Hi, I am just wondering if I could update my Samsung Captivate (Rogers) which is currently running 2.1, to 2.2 or possibly 2.3.
If this is possible, how could I do it?

YOu need to go into the All Things Root section here on Android Forums and start reading. Then go over to the XDA Captivate Development forum and read some more. Once you understand the process then yes, you can upgrade to 2.2 via a custom ROM - or you can wait patiently (you may have grandchildren first, though) for AT&T to finally issue an official OTA update to Froyo, or 2.2. Gingerbread, or 2.3, is not ready for us mere mortals, the developers are still playing with it.Hi, I am just wondering if I could update my Samsung Captivate (Rogers) which is currently running 2.1, to 2.2 or possibly 2.3.

Is rooting worth the risk? I mean I am fine with my device right now... I am scared of bricking/ruining it.
You do know that rooting and uploading a custom ROM are not the same things, right? I would suggest doing a lot more reading before attempting either. I've had my phone since July and just rooted it this week. I followed the directions here:
http://androidforums.com/captivate-all-things-root/120616-captivate-root-3.html following the easy instructions in post #121, using the update.zip file in the first post. No computer needed.
Ok, I tried that, the post said to originally put the file in your sd card (I tried which failed because it said system aborted or whatever).
It turns out you need to save the file to your internal memory, but how the heck do I do that?

Ok this is absolutely driving me crazy now, ALL NIGHT I have been trying to root my phone! I can't get samsung driver to work on my computer so I don't know how to root on my computer if that won't work. Also trying to do it from my phone, I can't find "internal memory" to save the application or whatever to root the phone. Because all it does it let me save it on my SD card which I am not supposed to do because that will not work.
I want to root my phone so then I can get the firmware 2.2 to get a better battery life and faster phone.. and whatever else. But seriously this is driving me nuts I just want to isntall it already and I can't even get my computer to recognize the phone... and Iv'e been trying all frikin night long going insane.
I guess it's defected or something then. I just really wanted to root my phone... I guess I'll give up now![]()
I hear ya. I still have OCLF and Z4Root on my Captivate, but I guess they won't work under 2.2.I miss the days that you could root without connecting your phone to a PC. So much simpler.
