Help Seriously annoyed with failing updates

Member
My app updates have been failing for about three weeks now. I currently have about 15 outstanding updates - only about 3 programmes have managed to update. The majority of applications not updating are on the sd card, but not all. (I have not done that sd card APK thing)

The biggest problem I have, is that when an application fails it is on the install. It downloads first. I'm not entirely sure how the procedure works, but I lose space on the phone when I have a failed update.

I have now had to virtually uninstall every app I had on the phone that I can without losing user data. Even now I have only 14Mb free, yet I had more than that free and I'm about 5 or 6 apps lighter!

Can anyone please help here - is now driving me nuts! (HTC Desire BTW)

Cheers

Darius

Is your HTC Desire running Android 2.2? Were the apps installed to the SD card by the Android market? Or by an app like Apps 2 SD?

Clear both the APP DATA and CACHE of the following programs.

gtalk
gmail
market
market updater
stock calendar

This should force you to sign back into market, so make sure you have your credentials handy.

hi - they were installed via the phones standard software - the move to sd, move to phone option in settings/applications

no extra software

hi

I did that for the market only previously - it just asks you to agree to there terms and conditions again. it also brings back the previously failed updates - it must think they're updated whether the installation was successful or not.

I guess I better try clearing the other programmes caches etc. as I have run out of ideas!

Is there any software that would clean up unwanted stuff off the internal memory - as per one of the problems raised in my original post

does anyone know how to delete the downloaded apk files of failed updates as I now have no space in my phones memory and i have now uninstalled as many programmes as possible.

the problem unfortunately is still unresolved

Are you installing them directly to your SD card? I had the same exact issue. I didn't feel like troubleshooting, so I just reformatted the card and used Appbrain to reinstall all my apps (this could potenially suck if you have a ton, but I only have about 15, so no big deal).

I suspect my issue arose because I upgraded to a 32GB card and simply drag/dropped files onto the new card. I didn't move hidden files and there were files that windows 7 claimed had a path name that was too long and therefore did not transfer them. I am sure I did this all the wrong way, but the amount of data I had wasn't enough for me to warrant looking up how to do it right! LOL!

hi there

I didn't install them directly to the sd card and also the problem hasn't started after any particular change. in fact not all the problem programmes are on the SD card (the majority are but I think that's more because the majority are on there)

Interestingly, I got 'Tasker to update the other day.

I have just tried the following: -

With the game 'Sky Force Reloaded' which I have purchased - I moved it back to the phone and tried to update - it downloaded and then failed on the install

I then uninstalled it completely - the market shows it as purchased still. I tried to install again (to the phones memory) and it fails.

I have tried wiping the market cache and data, removing the battery and SD card. This is now driving me nuts!!!

Do you have a file manager? In astro I see those in the "asec" folder. Astro puts me inside the SD card by default. Just hit "up", and it should allow you to check other folders.

BTW when I deleted all the market cache and data, it did not ask me to sign back into the market. Is there anything else that needs deleting??

now astro won't install!!! If I could somehow get a file manager to install can I delete all the apk files in that folder. At the end of the day though, lack of room is just a symptom of the main problem that nothing will install, so I guess I need to probably just focus on that issue. It just makes it hard when you keep getting the low space notifier!

What sort of error is astro giving you?

You should be able to delete those files if you get astro working. I suspect the issue is with how the SD card is set up. For whatever reason (see my situation a few posts above), my SD card ended up being only mountable as read only. A format fixed this. There are other things you can try ( I was reading something about installing terminal and doing some manual editing through that, but decided not to mess with things, again because I just didn;t have enough data that I cared about and appbrain makes it really easy to redownload/install your apps). FWIW I was getting a specific error code (error 18), where a google search suggested the shell commands.

hi lordofthereef

I have found the fix - very bizarre - i think it may be the same as what you mentioned. A lot of the time i was getting this unknown error 18. Did some research on this and found this solution

"Alright found a fix. I hooked my phone up to my computer, browsed to .android_secure and deleted the file 'smdl2tmp1.asec'. Problem solved."

This has actually worked. I am now currently updating around 20 apps that I havent been able to for the last few weeks. I just hope I get some of the space back on my phone afterwards as I am 5 or 6 key apps down - such as Astro, IMDB etc.

This is definitely the fix for this problem as I have been messing for weeks - as soon as I deleted this file, everything started working again!

Thanks for the help reef - put me on the right track!

interestingly, now all apps have updated, I only have 10mb of space on phone and im about 4 apps down to my original list

Imdb
Astro file manager
Zombie run
Shazam

I had around 18-20mb before all this. - I guess 20 updates may have had an effect, but most of the apps were on the SD card
