Battery problems, quirks and issues: Read first.

No, I'm still with my first one... the BestBuy where I got it is pretty out of the way and the closer ones don't stock the Moment... so I have to get back out there... hopefully this weekend. I really wanted to build a case for replacement before I go and try... I would hate to just sound whiny lol. Plus I really like the guy that sold us ours (both me and the bf got one) so I'd like to deal with him again, he seemed really intelligent and reasonable. I was also going to try a hard reset to see what difference it made. Unfortunately I have to get my a** in gear as my 30 days are running out.

Looks like that day is today. I uninstalled Startup Auditor (both because I wanted to see if I'd notice any battery life difference with vs. without and because I had read that it can cause other issues) and the first reset after, my phone gets stuck in a boot loop on the Android logo screen. I'm not going to even bother trying to unbrick it, just going to take it to Best Buy and talk them into exchanging it... I can honestly say that I haven't installed anything not from the Marketplace, so I don't think they'll argue with me. I'll report back with how my new battery does.

Just get rid off snoopy applications like Weather channel which demands GPS always "on". This would drain battery fast. Replace it with some other reliable weather report widget which is not crazy about GPS snooping always.

quick update... four days with the replacement phone and my battery life is much better (maybe four hours more than the old one, which at least gets me through the day)... the only thing I'm doing different is using GDE instead of open home (which I doubt would cause any differences in battery life) and not using any task managers including startup auditor. Also not using Battery Left. I don't know what's causing the difference, but at least it's better.

I would have reported it, but honestly... right or wrong, it was so absurd it made me laugh. Let's face it, people are stupid, and stupidity is pretty damn amusing sometimes :)

Hi all - Long time reader but first time posting.

Have been reading and trying recommendations from the folks here on how to extend the battery life for my Moment for days and I think I can confirm at least one theory.

Based on a rec (by I think Zumaki?), I started to look at the %Running vs. % Screen On in Spare Parts and noticed that I have a huge disparity - I was running over 25% of the time, but my screen on was just around 3%. I started looking at what apps ran all the time, and ironically it was TasKiller and the Battery Meter Widget - the very programs I'd installed to try and extend my battery! That is to say, the battery meter was preventing my phone from sleeping and reducing my overall battery life per charge.

Anyway, I removed those two widgets from the desktop and the disparity between my run time and screen on time is down to 1%. I've now had the phone on for around 30hrs since my last charge and am at 30% battery life with moderate usage.

Thanks to everyone whose put the tips here on extending life and I hope that my anecdote is helpful to others - beware of adding on software to extend the bat life, if may just kill it itself!

Happy Holidays!

Thought I'd update my battery issue. After I purchased the phone a few weeks ago the first thing I did was come here and read about the battery problems. So with that in mind I let my battery run fully down the first three charge attempts. I charged it as was specified including using the USB to trickle charge for several hours after.

Ok so Sat night I put my phone on the charger over night. Got up to go to work and when I pulled the phone off the charger it only showed 80%. WTF...after all night. I did a quick check by booting to the firmware test page which showed a 100% charge. Ok so the battery meter is still not reading correctly. I quickly plugged it back in and it rose to 90% by the time I left for work.

We're not allowed cell phones at work so I put the phone in my locker. GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth are all OFF. I leave for lunch about 6 hours later. Holy cow as I check my phone it's down to 30%. No usage whatseover. While I'm sitting at Pizza Hut playing with the phone it goes down to 15%. I verify the 15% with the firmware.

Monday morning(today) I get the same charge percentage after a full over night charge...80% but firmware does show a full charge of 100%.

One thing I did notice while sitting in Pizza Hut...looking at Spare Parts under the batter history it was showing like 99% usage with screen on. That made me wonder because the phone had been in my coat pocket in a locker for about 6 hours prior to that. No usage whatsover. So unless the screen was stuck "on" not sure what was happening.

i'm getting much better battery life too. what did I do? stopped monitoring my battery. i had battery graph and battery life apps. i shut them down along with uninstalled all the other weather apps i got to try to fix the weather channel one.

phone has been off charger since 7:30am. 70% left. its 3:30. all good in my book!

thats really minimal usage but i have moxier on 1 hour polls, weather channel widget (non gps) and maybe 20 texts and a 5 min phone call. but still way better than i was gettin!

yea find out why it thinks the screen is on and compare running/screen on time etc.

I took care of the whether channel whch demands GPS always by downloading and executing "Automatic task killer" . I then downlaoded "Beautiful widget" (paid version) to get a display of weather, time and date. It has an option, to use or not to use GPS. I chose no GPS beaming and the battery life is much improved.

This is my opinion about this battery problem and someone else please feel free to correct me.

1. I dont believe the battery is fully charging. I can take it off the charger and plug it back in and it will take another 30 minutes to fully charge.

2. Of course we all know the battery meter is completly off

3. I believe the phone has a bug in it which is causing the phone to think that the battery is almost dead causing it to turn off prematurely, When my battery says 5% left, I can turn the phone off and turn it into test mode by holding talk, center button, and end, and when i check the battery status this way it shows that there is till 40% battery but yet the battery will only last another hour or 2.

