Help Problem with groups and contacts.

My phone did a strange thing the other day. It ungrouped all my contacts.

I have about 100 or so contacts split into 6-7 groups. All my groups have their own ringtones.

I tried putting them back into their groups from the "not assigned " group, but I only get about 4 in their spots before it starts removing them and putting them back into "not assigned "

I'm up to date on my updates, and here's what I tried:
-restarting
-adding people from the" group" screen
-adding people separately to the group

The weird thing is there are a few contacts that didn't leave their groups. My wife's contact is still in "family" though she's the only one.

Any suggestions?

ok I tried deleting my groups and reassigning them. I made 1 group and put 22 people in it.

I went back to the home screen, then back to contacts/groups.

I actually watched the number count down from 22 to 0 as those contacts moved into the "Not assigned" group.

I have the contacts saved on the sim, imported to the phone. And I'm not sure about anywhere else.

I saw something about AT&T backing up my contacts, but I'm not sure where they go or how to see them.

and I don't know about gmail backing them up, not sure how to do that.

I'm not losing the contacts, just my organization of them.

and as far as syncing goes, I'm not sure how to check.

Also check page 62 of your user guide for steps - and I can't guarantee that AT&T didn't change this but -

Typically you can store your contacts via Google or locally to your phone. If on Google, once groups are set there, they stay set.

Hope that helps a little.

(you may also have Facebook contact sync active - that can get confusing as well)

Try adding a few contacts to the phone, then put them in groups. See if that sticks. Maybe importing from SIM has something to do with it, as SIM contacts are so limiting and won't allow for groups.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but the conversation is related to a question I have. Thinking about getting a Captivate but I currently have a Droid so all of my info is on Google. I know the Captivate is a Bing phone but my questions is, does your info (like contacts) get backed up to google like it does on a Droid?

Thanks in advance!

What do you mean "Bing phone"?

You have the option to back up your contacts to your Google/Gmail account if that's how you choose to set up and use your phone. There are upsides and downsides to this.

The Captivate FAQ (mentioned in the forum sticky) explains using contacts pretty thoroughly. Have you read that yet?

Thank you for the clarification! I obviously didn't know what I was talking about :p, my only Android experience is with Droids and someone told me that the Galaxy S line were Bing experience phones (similar to how Droids are Google experience phones), I now have no clue what the *** they were talking about lol. Thanks for the link, I'll read up.

SO I see that my contacts are being backed up on ATT address book.

I logged in over there, made groups and assigned contacts.

The ATT address book contacts updated on my device as I changed their names, so it was working. But the groups did not update. Nor did they become populated with the appropriate contacts.

I had issues with AT&T address book deleting parts and pieces, no rhyme or reason to it ... a group here, a number there, an anniversary, etc. It was annoying, and didn't seem to matter if I entered it on the phone or the site first, so I stopped the sync.

Yeah the "Droids" are just a product line of phones running Android. The Galaxy S phones (of which the Captivate is one) also run Android. All Android phones are "Google experience" (as you put it) phones.

Bing is a Microsoft search engine... presumably the default search for their Windows 7 phones but that's not the Captivate.

There are known (and admitted-to by AT&T) problems with the "AT&T Address Book" feature since the JH7 update. It'd be best to not depend on that and instead use other methods to back up your contacts.

I am having the exact same problem! I have just had the phone for a few days now and thought the groups were so easy, and better the iphone until they started disappearing.. great! So there is no solution yet?

I've stopped the automatic syncing, and so far they have stayed in their group for 5 minutes so far, which is a new record.

If it stays this way till the end of the week, I'll be sending you a "Thanks" for Christmas.

I am having the same problem with contacts staying in groups. I bought the phone in September and it was fine for a while. Then it started shutting down by itself several times a day. They (AT&T) had me do a soft reset and that is when I noticed the contact problem. The only ones that stay in a group are the ones with pics. At&T sent me a replacement phone which I took to the local store to be powered up and it too is having the problem with contacts as well as a myriad of other issues. I am so not happy with this phone. Their solution is to send me another refurbished phone.
One of the other problems I am having is that I can send a picture from the phone to my laptop via bluetooth but can't send from the laptop to the phone. It says the connection times out. Any ideas? THey certainly didn't.
