Samsung Galaxy Tab--what would you change?

vargas

Newbie
I've had my Galaxy Tab for about two weeks now and I have to say that I am really happy with it. It has become my go to device for casual web browsing and information and I do take it with me just about everywhere I go. With that being said, there are a few things I wish were a little different about the device. I love it but hey, nothing is perfect, right? It should be noted that I am in the US and have ATT. Somethings change from carrier to carrier.

1. Camera--I'm surprised they only put a 3.2 megapixel camera in this when some of the Galaxy S phones and other newer devices that are considerably smaller have 5mp and above. 5 would be a minimum and 8 would be ideal.
2. More memory. I have the ATT tab that has 16gb internal and of course you can add up to 32gb with the micro sd but I woudl have lovd for 32 internal. Some applications can't be moved to the SD card (haven't rooted my device) and they take up some space.
3. NO PHONE--this is sort of a big issue for me and it sort of isn't. Obviously I have a primary cell phone that I wouldn't give up anyway but it would be nice to have the option. Plus, with everything being so integrated with Google Maps and Navigation, not having the ability to call your destination is sort of a downer. I know there are rumors that TMobile in the US will soon be allowing the phone function but I don't know how true these rumors are and if that will carry over from provider to provider.
4. MY ATT device, in my very limited ability, seems to be unrootable. It will not allow ANY application that isn't from the Android Marketplace so I can't download any .apk files such as Z4Root and run them. Some people can change their security settings (on different provider) but I cannot seem to do this. I'm sure I could do something with the Android SDK but I honestly don't know enough to do this and don't want to harm the device.
5. Can't close the browser. I can't close the browser without going into my Application manager and pressing the "end" button.

Those are most of my little things I wish could be change. Overall I'm thrilled with the device but of course, just wish for a little more.

What about YOU? What would YOU change?

home keys to stay on or adjust how long they stay on

iplayer app

and some better games, something like wipeout would work really well

Oh, forgot one in my original post---

USB slot. I get the proprietary connector. I do. I know they wnat you to buy their wonderful accessories and I will but I would have LOVED a usb port on the left side of the device.

I think that the non-USB connector was done so people didn't plug in a 700ma charger and then complain about the slow charging or worse, plug in the 2amp charger into a Blackberry and fry it.

I don't think they could have made all the accessories work with only 4 lines on a USB port. The keyboard dock would not have come close in my opinion. Now having said that, here are what I would have liked.

1) A keyboard dock that worked in Landscape as well
2) An IR port for remote control
3) A larger Internal storage like say 64gb at least. I know they want to milk the releases.
4) A manual camera button

I agree with you 100%... the only other changes I see is moving the power button to the top and placing the mic in a different location for people who use the tablet in a case. Perhaps, even stereo audio would be a plus too?

Completely agree. Whenever i record video from the camera in landscape my thumb always blocks the mic. Also i have hit the power button a million times when tryong to turn the volume up.

I would prefer if it had a less slippery surface! Sometimes it is difficult for me to hold on to it if I have even a little moist on my fingers.

I agree. I've got the Sprint tab & it's too slippery. I ordered a cheap silicone skin for it from Amazon the other day & can't wait to get it. Other than that, I think the tab's a great device. I played with the Verizon one & it's got a nice textured back on it.

Better camera, HD video, phone active on North American tabs, higher resolution screen.

The size I'm undecided on,
its just too big to carry in a pocket
and wondering if 5-6 inches might have been better than 7?

I agree we need more games overall for android, but also more that can use the fullness of the tab to its full potential.

Check around theres usually a coupon out there for aleast 30% off, i got mine 50% off , read the description they also include a screen saver (the best , you wont know you have it on.) and free shipping

I could care less about a screen protector myself, cause these glass screens are very hard to scratch. Had my evo since launch day & never had it in a case or used a screen protector & it doesn't have any scratches. Plus a screen protector isn't gonna save the screen from cracking if you drop it.

I'm considering a screen protector for mine, not to prevent scratches (I keep mine in a leather case) but to eliminate all the fingerprint marks.

My HTC Desire screen was also a fingerprint magnet but it was 100% better with a screen protector on it.

I think the tab could have been an inch or 2 bigger, its smaller and maybe even a bit better to carry around than an iPad, but I have an Evo and don't see a huge benefit to a tab compared to a pretty big smartphone. I say it could have used more real estate.

I think the tab has an awesome feel as I am using out now to type this message

I normally don't worry too much about the software issues because those can usually be solved by an update or by rooting but I am disappointed that they removed the phone functionality from the US version.

As for hardware, I would definitely like to see pentaband UMTS (850/900/1900/1700/2100) frequencies so it will have 3G capabilities on both AT&T and T-Mobile, as well as the rest of the world. It would also be great if the US version had a Digital TV tuner like the Brazilian G-Tab has.

Brazilian Galaxy Tab has digital TV tuner

Maybe we can all ask Santa Samsung for a code to unlock our devices? Rooting the US units is painful and slow to happen, sideways loading is not permitted and all I want for Christmas is a "rooted" SGT unit!!!

I want VOICE.

I want the Wifi to work reliably (have the wifi disconnect prob common to other andrid phones in the past)

Qik video chat causes my vid cam to orient picture sideways and have been unable to resolve.....I don't like this app anyway and would like for them to add Skype video capability.

I want the same ability that I have on my Blackberry to manually manage my wireless versus wifi connections. Yes, the tab has those settings too but THEY DON'T WORK! No matter what I set them to, this thing does what it wanst everytime I power down and back on. I suspect it is TMobile trying to force me to use their pay mobile network service versus my FREE wifi service.

I want to be able to totally kill an application witha "quit" function within the applicationa dn not have to use AppKiller or Task Manager to see what is still running and shut it down.

have tons more but gotta run...

For me wifi seems to work awesome, but I do agree I want voice...alto Qik got an update but it doesn't show so u got to go to the market and update manually(well that's how it works for tmobile version anyway.)

For all of the models, add a micro usb port and USB host (Fits on Elocity 7 with same footprint). Proprietary connectors suck. iPad is enough with that.

For the VZW version, but the 16gb in it.

No harm no foul, since my Gtablet has 16gb built in, Tegra 2, USB host, "free" wifi tether, no proprietary connectors and cost $350 :) That is modded of course, since out of box, it is nowhere near as good.

Galaxy is solid device, none the less.

How about for the Sprint variation, they not block bluetooth connections with my keyboard and mouse that work just fine on other variations?