One of my big problems with this phone is the widgets & battery management. I love widgets. I think they are one of the best features of Android. Unfortunately, my battery only lasts 8-10 hours with moderate use (hour or so of browsing/app use, 5 phone calls, 10 texts). I attribute this to my widgets sapping phone power for updates - ie. RSS feeds, Facebook, weather, etc.

Using the phone to it's fullest leaves me with a battery that lasts for half a day. In the end, I feel like I need to strip my smart phone of its functionality to make it last. It's a real bummer. =(

..and of course I have GPS & Wifi turned off.

does anybody have any idea at all why some people are having no problems at all with inaccurate battery readings while lots of others are? It's clearly not a battery issue, its the phone issue.

furthermore, does anybody know if this issue is being worked on by android, sprint, samsung, anyone?

Just curious if any of those experiencing the issue have reported it to Sprint Level 2 and Samsung Level 2 support?

When I first encountered this issue (1 day after getting the new phone, charging it all night, and turning it on to find it as Completed Charging and then suddenly 70% a few moments after I removed the cord)...I went to the store I purchased the phone from. Sure enough they had a display model that was plugged into AC that showed it was completely charged. After removing the cable theirs dropped to 80% (not as far as mine apparently). They suggested I call Samsung since they duplicated the issue at the store and didn't want to waste my time with an exchange.

I called Samsung who had no reports of this issue and they escalated to their Level 2. They advised I call Sprint Support as they had no reports of this issue, but they (samsung) logged the incident for review.. Sprint Support quickly escalated to level 2 support, who again had no reports of this issue and suggest I exchange the device. So tomorrow I'm going to the store for an exchange.....

But it seems odd that neither Sprint nor Samsung were able to validate any reports of this problem...And in both cases I was escalated to level 2 support...Am I the only person who has called in to report this issue to level 2 support at either Sprint or Samsung? Perhaps reporting the issue will make it 'known' so they'll investigate the problem and resolve it. I will say, the google search took me 30 seconds to find this thread, so bit disappointed why Samsung and/or Sprint aren't participating in community involvement to identify issues.

The phone drops down the charge form 90% all of a sudden as it can't keep it very long. Also, the discharge from 30% to 15% is very rapid. The battery keep its charge at 70% for a long time and also at 15%.

no, you're not the only person whose contacted sprint about the battery issue. If you read through some of the earlier posts you will see others who have done the same thing. With about the same results you received.

I used a program from Google Market called "Power Manager" . The reading I am getting on, corresponds with Samsung battery indicator.

With nothing nunning in the background and only the phone on, the battery drops suddenly from 90%.

One thing I noted is that the discharges are in a decrement of 10% until it reaches 30%. Then it drops to 15% and stays there for quite some time. I never calculated the time at which it stays at 15% as the battery never got dischagred completely in my phone even though I let it there for a new hours.

One good thing I experienced is that the phone never shuts down in any given day even though it was at 15%. That is weird.

Understood I guess I should've emphasized the 'level 2' part of it. Having read all 14 pages (30 minutes of life I'm not getting back, LOL :) ) there were about 5 posts of people that were going to (or had) contacted support. No mention of Level 2, so if issues are not escalated, they can likely be discarded as user-error.

There was also a reference by someone who works at a retail store that escalated through their representative(s).

But so far, I seem to have been the only person to mention level 2 support at each company...perhaps additional users could do the same?
Just seems a bit odd that if all these users had called and had escalated incidents, that the issue would not be on an FAQ by now from either Sprint or Samsung.

Just an update. I received a phone call back stating this issue was just added to the Samsung Support known issue list yesterday. No eta on a fix but the person assured me that "Samsung cares about the end user experience and hopeful that this can be fixed in the future." No confirmations or ETAs were provided, but I was surprised to get the phone call.

That's good. The problem may be the battery. I charged the battery with "Battery Graph" and realized that even though the Samsung battery indicator indicated full charge, the Battery Graph only showed 90% charge. Then upon full charge relative to Battery Graph I disconneted the charger and got on the web. The discharge was a jump from 100% to 80% as if 90% doesn't even existed. Now it's operating on 70% of charge for sometime steady. I am going to re-charge it and leaving it on all night with no application running in the background.

My suggestion is to release a new replacement battery with a metal coating on it to prevent discharge from radiation affect from satellites:mad:. In olden days we have had batteries with cardboard wrapping that worked well. Now, almost all batteriers have metal casings if they don't go under metal shield. Many top model electronic equipments I have seen so far seems to have re-chargable batteries with a metal wrap.

So, this idea may solve the problem. Tell samsung.

Just a heads up guys.. I did a factory data reset in Setting > SD card / phone storage > Factory data reset

It helped with the battery problem a bit. It's not perfect though. I still get the same quality battery life, but it's more accurate at telling me how much percent is left than it was before. Again, not perfect, but a little better. Still want a patch to fix this.
