS itself probably stores some as well. So, it makes sense that the phone would slowly but surely use up internal memory. And the big difference between the Desire and your computer is that kilobytes matter on the Desire. When you're talking storage in MBs those small insignificant little bits of data begin to add up, until eventually a few MBs of data is gone.

That's just my two cents on the issue, anyone with some in-depth knowledge feel free to chime in.

I like your analogy and it makes sense but as you said there's a vast data size difference. In the case of my phone it's taken 12 days to go from 38MB to 14.87, that works out to about 2MB per day. I'm pretty sure that's not the rate it's happening on other peoples' phones so that's why I think there's something wrong rather than it just being "normal".

Perhaps all of us with this issue use the same app which is storing data over and above the normal rate, who knows?

That is a crazy rate, I would say it must be a particular app that is storing a lot of data , because although mine has been slowly going down it has taken me a month to lose about 5 MB.

Agreed yes it's crazy. Clearly not everyone is having this issue which is why some people can't seem to get it in their heads how much of an embuggerance it is!

The list of apps I have is in the thread I linked to before so please let check it out if you have the same problem.

Please bear in mind, before anyone suggests it, I have cleared the cache of every app and it makes no difference.

To make it easier for people to find (or quicker)...
