Root 2.2-2.3 update

Hi, I am just wondering if I could update my Samsung Captivate (Rogers) which is currently running 2.1, to 2.2 or possibly 2.3.

If this is possible, how could I do it? :o

YOu need to go into the All Things Root section here on Android Forums and start reading. Then go over to the XDA Captivate Development forum and read some more. Once you understand the process then yes, you can upgrade to 2.2 via a custom ROM - or you can wait patiently (you may have grandchildren first, though) for AT&T to finally issue an official OTA update to Froyo, or 2.2. Gingerbread, or 2.3, is not ready for us mere mortals, the developers are still playing with it.

Is rooting worth the risk? I mean I am fine with my device right now... I am scared of bricking/ruining it.

You are the only one who can decide if it is worth the risk. There are a lot of members on this site (myself included) who have flashed roms running 2.2. I think most, if not all, of us would say it was worth the risk.

There are also a number of people on this site who do not believe it is worth the risk and are vocal in their opinions.

The best thing you can do is educate yourself on what 2.2 roms bring to the table and then make an educated decision.
 
You know, it's a personal preference. You can just use the phone, but if you've got a little techno-geek side (like I do, and like most on this forum, I'll bet!) you'll end up rooting it, at least. You won't ruin it via rooting, you'll be able to use apps that can't be used on an unrooted phone (mainly maintenance type stuff, but there's some interesting stuff that takes root). I wanted sideloading, so I figured that one out, too. There are some apps over on XDA that you can use to both root and sideload, but first you need to make yourself familiar with the ADB tools.

You don't have to flash a ROM, I'm going to when I have some spare time to fiddle, I've been making preparations to do it this week. There's lots of help on these forums, just ask and I am sure you'll get a great answer!
 
thanks... I am gonna try to root my phone. So far when I plug my phone into the computer, I never see that my phone is plugged into the computer or anything(no software thingy for the phone on the computer) so I can't even try to unroot the phone. Whats wrong and how do I fix it?

Ok, I tried that, the post said to originally put the file in your sd card (I tried which failed because it said system aborted or whatever).
It turns out you need to save the file to your internal memory, but how the heck do I do that?

It will save to the correct place automatically if you download and use Opera (from the Market) to download it (part of the beauty of this method). Then you rename it from there to just update (no zip, it already knows that). You can find the file in My Files (look in applications). Long press on update.zip to get the "rename" option, then just type in "update" (no quotes), then continue with the instructions from there.

There is another risk not often mentioned, I hope I did not overlook someone else mentioning it. The risk is that you are then running with elevated permissions... And apps do too. It is therefore more likely a malicious app could conceivably take over your device more easily, if any such Android malwsre even exists.

Running with lesser permissions has always offered improved security. That us why Windows Vista hacked in UAC since they made the mistake years ago of allowing users to run with full administrative rights by default.
 
Ok this is absolutely driving me crazy now, ALL NIGHT I have been trying to root my phone! I can't get samsung driver to work on my computer so I don't know how to root on my computer if that won't work. Also trying to do it from my phone, I can't find "internal memory" to save the application or whatever to root the phone. Because all it does it let me save it on my SD card which I am not supposed to do because that will not work.

Oh, running with lesser permissions also protects the user from himself or herself.. Not just malicious apps. I really recommend you not if you are having any trouble. Ask yourself the real, tangible benefit YOU will have once rooted... Besides bragging rights :)
 
If you can't find 'Internal Memory' but DO see the External Memory then something is whack on your PC. Try another PC.

Say you through caution to the wind. I don't think you'll brick your device, but who knows what happens to your OS when the user and any app you install has rights to do so anything. Also, maybe reverting back to the original 2.1 firmware (JF6) will help. It seemed to make a difference for me.

CAUTION: Reversion of firmware will cause loss of data and apps.

Once you've reverted, the root process is simple though. If you can't figure it out, or get it working, then you should not root your device IMHO. The above may be what you are missing though. I tried after doing an OTA update and had failure, so... back to older firmware and then it works ;)

CAUTION: Rooting gives apps and the user elevated rights to do anything.. Pay extra close attention to the rights requested when you install an app from now on (assuming you get it rooted).
 
I edited my posts a bit, as I had typed them on the Tab. I threw in some more warnings too. I don't want you going and doing anything like losing apps and data because I said to do this or that. Look, I really recommend you not do this. It sounds 'cool', but be sure you have that reason.. that necessity.
 
I want to root my phone so then I can get the firmware 2.2 to get a better battery life and faster phone.. and whatever else. But seriously this is driving me nuts I just want to isntall it already and I can't even get my computer to recognize the phone... and Iv'e been trying all frikin night long going insane.

I actually found 2.2 to run slower than 2.1, but that may have just been me. Many of the modded firmwares come with 'cool' features that take up extra time. The boot process was definitely slower, by quite a bit. It had an even more elaborate animation. I did not see battery life improvements, but there may be some in some cases. You will be disappointed if those are your reasons, IMHO. Eventually the 2.2 update will come, and you'll know it is 'right'.. you won't have to take risks, and won't have data or app loss.

I added above, if you don't see 'Internal Memory' but do see external memory listed when you plug in the phone, then you've got an OS issue of some sort (most likely) and you should try a different PC.

No, it isn't that. Windows is just not mapping the 'Internal Memory' where it is supposed to be. Make sure you selected 'Mass storage mode'. It is a fixable problem. However, I think you'll be disappointed with the promises 2.2 offers. Keep waiting, I know it sucks to wait.. but I was disappointed with these custom 2.2 firmwares so will wait for an official one. I believe a semi-official one was posted here recently, and I have not tried it. It may be better.

My Tab runs 2.2 and it is a good OS, it isn't a giant leap forward though. I mean, 2.1-update1 to 2.2... You know, you aren't getting that many changes. The better cut&paste and cursor positioning is likely my only favorite new feature. In 2.3 there will be better support for these Tabs, but it seems the Tab already has some of the 2.3 features.

Let the manufacturers give you the proper firmware and you'll be much better off in the end. You could end up in a quagmire.
 
Try Settings, Applications, USB settings. In there, try media player or mass storage and your computer should see it.
 
I give up, all my computer lets me see is my media card and nothing else. Or it will end up saying my phones a blackberry if I go on mass media mode ( Have a memory card in the phone I used to have in my old blackberry.)
