Help More Homescreen Icons?

My main homescreen has 4 x 4 = 16 icons. My old iPhone has 4 x 5 = 20 icons. Is there a way to add more icons to my main screen without rooting the EVO?I wouldn't mind making the icons smaller and add more of them on the main home screen.

Yes, you have two choices:

1) Use the multicon widget:

Multicon Widget - Android app on AppBrain

This will basically give you four icons for each 1x1. It works with any launcher.

2) Use a different launcher that will literally give you more rows and columns. The two most commonly used are Launcherpro and ADW, both of which give you the option to change the number of rows and columns.

I tried the LauncherPro....but it basically made my EVO slow down to a crawl. So I uninstalled it. Has anyone else experienced this or is it some kind of settings issue? Everybody seem to like the LauncherPro and I can't imagine they would if it slowed down their EVO like I experienced.

You might need to change the memory settings. Menu->Preferences->Advanced Settings->Memory Usage Settings. Try using a high memory usage preset, check use homescreen caches, and use normal homescreen caches. That should speed things up. The options are there for lower-end phones. If that doesn't help, install OS Monitor and see if anything is running hot.

its because sense launcher and launcher pro are both still running.

install launcher pro again. press home key and select use as default then choose launcher pro. now reboot your phone and only launcher pro will be running. your phone should run fine now. you will lose sense widgets with this. if you upgrade to launcher pro plus you can get similar ones back.

Done and works beautifully. Launcherpro is the much better solution to what I was looking for. And it's free!

now throw folder organizer into the mix...there are a ton of other useful "home helper" apps but I can't remember them all

That's because one gets released once a week, practically . The cool thing with the folder organizer and launcherpro combination is that you can put folders in the dockbar as shortcuts.
